If urlredir.dll is missing or was not found, repair the Office installation that owns it instead of copying a DLL into System32.
The file is associated with the Office Document Cache Handler and the historical URLRedirectionBHO browser-helper component. Older Office versions use it for document, SharePoint, and Office URL handling. Microsoft’s Office 2010 package documentation lists Urlredir.dll in both x86 and x64 packages, and file inventories also show it in Office 2013, Office 2016, and Click-to-Run installations. What the urlredir.dll error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because urlredir.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because urlredir.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting urlredir.dll.”
- “Error loading urlredir.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “urlredir.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are Windows loader messages. They do not prove that the DLL alone is damaged. The Office installation may be incomplete, the file may have been quarantined, a registry entry may point to an old Office folder, or another Office dependency may be broken.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe known file inventories include 64-bit entries such as version 16.0.4266.1001, approximately 0.55 MB, and version 14.0.7011.1000, approximately 0.66 MB. Do not treat either version as a universal replacement. The correct file depends on the Office edition, build, installation type, and architecture.

Fix 1: Repair Microsoft Office
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus a restart
This is the correct first repair because Office can restore the matching file, registration, and related components together.
Windows 11
- Close Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and every other Office application.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the relevant Office entry.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify.
- For Click-to-Run Office, select Online Repair, then choose Repair.
- Follow the prompts and restart Windows when finished.
Windows 10
- Close all Office applications.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Online Repair > Repair for Click-to-Run Office.
- For an MSI-based installation, choose Repair > Continue.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft describes these repair choices in its official Office repair procedure.
After restarting, open the application that produced the error. Repair worked if Office starts normally and the urlredir.dll message does not return. If the repair option is missing, several Office entries appear, or the repair fails, continue with the next steps rather than downloading the file.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged-looking Office file. Do not restore a file merely because its name is urlredir.dll.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections for an Office folder or
URLREDIR.DLL. - If an item is quarantined, inspect its original location and detection details.
- Restore it only if the original path belongs to your installed Office copy and the file has a valid Microsoft digital signature.
- If the path is unknown, suspicious, or outside the Office installation, leave it quarantined.
- Run Microsoft Defender Antivirus and then repair Office using Fix 1.
Microsoft warns that restoring a detected threat can reintroduce risk. Follow its Protection History guidance and prefer repairing Office over restoring an uncertain file.
To inspect an existing file, right-click it, choose Properties, open Digital Signatures, and verify that the signer is Microsoft. Location matters as much as the signature. urlredir.dll is not expected to be a standard C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 file.

Fix 3: Confirm the Office architecture and installation path
Time needed: 10 minutes
A 64-bit Windows installation can contain 32-bit Office. Match the Office architecture, not the operating system.
- Open Word or another Office application if possible.
- Select File > Account.
- Choose About Word, About Excel, or the equivalent application entry.
- Check whether it says 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Note whether Office is Microsoft 365 Click-to-Run, a perpetual Office release, or an older MSI installation.
Click-to-Run files may be stored under virtualized paths containing rootvfs, while older installations commonly use folders such as Office14, Office15, or Office16. The exact path varies by build and bitness.
If an error refers to an old Office14, Office15, or Office16 location after Office was removed, you may be dealing with a stale registry or browser-helper reference. Do not edit the registry to point it at a replacement DLL. Remove the obsolete Office installation properly, then repair or reinstall the Office version that should own the reference.
Also check Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates and install applicable Office or Windows updates. Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions explain the supported update process.
Fix 4: Reinstall Office if repair cannot restore the file
Time needed: 20–60 minutes
Use this when Online Repair fails, stops with an error, or the Office installation contains conflicting versions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Save documents and close all Office programs.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Remove the broken or duplicate Office installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account or organization portal that owns the Office license.
- Download and install the correct Office edition.
- Select the required 32-bit or 64-bit architecture when the installer provides that choice.
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
Use Microsoft’s Office reinstall instructions. For older unsupported Office releases, avoid obtaining installers from unofficial sources. Office 2010 is no longer supported, so moving to a supported Office release is safer than trying to maintain an incomplete legacy installation.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–40 minutes
urlredir.dll belongs to Office, so DISM and SFC are secondary checks. They are appropriate when other Windows files are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or multiple applications report system-component errors.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair Office again if the error remains.
Microsoft specifically recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker instructions.
Repeating these commands without checking what they changed rarely fixes an Office-owned DLL. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems, while its full version performs repairs; Microsoft Office repair remains the definitive fix when Office itself owns the missing file.
Fix 6: Use System Restore only after a recent system change
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
System Restore is reasonable if the error began immediately after an Office installation, update, cleanup utility, or system configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
You can also open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.
System Restore does not replace a proper Office reinstall, and it should not be used just because the filename looks unfamiliar.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when another error identifies a driver problem
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A driver reinstall is not a logical primary fix for urlredir.dll. Use Device Manager only if the same incident includes display, storage, network, or hardware errors.

- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- If the device remains faulty, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the driver from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which of many installed drivers is outdated, while its full version performs the driver installation; it does not replace repairing the Office installation that owns urlredir.dll.
Does regsvr32 fix urlredir.dll?
Usually, no. regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command, and most runtime DLLs do not need manual registration.
urlredir.dll is unusual because metadata shows historical DllRegisterServer and DllUnregisterServer exports. That makes registration technically possible for a matching installed copy, but it does not make a downloaded DLL safe or make registration the right first step.
Only consider registration after Office repair, when:

- its Microsoft signature is valid;
- its architecture matches Office;
- the exact application still reports a registration problem.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and use the full path to the verified installed copy:
regsvr32 "C:pathtoURLREDIR.DLL"
Use the path shown by your Office installation rather than copying this example literally. If registration fails, stop and repair or reinstall Office. Microsoft documents the command syntax in its regsvr32 reference.
Do not download urlredir.dll from a random site
A standalone DLL may be the wrong Office build, wrong architecture, unsigned, modified, or bundled with malware. It may also satisfy the loader only long enough to expose another missing dependency. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, an Office folder, or an application directory can create additional version and registration conflicts.

FAQ
Is urlredir.dll part of Windows?
No evidence supports treating it as a standard Windows System32 or SysWOW64 component. It is associated with Microsoft Office.
Which Office versions contain it?
File inventories show it in Office 2010, Office 2013, Office 2016, and Click-to-Run installations. Exact paths and builds vary by Office edition, architecture, and deployment method.
Should I run Windows Features?
Not as a fix for this file. Windows Features is for optional components such as .NET Framework and legacy Windows features. Open Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off only when a separate error specifically identifies a missing Windows feature. Enabling random features will not restore an Office DLL.
Why does the message say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
The loader may be unable to find a dependency, may be reading an obsolete path, or may be loading a file with the wrong architecture. Repair Office so its related files and registrations are restored together.
What if Office repair and reinstall both fail?
Record the executable producing the message, the full path named in the error, Office edition, 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, Event Viewer details, and whether a signed copy exists. Then investigate the specific dependency chain rather than using a generic DLL fixer.
