Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a first run in Fallout 76, follow the early quests, explore the Forest when a fight feels too hard, and try different weapons before committing to a build. You can reconfigure your SPECIAL and Perk Cards at level 25, so early choices are experiments—not permanent mistakes. A practical first session is to meet the Wayward characters, follow the early Responders content toward Morgantown Airport, cook food and boil water, and build only the C.A.M.P. facilities you need now.
What to do first
- Follow the opening quests. Bethesda’s newcomer guide directs new players toward the Wayward and early Responders content.
- Explore the Forest if a quest is too difficult. Use the region to explore and gain levels rather than repeatedly pushing through a fight that is beyond your current gear or character.
- Continue the Responders route toward Morgantown Airport. The guide recommends searching there for the Small Backpack Plan.
- Try a few weapons and Perk Cards. Pay attention to which range and combat style feel comfortable; you can adjust your character later.
- Cook and prepare what you gather. Cook raw food and boil water before consuming them, and keep an eye on radiation.
- Set up a simple C.A.M.P. Start with useful basics and expand as you find plans and materials.
How leveling and character choices work
Every SPECIAL attribute starts at one point. Bethesda’s SPECIAL support page says you receive one point to assign at each level from 2 through 50, for 49 assignable points in total. You also earn Perks as you level, so early selections can support the weapons you have and the style you are trying rather than locking you into a final build.

Reconfigure at level 25
At level 25, Punch Card Machines let you change SPECIAL and Perk Card selections and save loadouts. Bethesda’s Punch Card Machine support article says each character can have up to two loadout slots. Machines are available at train stations, The Crater, Foundation, and player C.A.M.P.s.
Specialize after you have tried options
Bethesda’s 2024 level 20 loadout guide presents several approaches rather than a single required beginner build. Its examples include automatic rifles, two-handed melee, non-automatic pistols, shotguns, and V.A.T.S.-focused play. Bethesda’s 2021 newcomer guide suggests experimenting with Perk Cards at lower levels and beginning to specialize around level 50. Treat that as a broad progression pointer, not a reason to avoid experimenting earlier.
#1 Best Overall
Post-level-50 progression descriptions can be sensitive to game updates. Bethesda’s support page describes continuing Perk choices and options involving new cards or reallocating a SPECIAL point; check current in-game information and patch notes before relying on detailed rules for later progression.
Choose a weapon by range and feel
There is no universally best beginner weapon established by Bethesda’s starter material. Instead, compare how each option fits your preferred combat distance and whether you want to use V.A.T.S. Matching Perk Cards improve the performance of the weapon styles they support.
| Approach | Combat distance and feel | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic rifle | Ranged, sustained fire | Try it if you prefer keeping distance and firing in bursts or continuously; choose Perk Cards that support the weapon type. |
| Two-handed melee | Close range | Choose it if you like fighting up close and want to focus on melee-supporting Perks. |
| Non-automatic pistol | Ranged, deliberate shots | A fit for players who prefer a lighter, measured ranged style; match Perks to the weapon. |
| Shotgun | Close to medium range | Consider it if you want a close-range firearm rather than a long-range approach. |
| V.A.T.S.-focused play | Depends on the weapon | This describes a targeting preference that can pair with different weapon choices; Bethesda’s guide includes a V.A.T.S.-focused example. |
These are starting points, not rankings. As Parker Wilhelm, Bethesda’s Content Manager, put it in the 2024 loadout guide: “Your playstyle is yours, and these loadouts are great jumping off points for building out your unique character, so experiment!”

Keep weapons and armor useful
Workbenches let you modify weapons and armor. Bethesda’s weapon and armor modification support page says mods can be found while exploring, obtained by scrapping gear, or purchased from vendors. Scrapping an item can teach its modification plan, so excess equipment can be useful even when you do not plan to keep it.

A magnifying-glass marker can then help you spot that component among loot. Scrap unwanted weapons and gear for materials and a chance to learn some modifications.
Food, water, and radiation
Hunger and thirst meters are worth keeping filled because food and drink provide benefits. Prepare them safely: cook raw food and boil water first to reduce disease risk. Food, drink, and the environment can also expose you to radiation, so check your radiation level as you explore.

Your C.A.M.P. is a portable home base for useful facilities and shelter. Bethesda’s C.A.M.P. support page says you can move it from the Pip-Boy. It disappears from the world when you log out and returns when you join a world, provided the location is available.

Prioritize what you will use now: workstations for crafting, a way to cook, storage, or simple shelter. Build within the materials you have, then add facilities as plans and supplies accumulate. C.A.M.P. plans can come from vendors, the world, workshop capture or defense, quests, and events.

Keep the layout easy to relocate
A stored blueprint may be awkward to place on different terrain after moving your C.A.M.P. A compact, straightforward design is easier to rebuild or place in separate components if the new location does not suit the old layout.
Teams and public events
Bethesda’s newcomer guide describes Normal Teams, where players can invite specific people, and Public Teams. Joining a team can make exploration or difficult events more manageable, especially if you are playing with others. The guide also says successful public events can award better reward tiers; it does not promise a particular reward or schedule, so treat an event as an opportunity rather than a guaranteed payout.
