ExtremeTech Explains: What Is DirectX 12?

DirectX 12 gives game engines more explicit control over GPU work, but it is not a guaranteed FPS boost. Here’s what DX12, DX12 Ultimate, and PC compatibility mean.

DirectX 12 is Microsoft’s graphics and compute API platform for Windows, and Direct3D 12 is the 3D graphics API most people mean when they say “DX12.” It gives game engines more explicit control over sending work to a GPU than Direct3D 11 does. That can reduce CPU overhead or enable newer graphics features, but it does not automatically make every game faster: results depend on the game’s renderer, hardware, drivers, and workload.

DirectX and Direct3D are not the same thing

DirectX is a family of Microsoft programming interfaces for multimedia functions on Windows and Xbox-related platforms. Its components cover areas such as graphics, audio, and input. Direct3D 12 is the family’s modern 3D graphics API; it is the part game engines use to prepare and submit graphics work to a GPU.

Term What it means
DirectX The umbrella family of Microsoft multimedia APIs.
Direct3D 12 (D3D12 or DX12) The 3D graphics API used by games and other demanding graphics applications.
DXGI Graphics infrastructure for tasks such as identifying adapters, managing swap chains, and presenting images.
HLSL Microsoft’s High-Level Shader Language, used to write GPU shaders.
DirectX Raytracing (DXR) Ray-tracing functionality integrated into the Direct3D 12 ecosystem.
DirectStorage A related API intended to reduce CPU overhead when streaming data from fast storage; it is not another name for Direct3D 12.

Direct3D 12 is an API contract, not a separate graphics program that renders a game by itself. A game engine makes API calls; Windows and the graphics driver remain part of the process of getting work to the GPU.

Why Microsoft made Direct3D 12 more explicit

A game’s CPU has to prepare work for the GPU. In a CPU-bound scene, the GPU may be capable of drawing more, but it must wait while the game prepares and submits commands. Older, higher-level graphics APIs handle more validation and bookkeeping for the application. That makes them easier to use, but can add overhead and constrain how work is organized across CPU cores.

Direct3D 12 was designed to reduce that overhead and improve multi-core CPU scaling. It lets an engine record and submit work more explicitly, including preparing command lists on multiple CPU threads. Microsoft describes the lower-level model and its CPU-efficiency goals in its Direct3D 12 programming guide and CPU-efficiency specification.

“Lower level” does not mean the game bypasses Windows or communicates with the GPU’s electrical signals. It means the engine takes responsibility for more of the decisions about commands, resources, and synchronization instead of relying on the API and driver to make as many of them implicitly.

How Direct3D 12 differs from Direct3D 11

Area Direct3D 11 Direct3D 12
Programming model Higher-level; the runtime and driver handle more bookkeeping. Lower-level and more explicit; the engine manages more details.
CPU work Can have more runtime and driver overhead. Designed to reduce CPU overhead and scale command generation across cores.
Resource and state management More is handled implicitly. More explicit responsibility rests with the engine.
Implementation effort Generally simpler to implement and maintain. More complex; engines must handle synchronization, resource states, and related details correctly.
Potential performance Can be fast and well optimized, especially in established games. Can have a higher performance ceiling in suitable workloads, but the result depends on implementation.
Player experience Often a mature compatibility option. May be faster, similar, or slower in a particular game.

Microsoft identifies lower hardware abstraction and improved multi-core CPU scaling as defining characteristics of Direct3D 12. Those design goals are not a guarantee that every DX12 renderer will outperform that game’s DX11 renderer.

What DX12 can—and cannot—do for a game

DX12 is most likely to help when CPU overhead is limiting performance, such as in a scene with many objects or draw calls that the engine needs to prepare. Better use of multiple CPU cores can let an engine feed the GPU more effectively. Direct3D 12 can also expose capabilities used for newer rendering techniques.

If the GPU is already the bottleneck, reducing CPU-side overhead may make little difference to frame rate. A game can also have a less mature DX12 renderer than its DX11 path. Shader compilation, asset streaming, synchronization, or driver behavior may cause stutter; the API name alone does not identify the cause.

  • DX12 is more promising when a game is CPU-bound, its engine is designed around the API, and the system’s CPU, GPU, and drivers are compatible.
  • DX12 may not help when the GPU is already fully occupied, the title’s DX12 implementation is poorly optimized, or its DX11 path is more mature.
  • A feature may require DX12 without producing a large average-frame-rate increase. Compatibility and performance are separate questions.

When a game offers DX11 and DX12 modes, choose based on that game’s behavior on your PC. If DX12 is slower or unstable, using DX11 is a reasonable fallback when the game provides it.

What the engine has to manage

The performance potential comes with more work for developers. A DX12 engine must organize GPU work and track its progress rather than relying on the API to hide as much of that complexity. Common building blocks include:

  • Command lists and command allocators: Record GPU commands and provide the storage used to build them.
  • Command queues: Submit graphics, compute, or copy work for execution.
  • Fences: Track progress and synchronize CPU and GPU work.
  • Descriptor heaps and tables: Organize information that tells shaders how to access resources.
  • Resource barriers: Coordinate changes in how a GPU resource is used.
  • Pipeline state objects and root signatures: Define rendering configuration and how shaders access resources.
  • Memory and resource lifetime management: Ensure resources are available when needed and not reused or released too soon.

