Factorio multiplayer lag is not always an internet problem. The symptom may come from low UPS (slow simulation), low FPS (local rendering), network latency or packet loss, an underpowered client, mods, or a desynchronization. Press F4 first and enable the FPS, time-usage, and multiplayer-statistics displays. Those numbers tell you whether to troubleshoot the factory, a PC, or the connection.
Factorio uses deterministic multiplayer simulation: each game instance simulates the world while player inputs are synchronized. Latency hiding can make movement appear smooth even when server-confirmed actions such as combat, driving, crafting, and inventory transfers feel delayed. See the official Factorio multiplayer documentation for the networking model.

Diagnose the type of lag first
| What you see | Likely cause | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone moves or crafts slowly | Low UPS or a server simulation bottleneck | FPS, UPS, and time usage |
| Only one player rubber-bands or has delayed actions | Latency, packet loss, or that player’s PC | Multiplayer statistics on both ends |
| FPS is low but UPS is normal | Local graphics or GPU performance | GPU time and graphics settings |
| FPS and UPS both fall during factory activity | Simulation load, rendering load, or both | Time-usage entries and GPU time |
| Inventory, shooting, or driving feels delayed | Network delay or multiplayer waiting | Multiplayer statistics |
| Everyone freezes periodically | Server spikes, scripts, saving, or network problems | Time-usage spikes and mod isolation |
| A desync message appears | Simulation mismatch, not ordinary lag | Preserve the desync report |
Factorio normally targets 60 updates per second, but 60 UPS is not guaranteed on every factory, mod set, or PC. The important question is which counter falls and when.

Fix low UPS and slow-motion multiplayer
Find out whether the host is responsible
Ask whether everyone slows down simultaneously, whether another player can host the same save more smoothly, and whether the issue happens only on a large or heavily modded world. Save the game, have another capable player host it, and compare UPS and multiplayer statistics.
Also start a new vanilla map briefly. If the vanilla map is smooth but the existing save is slow, the likely cause is factory scale, enemy activity, trains, bots, fluids, scripts, or mods—not your internet speed.
Recommended Free Tools
Factorio’s multiplayer model means the host is not automatically the only performance bottleneck. Every participant simulates the world, so one slow client can also affect multiplayer behavior. Check the affected player’s UPS as well as the host’s.
Reduce simulation load based on evidence
Use show-time-usage to identify expensive systems before changing the factory. Depending on the save, investigate:
- script-heavy mods and scenarios;
- very large bot networks;
- extensive train and fluid systems;
- high-entity production areas;
- excessive biter activity;
- periodic autosave or script spikes.
Do not remove trains, bots, or biters blindly. Redesign or remove the subsystem only after the debug display indicates that it is contributing to the slowdown.
Improve the host or client PC
- Close background applications and pause cloud synchronization, scans, compiling, and rendering workloads.
- On a laptop, test while plugged in and check for thermal throttling.
- Use a high-performance power profile if the system is limiting CPU performance.
- Check that the game is not competing for an overloaded or nearly full drive.
- Upgrade CPU or RAM only after confirming that hardware is the limiting factor.
A moderate total CPU percentage does not prove that Factorio has spare performance. A particular simulation workload, memory behavior, or single-thread limit can be the bottleneck.

