What changes in Chess960?
Chess960, also known as Fischer Random, uses a different arrangement of pieces on the back rank. The bishops must begin on opposite-colored squares, and the king must begin between the two rooks. Pawns and pieces otherwise use their normal chess moves and the goal remains to checkmate the opponent.
Because the back-rank arrangement changes, players cannot rely on the same standard opening position. Chess.com describes the variant as reducing the impact of memorized opening theory; it does not remove the need to think ahead or prepare.

How castling works—and how to enter it
Chess960 castling can look unusual because the king and rook may start on different squares than they do in standard chess. The destination squares are fixed:
| Castle | King finishes | Rook finishes |
|---|---|---|
| Kingside | g-file | f-file |
| Queenside | c-file | d-file |
The king and the rook involved must not have moved, the squares between them must be clear, and the king cannot castle out of or through check. The check restriction applies to the king, not to the rook passing across an attacked square.
