Fallout 76 plans come from several sources, not one universal location: you can find them in the world, buy them from vendors, or earn them from events and quests. Check your Pip-Boy’s Notes section to see plans you have, and search player CAMP vendors when you want to buy a particular plan. Bethesda’s beginner guide names one specific example: the Small Backpack Plan can be found inside Morgantown Airport during the Responders questline.

Where plans come from in Fallout 76

Bethesda’s general guidance is that plans can be found in the world, bought from vendors, or rewarded for events and quests. That describes the broad acquisition routes; it is not a plan-by-plan location list. The source for any particular weapon, armor, crafting, or CAMP plan can differ, so verify a named plan separately rather than assuming it uses one of these routes.

Successful workshop defenses can also award a variety of building plans, according to Bethesda’s beginner guide. Treat that as an example of a possible reward route, not a guarantee that a specific plan will drop.

How to search for plans

  1. Check your inventory: Open the Pip-Boy or inventory and look in the Notes section to see plans you have. Bethesda’s advice is, “Check your ‘Notes’ section for Plans!” (Bethesda’s Fallout 76 tips)
  2. Search the world and progress through quests: Plans may appear as world finds or quest rewards. For an early-game example, search the interior of Morgantown Airport during the Responders questline for the Small Backpack Plan. Bethesda says it can be crafted at an Armor Workbench to let you carry more loot. (Bethesda’s beginner guide)
  3. Try events and activities: Events are another general plan-reward route, but a reward list for an activity does not establish that a particular plan drops there. Bethesda’s March 3, 2026 Backwoods update notes describe changes to Activity and Public Event rewards without providing a complete, fixed plan-source list. (March 2026 update notes)
  4. Check vendor inventories: Browse NPC vendors and player CAMP vendors for plans you want to buy. Bethesda specifically recommends checking CAMP vendors because another player may offer the same plan at a lower price. Stock and prices can vary, so compare before spending caps. (Bethesda’s Fallout 76 tips)

Use maps to explore, not to confirm a plan spawn

Maps at train stations and lookout towers can reveal nearby points of interest. You still need to visit locations in person to fully discover them, and a marked point of interest does not prove that a plan is there. Use these maps to guide exploration, then rely on plan-specific evidence for a particular location. (Bethesda’s beginner guide)

How to choose a route for one specific plan

Before repeatedly checking locations or spending caps, compare the available route using these questions:

  • Certainty: Is there a named quest or search location for this plan, or only a broad reward pool?
  • Cost: Can you pursue it through exploration or rewards, or would buying it from a vendor require caps?
  • Time and repetition: Is this a one-time quest or location check, or will you need repeated event runs or vendor visits?
  • Availability: Is the source a stable world or quest route, or could it depend on seasonal rewards or changing player-vendor stock?
  • Evidence: Is the claim backed by current, plan-specific information, or only by an outdated list or player recollection?

The official general guidance does not provide drop odds, exact cap prices, or completion times. Avoid treating an unverified location or reward claim as guaranteed.

Can you sell plans to NPC vendors?

No. Bethesda Support’s Spanish-language answer says NPC vendors do not buy plans from players; plans can be sold only to other players. To sell one, use a player-to-player route such as a CAMP vendor. (Bethesda Support)