Fix latency, rubber-banding, and delayed actions
Higher download speed is not usually the answer. Stable latency, low jitter, and low packet loss matter more for responsive multiplayer.
- Stop downloads, streaming uploads, cloud synchronization, and other heavy traffic.
- Use wired Ethernet for the host and affected player when possible.
- If using Wi-Fi, test near the router and use a clean 5 GHz or 6 GHz connection where practical.
- Restart the modem and router.
- Test at another time to identify congestion or bufferbloat.
- Temporarily bypass a VPN, virtual-LAN tool, or other tunnel.
- Compare Steam joining, LAN, direct connection, or a dedicated server.
One player can experience poor responsiveness while everyone else is fine because that player’s route to the host is bad. Conversely, a distant dedicated server or an unsuitable relay route can worsen latency. Steam’s networking documentation notes that relay routes can sometimes be slower than direct routes depending on location.
Choose the right connection method
Steam hosting
Steam is usually the simplest choice for a small group. It avoids most port-forwarding work and is described by Factorio’s documentation as the recommended option for an average group. Its drawback is that the host still runs the game and simulation, and the resulting route may not be optimal for every player.
LAN
Use LAN multiplayer when everyone is on the same local network. It avoids sending local traffic through an unnecessary external route and is often the best option for players in the same home or venue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDirect connection and port forwarding
Direct hosting can provide a better route for a technically confident host, but it requires a reachable server and correct UDP forwarding. Carrier-grade NAT, double NAT, strict firewalls, changing public IP addresses, or an incorrect internal IP can prevent it from working.
Dedicated headless server
A dedicated server is useful for a long-running world, regular groups, or a host who should not keep the game client open. Factorio provides a free Linux headless-server package. On Windows, the normal game package can run headlessly; the official FAQ recommends Factorio.exe --help for available command-line options.

A dedicated server does not automatically cure low UPS, a bad network route, a slow client, or a script-heavy mod. It separates the host’s graphics workload from server operation and lets you move the simulation to better or more suitably located hardware.
Check ports, firewalls, and NAT
Factorio uses UDP, and 34197 is the documented default server port, although it can be changed. If direct hosting fails:
- confirm that the router forwards UDP, not only TCP;
- verify the forwarding rule points to the host’s current internal IP;
- allow Factorio through Windows Firewall and security software;
- check for a modem-plus-router double-NAT setup;
- ask whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT;
- check whether the router or ISP changes or blocks the source port.
If port forwarding is not practical, use Steam hosting, LAN play, or a dedicated host. A VPN or virtual-LAN tool should be a last resort because it can add latency and complicate diagnosis.
Match Factorio versions and mods
All players and the server need the same Factorio version, compatible mod versions, and the same mod set. Expansion-enabled saves also require the appropriate expansion availability.
- Back up the save and record the mod list.
- Move every player and the server to the same stable branch and version.
- Temporarily disable all mods.
- Test a new vanilla map and, where appropriate, a copy of the affected save.
- Re-enable mods in groups or by suspected performance impact.
- Check mod descriptions and changelogs for multiplayer or performance issues.
Branches change over time. In the research snapshot, the official download page listed stable 2.0.77 and experimental 2.1.12; those numbers are dated information, not a permanent recommendation. Check the current official download page before changing branches.

- reducing sprite, lighting, shadow, animation, and other graphics-heavy settings;
- testing fullscreen and windowed modes;
- checking VSync behavior;

- updating or rolling back the GPU driver if the issue began immediately after a driver change;
- comparing the affected PC in single-player and multiplayer.
Graphics settings cannot repair high ping, packet loss, or a server whose UPS is low.
When it is a desync—not lag
A desynchronization means that a client and the server disagree about the simulated game state. It is not the same as high latency, packet loss, low FPS, or low UPS. The official desynchronization documentation separates these problems.
If Factorio reports a desync, preserve the desync report and reproduce the issue without mods if possible. Check the game version, mod set, scenario, and recent changes. Do not treat port forwarding, lower graphics settings, or buying hosting as generic desync fixes; investigate the responsible mod, scenario, game issue, or hardware calculation problem instead.

Consider dedicated hosting only after the diagnosis shows that the current host machine, host availability, or location is the problem. It can help when the group needs a world that stays online, the host’s PC is weak or busy, or a better-located machine can provide a more stable route.
It is poor value when the save has low UPS, one client cannot keep up, the selected server is geographically distant, or the problem is a broken mod. Before paying, check CPU performance, RAM, backups, save access, mod management, automatic updates, cancellation terms, and the server’s location relative to most players. A general VPS may require substantially more setup than managed game hosting. No specific hosting provider or current price is recommended here.
