Neither Fandom nor independent fan wikis are automatically better. For a quick lookup, use the specific wiki with the most current, complete, well-sourced page. For editing—or deciding whether a community should move—compare its rules, licensing, reading experience, governance, and the people available to maintain it. “Independent” means separate from a platform; it is not a guarantee of quality.
What is the difference between Fandom and an independent fan wiki?
Fandom is a centralized, free, ad-supported wiki hosting service focused mainly on pop culture, including television, film, and games, according to MediaWiki.org’s overview of Fandom. Fandom uses MediaWiki software; a software platform, however, does not determine whether an individual wiki is accurate, complete, or well moderated.

An independent fan wiki is hosted outside Fandom, but the label covers many different arrangements. Each community may have its own host, rules, technical setup, funding, and moderation. Check the particular site rather than assuming independent wikis all offer the same features or protections.
Which is better for finding information?
Choose the page, not the platform name. Check whether the wiki has active editors, recent revisions, useful citations, and a clear distinction between confirmed information and speculation. For consequential claims, verify against official materials or reliable reporting.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Make sure you have found the current wiki
- Search for the game or topic plus “wiki.”
- Check whether the result is the site the community currently recommends. Look for a migration notice, successor link, or recent update.
- Compare relevant pages for recency, citations, and completeness. A well-indexed older site may still appear after a community has moved.
Compare the actual reading experience
Try the page on the device you use. Check navigation, accessibility, ads, embedded media, and loading behavior rather than assuming the experience is identical across sites. In March 2026, GamesRadar reported that GTA Wiki editors cited advertising and videos added without their consent among their concerns about Fandom. That report describes complaints associated with one migration; it does not establish a general platform-wide effect.
Which is better for editing?
The best place to edit is usually the community’s active, preferred site, where your work can be reviewed and maintained. Before contributing, read its rules and check account requirements, moderation, page protection, acceptable content, and how disputes are handled. Fandom’s community policy describes its wikis as open and community edited; an open editing model does not mean every page is unprotected or every edit is accepted.

Check whether the wiki is public or private
Fandom says its wikis are viewable by everyone and that it does not offer private wikis. Administrators can require contributors to log in before editing. A group that needs a closed workspace should verify that its chosen independent host actually supports private access; independence alone does not establish that it does.
Check the terms before reusing content
Fandom’s licensing information says wiki text is generally licensed under CC BY-SA unless otherwise permitted. Media files can have different terms: check the description and license for each asset, and preserve any required attribution. Do not assume an image uses the same license as the article text.

What should a community consider before leaving Fandom?
Moving can give a community a different hosting and governance arrangement, but it takes sustained work. Editors need to determine what content can legally transfer, move or rebuild pages, guide readers to the new destination, and keep information current. They should also plan who will maintain the old and new sites during the transition.
In March 2026, GamesRadar reported that the GTA Wiki had migrated away from Fandom. The report described the editors’ stated concerns about advertising, videos added without consent, and enforcement of content rules, and noted earlier fan-wiki departures. It is an example of migration being possible—not evidence that every Fandom community has the same experience or that moving is effortless.

GamesRadar also reported the GTA Wiki editors’ figure that more than 60% of that wiki’s viewers were logged-out mobile visitors. That is an attributed figure about the GTA Wiki’s audience, not a platform-wide measurement; it underscores why a migrating community may need to consider how easily readers can reach its pages.

| What matters | What to check |
|---|---|
| Finding a reliable answer | Page citations, revision history, completeness, and whether the community still treats the site as current. |
| Reading on your device | The specific page’s navigation, accessibility, ads, embeds, and loading behavior on desktop and mobile. |
| Contributing | Account rules, moderation, page protection, content policies, and dispute resolution. |
| Restricting access | Whether the host supports the access controls the group needs. Fandom wikis are publicly viewable. |
| Reusing material | The wiki’s terms and the separate license for each media asset, with attribution where required. |
| Moving or starting a wiki | Who will handle hosting, legal transfer, page migration, reader redirects, ongoing updates, and long-term upkeep. |
Fandom’s forking policy discusses licenses that may apply to content and Fandom’s position that communities can continue elsewhere. Review the applicable terms before transferring material. The GTA Wiki’s reported move shows why the team’s capacity to maintain the destination matters as much as the decision to leave.
