Fallout 4 Next Gen Update 2, released May 13, 2024, added frame-rate and graphics-priority options for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, alongside platform-specific fixes. You can choose a 30, 40, or 60 FPS target and prioritize Visuals or Performance, but you must change these options from the main menu. A 120 Hz-capable display is required for the 40 FPS target.
What did Fallout 4 Next Gen Update 2 change?
Bethesda’s May 13, 2024 patch added display settings on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The options let players select a frame-rate target and choose whether to prioritize Visuals or Performance. Bethesda recommends leaving the defaults in place; if targeting 60 FPS, it recommends Performance mode. The patch notes do not establish one best setting for every screen or player.

How do Fallout 4’s new graphics and frame-rate options work?
Choose a frame-rate target
On PS5 or Xbox Series S|X, the selectable targets are 30, 40, and 60 FPS; 60 is the default. The 40 FPS target requires a display that supports 120 Hz. Bethesda does not describe 40 FPS as an option for ordinary 60 Hz displays.
Choose Visuals or Performance
The Visuals and Performance choices set which aspect the game prioritizes while trying to maintain the selected frame-rate target. Bethesda says either mode may dynamically adjust internal resolution in demanding scenes or action. The notes therefore do not promise a fixed resolution or an unchanging frame rate for every situation.

How do you change Fallout 4’s settings?
- Return to the game’s main menu; these settings cannot be changed while playing.
- Open the display options and choose a 30, 40, or 60 FPS target.
- Choose Visuals or Performance prioritization, then start or resume the game.
The 40 FPS target is only suitable if your display supports 120 Hz. Bethesda’s notes do not give a separate universal preset for particular television or monitor models.

These are the fixes Bethesda attributed to Update 2; they should not be read as a description of every bug or mod-support issue in the game today.

How is Update 2 different from the April 25, 2024 update?
Update 2 followed the original next-generation update, released April 25, 2024. That earlier patch added native PS5 and Xbox Series applications, Performance and Quality modes, PC widescreen and ultrawide support, an Epic Games Store release, Steam Deck verification, free Creation Club items, and other fixes. Its Performance and Quality descriptions belong to the April update, not Update 2. See Bethesda’s April 25 patch notes for those details.
Update 2 is also not the latest Fallout 4 patch. Bethesda Support’s Fallout 4 patch history lists later updates, including entries through August 18, 2026. For current behavior or later fixes, consult that history rather than treating the May 2024 notes as current.

Is Fallout 4 Next Gen Update 2 free?
Bethesda described the next-generation update as free. Its announcement says console players need to own Fallout 4 for the relevant device to download the update. The announcement also describes free updates for PS4 and Xbox One players and a PC update, but it does not establish current store entitlements for every edition or region.
