ext-ms-win-fveapi-query-l1-1-0.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows API-set contract connected with BitLocker and full-volume-encryption features, but it is usually not a standalone DLL you should download. When ext-ms-win-fveapi-query-l1-1-0.dll is reported as missing, repair Windows components first unless the error affects only one old application.
What this file actually does
The filename follows Microsoft’s documented API-set naming pattern. API sets are loader contracts: an application asks Windows for a capability through the contract name, and Windows routes that request to the implementation available on that system.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That means the name does not necessarily identify a physical file in C:WindowsSystem32. Windows may resolve the contract to another system binary rather than loading a file with the exact API-set name. Microsoft explains this indirection in its documentation on Windows API sets and API-set loader operation.
This particular contract belongs to the FVE, or full-volume-encryption, area of Windows. Historical Windows API-set records associate it with fveapi.dll, a Windows component used by BitLocker-related functionality. The important practical point is that replacing an alleged ext-ms-win-fveapi-query-l1-1-0.dll file will not repair the loader mapping or the Windows component store.

Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you observe | Most likely explanation | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Several unrelated programs fail | Windows component corruption or a failed update | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| BitLocker, Recovery, or Windows tools fail | Damaged Windows servicing components or fveapi.dll |
DISM and SFC |
| Only one old game or application fails | Application incompatibility or a damaged installation | Update, repair, or reinstall that program |
| A dependency scanner reports the name, but the app runs | Scanner does not understand the installed API-set schema | Test the application instead of copying files |
| The problem began after antivirus activity | A Windows component may have been quarantined | Review Protection History carefully |
| The message appeared after an update or restore | A rollback or incomplete update may have changed components | Recovery options or a repair reinstall |

Fix 1: Update Windows and restart
Pending updates can replace incomplete or mismatched Windows components.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Launch the affected program again.
If the error disappears, the problem was likely an incomplete or mismatched Windows component. If it remains, continue with component repair.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 2: Run DISM, then System File Checker
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its repair source. Run DISM first, followed by SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to stop temporarily.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application or Windows feature again.
Microsoft recommends this DISM-then-SFC sequence in its guide to using System File Checker.
A successful result may say that SFC found no integrity violations, or that it found and repaired corrupt files. Neither result proves that an old application is compatible with your Windows release, so test the original program after restarting.
If DISM says that source files could not be found, use a repair source matching the installed Windows edition and build. Do not point DISM at a random DLL. Microsoft’s documentation covers matching sources in Repair a Windows image.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM by hand can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problem and identify repair work, while the actual repair is performed by its full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate fix for damaged system components.
Fix 3: Repair the affected application
If only one game or program shows the error, do not assume the whole Windows installation is broken. The application may be old, incorrectly built, partially updated, or using a dependency report that does not understand API-set indirection.
First update the program from its original developer or store. For a game launcher, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity option.

- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If it still fails, return to the same page and select Reset, if available.
Reset can remove the application’s local settings or cached data. Back up saves and configuration files first if the program does not synchronize them.
For a traditional desktop application:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the application’s menu.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current build from the original vendor or official store.
Microsoft also documents general program repair paths in its guidance for fixing programs that cannot be installed or removed.
Reinstalling the affected program is the definitive fix when its own files or configuration are damaged. Do not copy an API-set name into the program folder.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a genuine Windows component, but the filename alone is not proof that a quarantined item is safe.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open the relevant entry and inspect its path, detection name, and source.
- Restore it only when you have confirmed that it is a genuine Microsoft-signed system file and the detection is a false positive.
- Run a full scan afterward.
Microsoft warns that restoring a real threat can expose the device again. If the item is suspicious, leave it quarantined and run Microsoft Defender Offline scan or a trusted full scan instead.
Fix 5: Use Windows repair reinstall
If DISM and SFC do not resolve failures in BitLocker, Recovery, or multiple applications, repair Windows itself.
Windows 11: reinstall through Windows Update
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
- Restart and test the failing feature.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Microsoft describes the process in Reinstall the current Windows version.
Use installation media when the option is unavailable
- Obtain official Windows installation media matching your edition and architecture.
- Mount the media while logged into Windows.
- Open it in File Explorer.
- Run
setup.exe. - Choose Change what to keep.
- Select Keep personal files and apps.
- Continue only after confirming that option is selected.
- Complete the installation and test the program.
Use Microsoft’s instructions for reinstalling Windows with installation media. Back up important files before any major repair.

