On PC, Fallout 4 cheats are entered through the in-game console. Press ~, type a command, and press Enter; the key can differ with your keyboard layout or game binding. This practical reference covers commonly used commands for movement, inventory, NPCs, factions, and quests—not a verified list of every engine or debug command. Before experimenting, make a separate manual save: Bethesda warns that console commands are unsupported and can break quests, fast travel, or AI.
How to open and use Fallout 4’s console
- Make a separate manual save. This is practical precaution, not a guarantee that every command can be undone.
- Open the console. Press
~(tilde) during play. If it does not open, the key may depend on your keyboard layout and the game’s binding. Guides suggest other keys on some layouts, but no single alternative is universal; check your assigned controls. - Enter a command and press Enter. Type the command as shown, replacing bracketed descriptions with actual values. Do not type the brackets.
- Close the console. Use the console key again or the applicable control for your setup.
Commands can take arguments separated by spaces: for example, an item ID and amount, or a quest ID. Some commands act on the currently selected target. With the console open, click the actor or object you intend to affect; take care that the intended target is selected before entering a destructive command.

Find item, NPC, and quest IDs
Use help [name] [filter] to search by name. For a multiword name, put it in quotation marks, such as help "bobby pin" 0. The filter controls the kind of results returned; the guides describe values from 0 to 4. Results can be numerous, so check that the entry matches the object or command you need.
Clicking an NPC or item with the console open can display its ID. Keep the distinction between a base item ID, which identifies a kind of item, and a reference ID, which identifies a particular placed actor or object. Commands that take an item ID generally also need an amount. Do not substitute a reference ID for an item ID without confirming what the command expects.

Movement, camera, and world controls
| Command | Effect and use |
|---|---|
tgm |
Toggle god mode. |
tcl |
Toggle collision (noclip). |
tfc |
Enable free camera. |
tfc 1 |
Enable free camera and freeze animations, as described by PC Gamer. |
tm |
Toggle menus and the user interface. If this hides the console as well, enter tm again without seeing it to restore the interface. |
csb |
Clear blood and explosion screen effects. |
fov [first-person FOV] [third-person FOV] |
Set field of view values. PC Gamer says a value of 0 resets that view’s value to default. |
coc [cell ID] |
Teleport to a named cell or location. Use the cell ID, not an item name. |
set timescale to [number] |
Change the rate of game time. References disagree on the default, so this guide does not specify a default value. |
Player stats, health, and inventory
| Command | Effect and example |
|---|---|
player.resethealth |
Restore the player character’s health. |
player.setlevel [number] |
Set the player character’s level. |
player.modav [attribute] [amount] |
Modify an attribute by an amount. Example: player.modav strength 10. |
player.setav [variable] [number] |
Set an actor value to a number. This is not the same operation as modav; changing stats with it may unlock perks, according to PC Gamer. |
player.additem [item ID] [amount] |
Add a specified quantity of an item to the player’s inventory. |
player.additem 0000000f [amount] |
Add bottlecaps. |
player.additem 0000000a [amount] |
Add bobby pins. |
NPCs, combat AI, and factions
| Command | Effect and caution |
|---|---|
tai |
Toggle NPC AI. |
tcai |
Toggle combat AI. |
kill or kill [NPC ID] |
Kill the selected target or a specified actor. Confirm the target before using it. |
resurrect or resurrect [NPC ID] |
Resurrect the selected or specified actor. PC Gamer notes that a resurrected headless NPC remains headless. |
killall |
Affects actors in the loaded area. Sources differ in how they describe its treatment of essential actors and companions; do not use it as a casual troubleshooting command. |
player.AddToFaction [faction ID] [0 or 1] |
Add the player to a faction, using the specified faction ID and the documented 0 or 1 argument. |
player.RemoveFromFaction [faction ID] |
Remove the player from a specified faction. |
PC Gamer lists setav CA_affinity [number] for companion affinity, but reports that modav CA_affinity did not show an effect. Treat affinity changes as uncertain rather than relying on them to repair a companion relationship.
Quest commands: use with care
| Command | Effect and risk |
|---|---|
completeallobjectives [Quest ID] |
Complete the current objectives for a specified quest. |
resetquest [Quest ID] |
Reset a specified quest. This can alter progression and is not a general-purpose fix. |
completequest [Quest ID] |
Complete a specified quest. |
caqs |
A high-risk command associated with broad quest completion. References differ on whether its scope is the main quest or quest progression more generally, so do not use it without a verified explanation for your game version. |
Quest commands can push the game into states that ordinary play would not produce. If a quest is stuck, identify the quest and exact objective before attempting a change; a broad completion or reset command may skip stages or create further problems.

Risks, saves, and recovery
Bethesda says Fallout 4’s in-game console is primarily a debugging tool and is unsupported. Its support page warns that commands may cause issues including broken quests, loss of fast travel, and broken AI, and advises using them at your own risk. Bethesda’s recommended recovery is to load an earlier save from before the command was used: Bethesda Support: What do I do if my game has an issue after using a console command?
- Keep a manual save from before testing, separate from the save you continue playing.
- Prefer narrowly targeted commands over broad commands that affect a loaded area or quest progression.
- If a problem appears after a command, return to an earlier save rather than layering more commands onto an uncertain state.
- Do not assume commands are reversible, harmless, or identical across versions and mod setups.
The commands here are representative practical examples drawn from a command guide updated in January 2025 and other references; they are not a tested, exhaustive inventory. Neither a blanket claim about achievements nor a universal behavior across every game version and mod setup is established here.
