The launch announcement covered 17 games in 30 countries. Those figures and compatibility details describe the 2016 release, not Messenger’s availability today.
What were Facebook Instant Games?
Instant Games were small games integrated into Facebook’s services rather than separate downloads. Facebook’s launch announcement said they used HTML5 and could be played from Messenger or News Feed without downloading or installing a new app. The announcement was made on November 29, 2016, U.S. time; Meta’s Japanese newsroom post documenting it is dated November 30, 2016. How did people play them?
From a Messenger conversation
- Open a conversation or group chat in Messenger.
- Tap the game-controller icon, choose a game from the list, and start playing.
- Share scores in the conversation; leaderboards let friends compare results.
From Facebook News Feed
A News Feed post could include a Play button, providing another route into a game. Both entry points were part of the launch-era feature described by Meta.

What were the launch-era requirements and availability?
Facebook said Instant Games were available in 30 countries, including Japan, and specified Facebook desktop, iOS 8.0, and Android 5.0 support. These are details from the November 2016 announcement; they should not be read as current device requirements or a current country list.
How did the feature expand in 2017?
In May 2017, Meta said it was beginning a broader Messenger rollout. Its announcement cited a Messenger monthly audience of 1.2 billion at that time and said up to 50 game titles could be available depending on location and device, with worldwide iOS and Android rollout planned over the following weeks. It also described turn-based games, tournaments, leaderboards, more customizable game messages, and Game bots that could surface games and leaderboard updates. These are claims and plans from 2017, not current audience or availability figures. Meta’s May 2017 announcement

In December 2017, Meta discussed live streaming gameplay and plans to test games during video chat. It also announced or previewed titles including Angry Birds, Sonic Jump, Disney Tsum Tsum, and a GungHo puzzle game. That announcement establishes what Meta presented or planned at the time; it does not by itself establish that every title later launched or remains available. Meta’s December 2017 post
Were Messenger Instant Games free?
Contemporaneous launch coverage reported that games were free and in-game purchases were not allowed at that point. Facebook vice president of Messaging David Marcus told WIRED, “All the games are free, and we expect them to stay free, but we will explore monetisation opportunities.” The statement describes the launch period, not a current policy. WIRED’s November 2016 coverage reported that Facebook might explore advertising or a share of payments as monetization possibilities; those were possibilities, not a description of established launch purchases.