Fix 6: Check updates, rollback, and recovery history
If the error started immediately after a Windows update, application installation, cleanup utility, or system recovery:
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
- Review recently installed updates.
- If the timing clearly matches, open Uninstall updates and remove the relevant recent update if Windows permits it.
- Restart and test again.
You can also open Settings > System > Recovery and review the available recovery options. System Restore can roll back system files and settings without normally removing personal files, but it may remove recently installed applications or drivers. Microsoft explains the choices in Windows recovery options.
32-bit, 64-bit, and dependency scanners
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows runs in a different loader context from a 64-bit application. A historical third-party file record, especially one describing a 32-bit Windows release, is not evidence that the same file belongs in a current System32 directory.
Dependency scanners can also produce confusing results. Some tools do not understand the API-set schema used by the installed Windows release and display an API-set contract as unresolved even though the application can run. Treat the actual launch behavior as more important than a single scanner result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf one application fails, update or reinstall that application first. If Windows tools, BitLocker, Recovery, and unrelated programs fail, prioritize DISM, SFC, and Windows repair.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not download or register this DLL
Do not download ext-ms-win-fveapi-query-l1-1-0.dll from a random DLL directory. Such a file may have the wrong Windows build, architecture, signature, or loader mapping, and replacing it can conceal the real component-store problem or introduce malicious code.
Do not copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or a game directory. The API-set name is a loader contract and may not be intended to exist as a physical file on your installation.
Do not run:
regsvr32 ext-ms-win-fveapi-query-l1-1-0.dll
regsvr32 is used for COM and ActiveX DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An API-set contract is not normally a component to register. Microsoft documents the command’s actual purpose in its regsvr32 reference.

Are drivers or Windows Features relevant?
Drivers are not the normal source of this API-set name. Update a driver only when the failing program is clearly tied to that hardware and its developer identifies a driver problem.
If you do need to check a driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers, or install a package from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
- Restart Windows.
Hunting through many hardware packages can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers, while driver installation is handled by its full version; it is optional and should not replace application repair when only one program fails.
Windows Features are also not a normal installer for this API-set contract. Do not enable random features in the hope that one will recreate it. Enable an optional Windows feature only when the affected application’s documentation specifically requires it.
FAQ
Is ext-ms-win-fveapi-query-l1-1-0.dll genuine?
Yes. It follows Microsoft’s documented API-set naming convention and relates to BitLocker or full-volume-encryption functionality. Genuine does not mean it must exist as a standalone file on disk.
Is it a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET file?
No verified evidence identifies it as one of those runtimes. Installing them is not the primary repair for this API-set contract.
Should I look for fveapi.dll?
fveapi.dll is a Windows implementation component historically associated with this API-set area. Do not download or replace it manually. Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or a repair reinstall.
Why does only one game report the error?
The game may be old, incorrectly packaged, partially damaged, or incompatible with the installed Windows API-set schema. Update, verify, repair, or reinstall that game before performing major Windows recovery.

That result means SFC did not find the type of corruption it can repair. The application can still be incompatible, or a dependency scanner can still be misleading. Continue with application repair and compatibility troubleshooting.
When should I suspect malware?
Suspect it when system files were modified or deleted outside normal Windows servicing, or when antivirus reports suspicious activity. Run Microsoft Defender Offline or a trusted full scan, and do not restore quarantined content solely because its name resembles a Windows DLL.
