Assign one player to carry the cube, have the rest of the team shoot the target inside Hanged Man’s mouth when it is exposed, and break that target twice. The runner must be holding the cube when the target breaks; then return the cube to the altar to resume damaging the boss. If the cube mechanic is missed, the team is wiped.

What to do during the Hanged Man fight

  1. Choose a cube runner before the altar vials fill. The runner is responsible for picking up and returning the cube. The other players should be ready to attack the mouth target.
  2. Pick up the cube when the mechanic begins. Carrying it stops the altar vials from filling, but Hanged Man becomes immune to ordinary damage.
  3. Attack the target inside Hanged Man’s mouth. The other players should shoot it when exposed during the boss’s shockwave attack. Break the target twice. A player needs to be carrying the cube when each break happens for the altar vials to drain.
  4. Return the cube to the altar. Once the required breaks have drained the altar mechanism, put the cube back in its original position. The team can then resume its normal damage phase.

How the cube and altar vials work

The cube mechanic is a race against the altar’s four red vials filling. Destructoid’s July 2024 walkthrough reports a ten-minute encounter timer, with a cube phase needed every two minutes starting at the eight-minute mark. If nobody picks up the cube in time, the group is wiped. These timings come from that guide, not a Hanged Man-specific confirmation in Nexon’s current guide or the reviewed 2026 patch notes.

Prima Games’ July 2024 guide explains that picking up the cube stops the vials from filling, while making the boss immune to ordinary damage. The team therefore has to switch targets: the runner carries the cube, and the others damage the mouth target. When that target is destroyed while the cube is being carried, the altar vials drain; the target must be broken twice.

Assigning roles and avoiding a failed cycle

The cube runner

Pick someone who can stay alive and keep moving through the boss’s area attacks. Their priority during the mechanic is carrying the cube and being in possession of it when the mouth target breaks—not trying to deal ordinary damage to an immune boss.

The rest of the team

Focus fire on the mouth target when it becomes exposed during the shockwave attack. Coordinate the two breaks with the runner so the cube is being carried at the moment the target is destroyed. Shooting other parts of the boss during this window does not replace the required mouth-target breaks.

When the cycle is complete

After the two target breaks have drained the altar mechanism, the runner returns the cube to its starting position. The team can then attack Hanged Man normally until the next cube phase.

What to attack outside the cube phase

Destructoid’s guide identifies the head core cover, rear cover, and sensor as weak points during the normal damage phase. Nexon’s general advice for Void Intercept Battles is to learn the Colossus’s weak points and prepare with suitable attributes, weapons, and modules. Its guide describes these as team battles for up to four players and directs players to Seneca to participate: Nexon’s The First Descendant game guide.

Use the weapons and modules your team can bring to bear reliably on the exposed weak points. The cited guides do not establish universal damage thresholds or a build that guarantees a particular number of cube cycles.

Current difficulty context

Nexon’s July 15, 2026 Update 1.3.34 says Void Intercept Battle: Abyss and Challenge were removed and Hard difficulty was changed to Extreme. The update covers Steam, Xbox, and PS5, but the reviewed notes do not describe a Hanged Man-specific mechanic change: Nexon Update 1.3.34. The detailed Hanged Man walkthroughs cited here date from July 2024, so their encounter timing and tactical details should be read as guide-reported rather than as mechanics Nexon revalidated in that update.
