What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Missing enemies and a character that seems to vanish after a disconnect usually have different causes, so the first job is sorting which problem you have. Bethesda has not published a universal respawn timer for ordinary open-world enemies, so no reliable countdown exists to plan around. The timing it does publish applies to Activities and specific events. For a server disconnect, check Bethesda’s status portal before changing anything on your own system. For a character that appears to be missing, check the Character section in the main menu first.

Fixing a server disconnect
Work through these steps in order. Stop at the first step that explains the problem, because later steps are only useful when the service is running.
Step 1: Check the Bethesda Status Portal
Bethesda’s support article for the “Disconnected From Server” error directs players to its Status Portal first. If the portal shows services as operational, move to the next step. If services are down, there is nothing reliable to fix locally; wait for Bethesda or your platform to restore service. Check your console or PC platform’s network status as well, since a platform-side problem can produce the same timeout.

Step 2: Restart the game and test your connection
Bethesda’s error guidance recommends closing the game completely, relaunching it, and checking your internet connection. If you are on Wi-Fi:
- Test a wired connection if one is available. An Ethernet cable is the only accessory this test requires.
- Try another network if one is practical, such as a phone hotspot or a different location.
- Power-cycle your modem and router, then retest.
These steps are diagnostic. A failed test tells you where the problem is, but it does not prove your hardware is defective.
Step 3: Check firewall, antivirus, and ports on PC
On PC, Bethesda advises making sure your firewall or antivirus is not blocking Fallout 76 or Steam. Its PC connection guidance lists the following ports:
Rank #2
- Bethesda Game Studios, the award-winning creators of Skyrim and Fallout 4, welcome you to Fallout 76, the online prequel where every surviving human is a real person. Work together, or not, to survive. Under the threat of nuclear annihilation, you’ll experience the largest, most dynamic world ever created in the legendary Fallout universe
- Reclamation Day, 2102. Twenty-five years after the bombs fall, you and your fellow Vault Dwellers—chosen from the nation’s best and brightest – emerge into post-nuclear America. Play solo or join together as you explore, quest, build, and triumph against the wasteland’s greatest threats
- TCP ports 80 and 443
- UDP ports 3000 to 3010
Port forwarding is an advanced router change. Use your router’s own documentation for it, and only if you have a clear reason to open ports. Bethesda’s timeout guidance also points PC players to Steam’s file verification. In the Steam client, right-click Fallout 76 in your Library, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files.
Step 4: Contact support with specifics
If the error continues, follow the support instructions for your platform and send Bethesda the exact error text along with the steps you have already tried. Bethesda’s articles cover several different error types, so a fix for one timeout is not guaranteed to resolve another disconnect.
Recovering a character that seems to be missing
A missing character after a disconnect is not always a lost character. Bethesda’s guidance on this issue turns on one detail: when a character was saved.
Rank #3
- FALLOUT 76 — Emerge from your shelter in 2102 and explore a massive open-world RPG set in the West Virginia wilderness, 25 years after the Great War.
- PLAY YOUR WAY — Explore solo, team up in online co-op for 2–4 players, or join online multiplayer for 2–24 players.
- BUILD YOUR SURVIVOR — Use Fallout’s S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system to shape your character, from a heavily armored Power Armor tank to a stealthy sniper or a build of your own.
- CREATE YOUR CAMP — Choose a location and design a C.A.M.P. in the wasteland, from a mountainside fortress to a woodland estate, raider outpost, or mad scientist lair.
- QUEST ACROSS APPALACHIA — Take on story quests involving competing factions and meaningful choices that shape your adventure.
- Open the main menu and check the Character section first.
- Characters are not saved until they leave Vault 76.
- If you disconnected or quit before leaving Vault 76, the character must be created again. This is the exception, and it is narrower than a general loss of progress.
- If the character had already left Vault 76 and still does not appear in the Character menu, contact Bethesda Customer Support.
Do not assume that an ordinary disconnect deletes an established character. The official guidance supports the Vault 76 exception only.

Enemy spawning depends on the context. Ordinary open-world areas, Activities, and events are governed differently, so identify which one you were in before drawing conclusions.

Bethesda has not published a general respawn timer for ordinary open-world enemies. Respawn times quoted by players are not confirmed by Bethesda, and you should not plan around them as fixed rules.

Activities and the Backwoods rotation
Bethesda’s 2026 Activity explanation describes a time-based rotation for certain Activities. According to that support article, a new Activity becomes available approximately every 10 minutes, depending on what is available and completed. The article lists exceptions, including Powering Up and Riding Shotgun. This schedule determines which Activity is available. It does not describe how often ordinary enemies respawn.
Event-specific spawn changes
Bethesda’s release notes for The Backwoods describe event-specific enemy adjustments. Always Vigilant received more frequent enemy spawns, and Line in the Sand received adjusted spawn timers. These changes apply to those events and can change with later updates, so check the current patch notes before assuming how an event behaves.
Checklist when enemies still do not appear
- Note the exact location and whether you were in an Activity or Public Event.
- Check whether other players were present, since shared sessions can behave differently from solo play.
- Try a different world to see whether the problem follows your session or stays with the location. Bethesda has not confirmed that changing worlds restores any particular spawn.
- Compare your observations against the current patch notes for the event.
If the enemies still fail to appear after these checks, the issue is most likely tied to the event or location and should be reported to Bethesda Support with your notes.
