The 2026 date was a real update—but it is no longer Fable’s current schedule. In February 2025, Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan announced that the planned 2025 release had moved to 2026, alongside footage labelled pre-alpha gameplay. Xbox now lists Fable for February 23, 2027. IGN’s February 25, 2025 video listing records the earlier update; the current Xbox product page gives the later date.
How Fable’s release date changed
| Stage | What was announced |
|---|---|
| Original plan | A 2025 release, as described in the February 2025 delay report. |
| February 2025 update | The release moved to 2026. IGN’s listing attributes the announcement to Craig Duncan, then Head of Xbox Game Studios, and labels the accompanying footage “Pre-Alpha Gameplay.” IGN video listing, February 25, 2025. |

Microsoft’s Fable announcement page, dated January 22, 2026, also says the game is coming in February 2027. Its displayed text—not the older wording in that page’s URL—is consistent with the Xbox listing. Official Fable announcement.
What the later gameplay presentation showed
At gamescom 2026, Xbox presented 18 minutes of quest gameplay set in Bowerstone. Xbox Wire’s account introduces Humphry, described as the disgraced leader of the Heroes’ Guild, and highlights combat and moments involving choice and consequence. The presentation also says players can enter every building and buy every house. These are details reported by Xbox about its presentation, not independent hands-on findings. What kind of game is Fable?
Xbox describes Playground Games’ Fable as an open-world action RPG set in Albion and published by Xbox Game Studios. Its official description centers on a customizable hero, melee, ranged, and magical combat, and a reputation and choice system that can affect relationships with villagers and shape the world. Xbox names familiar enemies including Hobbes, Balverines, and Trolls, alongside new enemies. These are publisher descriptions, not independent assessments of the finished game. Xbox’s Fable overview.
