These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes. Start by noting whether one game crashes or the Deck itself is unstable, and change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped.
First, work out whether the crash is game-specific or system-wide
If only one game closes or freezes, note its name and what happens just before the crash. That can help you retest consistently, but it does not by itself establish a compatibility bug. If several games crash or SteamOS itself is unstable, prioritize the system update and restart before adjusting an individual game.

Install SteamOS updates and restart
Valve’s first checks for system instability are to install available system updates and restart the Steam Deck. The software guide applies to both Steam Deck LCD and OLED models.
- Press the Steam button and open Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Install any system update offered on that screen.
- Restart from the Software Updates screen, or open Steam > Power > Restart.
- After the Deck restarts, launch the affected game and check whether the same crash occurs.
This updates SteamOS; it is separate from updating a game or choosing a Proton compatibility tool. Valve does not identify a universal cause for game crashes, so an update may not resolve a title-specific issue. Valve’s Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide has the current instructions.

Close third-party Desktop Mode applications
If an unstable application is running through Steam, Valve recommends exiting or disabling third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, then restarting and testing again. This is a useful reversible check when background software may be involved; it does not identify a particular app as the cause.
Valve’s software troubleshooting guide and basic use and troubleshooting guide cover these checks.

Check the game’s Deck Verified status
Open the game’s Steam Store page and review its Steam Deck compatibility section. Valve uses four categories:
Recommended Free Tools
- Verified: Meets Valve’s Deck compatibility criteria.
- Playable: Works, but may require some adjustment or have a compatibility limitation.
- Unsupported: Does not currently meet Valve’s compatibility criteria.
- Unknown: Valve has not tested the game; this rating does not mean the game is necessarily broken.
Read any listed requirements or limitations rather than relying on the label alone. A rating can inform your next test, but it is not a diagnosis of why a particular copy of a game crashes.

Try a different Proton compatibility tool
For a Steam game, you can override its compatibility tool in the game’s Library properties. Valve’s general guidance is to try the latest Proton version when troubleshooting software compatibility. Do not assume that changing Proton will help every game, or that a particular version is right for a title without title-specific evidence.
- Open Library and select the game.
- Open its menu, then choose Properties.
- Select Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose the latest Proton entry available in the list, then launch the game and retest.
Valve notes that if only the Linux version of a game is installed, forcing Proton may cause Steam to download the Windows version. Allow for that download before judging the result. If the change makes things worse, return to the Compatibility setting and disable the forced tool to restore the game’s default selection. Proton is a per-game compatibility choice; it is not a SteamOS system update. See Valve’s software guide for its guidance and caveat.

Retest carefully, then adjust graphics if needed
After changing Proton or another game setting, test the same game again before making another change. Keeping each test separate makes it easier to tell whether the crash changed.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Escalate persistent Steam Deck problems
If the Deck remains unstable after updating and restarting, Valve suggests optional Steam Deck Beta participation, discussion in SteamOS or Steam Deck communities, or contacting Steam Support if the problem persists. Beta software is an optional troubleshooting path, not a required update for everyone. Start with Valve’s software troubleshooting guide and basic troubleshooting guide.
Use SteamOS recovery options only for severe or persistent system problems. Valve documents rollback, repair or re-imaging, and factory reset in its SteamOS recovery and troubleshooting guide. These options are more disruptive than changing a game’s Proton setting; consult Valve’s current instructions and understand the local-data implications before choosing one.
The software guide focuses on Steam Deck LCD and OLED. It says most information should also apply to third-party AMD devices compatible with SteamOS, but recommends contacting the device manufacturer when the hardware is not a Steam Deck.
