Research is a separate investment in next season’s car, unlocked after next-season regulation changes have been voted on. The right choice depends on whether your priority is improving this year’s results or preparing for the next car.
How car part development works
The in-game loop has three stages: design a part, manufacture copies of the completed design, and research for next season when that option becomes available. Design creates the upgrade plan; it does not automatically put a usable part on either car.

How to design a part
1. Pick the part that addresses your car’s needs
Compare the car’s relative performance and consider your season objective before committing. The in-game upgrade screen estimates performance relative to rivals and across corners and straights, and the official preview describes both circuit-specific upgrades and packages planned for upcoming races. WePC suggests considering the chassis or underfloor early, and notes that a new suspension is already in development in the first season. Those are guide-specific recommendations, not a universal best build order.

2. Allocate CFD and wind-tunnel hours
F1.com’s April 19, 2022 preview says, “After you choose which part needs to be upgraded, you can allocate CFD and wind tunnel hours to develop it.” The available evidence does not establish a fixed best allocation. WePC says each team’s testing-hour allowance depends on its prior grid position, with lower-placed teams receiving more hours; use the in-game “Show Rank on Grid” view when checking projected results.
3. Choose design focus, staffing, and approach
Design focus lets you emphasize selected performance areas. According to WePC, stronger adjustments can lengthen development, so compare the projected improvement with when the part will be ready. Assigning more engineers shortens project time, according to the same guide.

- Rushed: faster development, higher cost, and less expertise gained.
- Intense: higher cost and more expertise gained without increasing project length.
These are the guide’s descriptions of the mechanics, not a guarantee that one option is best in every save or patch. Choose based on whether time, budget, or expertise matters most for the project.
Manufacture copies before fitting the upgrade
Once design is complete, manufacture the part. Only manufactured copies can be fitted to the cars. WePC recommends keeping at least two spare copies in addition to the two copies fitted to the cars, but that is its suggested buffer rather than a mandatory requirement.

Manufacturing also offers urgency trade-offs: WePC says Rushed production cuts production time while increasing cost, while Emergency production can produce a part in one day at significantly higher cost. Use those options when the race schedule makes waiting more costly than spending the extra budget.
When should you research instead of design?
WePC says research unlocks after next-season regulation changes have been voted on. At that point, you are choosing between development that can help the current car and research aimed at the next season. There is no established single dominant strategy: weigh team position, the remaining schedule, available resources, and whether your goal is to maximize this season or strengthen the next car.

WePC advises lower-end teams to consider putting more emphasis on research. Treat that as strategic guidance rather than a rule: the value of an immediate upgrade depends on how much of the season remains and whether it can affect your results before the next car becomes the priority.