Engines can also record commands across CPU threads and schedule asynchronous compute, which may overlap compute work with graphics work when the hardware and engine make that worthwhile. These are tools, not automatic speed boosts: poor scheduling or synchronization can waste the benefit. A DX11 game does not gain DX12’s intended advantages simply by being recompiled; its renderer must be designed to use the model.

What DirectX 12 Ultimate means

DirectX 12 Ultimate is a capability designation within the Direct3D 12 ecosystem, not a separate successor such as “DX13.” Microsoft’s defined Ultimate feature set groups four capabilities: DirectX Raytracing, Variable Rate Shading, Mesh Shaders, and Sampler Feedback.

  • DirectX Raytracing: Provides API and hardware support for ray-traced effects, including techniques for reflections, shadows, and global illumination.
  • Variable Rate Shading: Lets a game shade different parts of an image at different rates.
  • Mesh Shaders: Offer a programmable approach to geometry processing that can replace parts of older graphics-pipeline methods.
  • Sampler Feedback: Helps an engine determine which texture details are being used, potentially improving texture streaming and memory efficiency.

A PC that supports the base Direct3D 12 API does not necessarily support all four Ultimate features. A compatible GPU, driver, and game implementation are all needed, and the game’s settings must enable a feature for it to be used. Microsoft’s DX12 Ultimate developer guide explains the feature group.

Why “supports DX12” is not a complete compatibility answer

Direct3D 12 support is not a single yes-or-no test for every game. A system may be able to create a D3D12 device while lacking a particular feature a game requires. Hardware feature levels describe baseline capability, while optional feature checks and Shader Model support determine whether specific functionality is available. Driver support matters too.

  • API support: Whether the graphics stack can use Direct3D 12.
  • Feature level: The baseline set of capabilities exposed by the GPU.
  • Optional features: Additional capabilities, such as ray tracing, that are not guaranteed by API support alone.
  • Shader Model: The shader capabilities and targets available to the game.
  • DX12 Ultimate: Support for the defined set of advanced features, beyond basic D3D12 compatibility.
  • Driver and runtime: The software path must support the hardware and the game’s requirements.

Direct3D 12 arrived with Windows 10 and is available on supported Windows systems through the graphics stack. Windows 11’s published minimum hardware requirements call for DirectX 12-or-later graphics support and WDDM 2.0 or later; that baseline does not mean every Windows 11 PC supports every DX12 feature. The Windows 11 minimum hardware requirements set the operating-system baseline, not a guarantee for a particular game.

Microsoft’s DirectX 12 Agility SDK gives developers a way to distribute newer D3D12 features through a separately updated runtime path on supported Windows 10 and later installations. It does not remove hardware or driver requirements. See Microsoft’s DirectX landing page for its Agility SDK overview.

How to check your PC’s DirectX support

  1. Press Windows key + R, type dxdiag, and press Enter.
  2. Open the Display or Render tab for the GPU you want to check.
  3. Note the GPU model, driver version and model, DirectX version, and listed feature levels. Check any Shader Model or other game-specific requirement separately if it is not shown there.
  4. Compare those details with the game’s exact system requirements, including any required feature level, Shader Model, or ray-tracing capability.

On a system with integrated and discrete graphics, check which adapter the game actually uses. Microsoft’s support guidance explains how to identify installed graphics adapters and why a suitable driver is required: DirectX 12 support guidance.

dxdiag is a useful first check, not a certificate that every DX12 game or optional feature will work. A game can require more than the generic DirectX version shown there.

  1. Update the graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or the PC manufacturer, as appropriate.
  2. Install pending Windows updates, then restart and try the game again.
  3. Confirm the game is using the intended GPU, especially on a laptop or a PC with both integrated and discrete graphics.
  4. Check the exact requirement in the game’s documentation: it may specify a feature level, Shader Model, ray tracing, or another capability beyond basic DX12.
  5. Try another renderer, such as DX11 or Vulkan, if the game offers one.
  6. Consider software faults such as a damaged game installation or incompatible mod if the hardware appears to meet the requirements.

A driver update can fix a software compatibility problem, but it cannot add a physical GPU feature that the hardware lacks.

DX12, DX11, Vulkan, and game engines

Direct3D 11 can be easier to implement and may be the more stable option for an older or established game. Vulkan is a cross-platform API with similarly explicit programming ambitions, but it is not a drop-in replacement: the engine needs a Vulkan renderer and platform support. OpenGL remains relevant in some applications and platforms, although it is not the same programming model as DX12.

Game engines such as Unreal and Unity can hide much of the API-specific work from many developers. A game built with an engine may still use D3D12 underneath, but the engine’s implementation and the game’s configuration determine whether that path is available and how well it performs. No API is universally best; the choice depends on platform targets, engine design, tools, driver coverage, and the features a game needs.
