Far Cry 5 supports online co-op for two players. Once the host leaves Dutch’s Island, they can invite a friend from the pause menu. The host keeps story and world progress; the guest retains certain personal progress but does not advance their own campaign’s story. Co-op is not cross-platform, according to Ubisoft’s FAQ.
What Far Cry 5 co-op includes
Co-op is an online, two-player experience. Ubisoft describes a “Friend for Hire” who can join the host across missions, and Steam’s listing says the full campaign can be played in two-player co-op. The guest joins the host’s world rather than creating a shared campaign that advances equally for both players.

Both players need internet access and must be friends on their platform’s friends list. Ubisoft Help says console players need an active PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass subscription; check your platform’s current online-play requirements, since subscription names and rules can change. Ubisoft’s 2017 announcement also says there is no random matchmaking: co-op is restricted to friends.
How to invite a friend
The host must first leave Dutch’s Island. Then invite the other player from the game’s pause menu.

- In the host’s game, leave Dutch’s Island to unlock co-op.
- Open the pause menu and select Online.
- Choose Invite friends, then select the friend to invite.
The invitation is sent through the platform’s friends system. Ubisoft’s support instructions describe a console subscription requirement; confirm the current requirement for your specific platform before troubleshooting an invitation.
What progress carries over for the guest?
Think of progress in two categories: the host’s story and world, and the guest’s personal character progress. Ubisoft says story progress is saved only for the host. The guest can return to their own single-player campaign where they left off, but completing a mission in the host’s world does not advance that mission in the guest’s campaign. Ubisoft’s earlier explanation similarly says only the host accepts missions, recruits and commands Guns for Hire, and keeps world progress.

These distinctions matter if both players want to advance the same campaign: each player must host their own session for their own world and story progress. The retained personal progress does not mean the guest’s campaign missions are completed.

The guest fights alongside the host and can share ammunition and health packs. Ubisoft says friendly fire is off by default and can be enabled. The game also tracks how far apart the players are; if they separate too much, it may move the guest toward the host. The guest can join or leave the host’s session.

Can players on different platforms play together?
Ubisoft’s co-op FAQ says Far Cry 5 co-op is not cross-platform. The FAQ names PS4, Xbox One, and PC, so treat that as the FAQ’s platform guidance rather than a complete current compatibility chart for every platform or edition. Check the relevant platform listings if you need to confirm a specific pairing. Cross-platform play and cross-save are different questions: the cited guidance does not establish cross-save support.
