It is no longer the game’s next upcoming expansion; Bethesda later announced Raven Rock for 2027.
Walton Goggins voices The Ghoul in Fallout 76: Burning Springs, and the character sends players on bounty missions across a newly expanded Ohio wasteland. But in Ars Technica’s October 2025 hands-on preview, Samuel Axon found the more consequential change was not the TV-series tie-in: it was the accumulated work on combat, balance, bug fixes, quality of life, technology, and base building that had changed how the game felt to him.

What Burning Springs adds to Fallout 76
Bethesda described Burning Springs as a large map expansion into post-nuclear Ohio, adding characters, quests, and bounty-hunting missions. The Ghoul, voiced by Walton Goggins, meets players in Highway Town and acts as their contact for bounties. Bethesda announced the update as free for Fallout 76 players, with a Dec. 2, 2025 release date; that date has passed. Bethesda’s release announcement and its Burning Springs preview describe the setting and update.
Creative Director Jonathan Rush said, “Ohio is a desert wasteland now,” and that the region “wasn’t ever really explored in the past Fallout games, so this is all new territory for us.” The new landscape gives the update its own regional identity, while its core ingredients—exploration, combat, quests, and shared events—remain familiar Fallout 76 fare.

What the hands-on preview actually covered
Samuel Axon’s Ars Technica preview followed a Bethesda gameplay event where he spent several hours with the update. His playable time included two bounty formats: one designed for solo play and another framed as a public event with other players. He explored the Ohio setting for more than two hours, saw a settlement populated with many NPCs, and played a public event built around a junkyard battle with a cyborg Deathclaw.
There is an important distinction between the demo and what the developers described. Axon was told that the story questline would involve the Rust King, an intelligent Super Mutant, but he did not play those quests during the event. The preview therefore offers a direct impression of exploration and bounties, not a hands-on judgment of the Rust King storyline.

Rush described the bounty system as “a really fun system” that would “take them all over Burning Springs.” The two formats Axon tried suggest a mix of individual target hunting and group activity, though the preview does not establish how much content or variety the full update ultimately offers.
Why the celebrity connection was not the main draw
Goggins’s performance gives Burning Springs an immediate link to the Fallout television series, but Axon’s central point was that the broader evolution of Fallout 76 mattered more to the experience. Writing as a longtime player, he credited improvements across combat, balance, bug fixes, quality of life, technology, and base building with having a greater effect on how the game now feels than the celebrity casting alone. That is his assessment from the preview and his history with the game, not a measured comparison.

- Hydro Tech Exo Power Armor: Deep water power armor or interesting way to catch fish by hand? This Power Armor is probably not best used for that.
- Appalachian Contessa Prefab: Place the Appalachian Contessa in your C.A.M.P. and be the captain of your own ship.
- Live Bait Barrel: Have a fresh selection of fishing bait available in your C.A.M.P. to help you catch some fish.
- Floating Bouy Set: For those who likes to flot things around, even in radiated water
- Charmcaster Fishing Rod: For those who said fising is a boring hobey
He also characterized Burning Springs as more of the existing game, presented with a different regional flavor, rather than a redesign. That matters if you are deciding whether to return: a new map and bounty loop may offer fresh reasons to explore, but they do not amount to a different kind of game.
Is Burning Springs worth trying if you bounced off Fallout 76?
It depends on what made you leave. The preview supports a useful distinction between a change in the game’s feel and a change in its underlying format:

- ATOM PACK — Add 500 Atoms to your Fallout 76 balance.
- IN-GAME CURRENCY — Use Atoms as in-game currency in Fallout 76.
- CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION — Spend Atoms on a variety of customization items for your character.
- ATOMIC SHOP — Visit the in-game Atomic Shop to see what is available.
- If your main frustration was combat or rough edges: Axon’s account suggests that ongoing improvements made the game feel better to him than it had earlier in its life. That may make a return more appealing, but the preview does not promise that every former pain point is fixed.
- If you want new places to explore or repeatable targets: Burning Springs adds a distinct Ohio setting and bounty missions, including a solo format and a public event format that Axon tried.
- If you dislike multiplayer, looter-shooter combat, or survival-crafting: Axon did not recommend the update as a conversion point for players who reject those fundamentals. The region adds content within that framework rather than replacing it.
- If the Rust King story is your main interest: Treat the preview as an introduction, not a verdict; Axon did not play that questline at the event.
In short, the best case for returning is that you already have some appetite for Fallout 76 and want more reasons to roam its world. Burning Springs is a weaker pitch if what you wanted was a single-player Fallout experience or a fundamental overhaul.

Burning Springs was a 2025 release, not Fallout 76’s next planned expansion in 2026. PC Gamer later reported Bethesda’s announcement of Raven Rock as a major expansion planned for 2027, describing it as a prequel story to Fallout 3. That later announcement changes the meaning of “next” in the original preview’s headline; it does not change what Burning Springs added. PC Gamer’s report on Raven Rock covers the later plan.
