For an absolute beginner, start with Godot’s recommended Learn GDScript From Zero course: it is free, open source, interactive, and available in a browser. Then work through Godot’s official step-by-step lessons to apply what you learn to nodes, scenes, scripts, input, and signals before tackling a first 2D game.
Start here if you are new to programming
Godot recommends GDScript for people who have not programmed before: “If you are new to programming, we recommend starting with GDScript because we designed it to be simpler than all-purpose languages like C#.” Its stable documentation identifies Learn GDScript From Zero as a complete beginner course with interactive practice in a browser. Godot’s education page describes the course as free and open source, and says it is available in browser and desktop forms.
The course teaches programming through Godot’s GDScript, rather than teaching a general-purpose language. Godot notes that the programming techniques can apply to other languages, but the immediate focus is learning the language used in the engine. That makes it a good first stop for someone who wants to write scripts in Godot and needs practice, not just a syntax reference.
Take the fundamentals into Godot
Knowing basic syntax is only part of making a game. Follow the official step-by-step lessons to learn how scripts fit into Godot projects. The sequence introduces nodes and scenes, instancing, scripting languages, writing a first script, listening for player input, and signals; it then prepares you for the first 2D game tutorial.

The linked sequence is labeled “latest” and explicitly warns that it is unstable. If you need instructions that match a particular Godot release, use the stable documentation and select the relevant version rather than assuming every latest-page detail applies to your installation.

Godot’s documentation also says that programming foundations and object-oriented concepts are helpful, and describes GDScript as a language made specifically for Godot and tightly integrated with the engine. If you already know another language, you can spend less time on introductory programming exercises and focus on the official engine lessons, keeping the stable docs nearby as a reference.

Optional book for a structured offline route
Learning GDScript by Developing a Game with Godot 4 is an optional supplement for readers who prefer a book-led, project-based sequence. Use the stable beginner learning path to choose what to study next, and consult the stable class and engine documentation as questions arise. Godot-specific GDScript knowledge becomes most useful when you repeatedly connect it to engine concepts: scripts run on nodes, scenes organize those nodes, input responds to player actions, and signals let parts of a project communicate.
