Far Cry 4 crashes on PC for different reasons depending on when it fails. A Steam copy can also depend on Ubisoft Connect, so a game that closes after the Ubisoft splash screen needs a different check from one that crashes after 20 minutes of play.
| What happens | Start with |
|---|---|
| Nothing happens after clicking Play | Ubisoft Connect, permissions, antivirus, and missing files |
| Ubisoft splash appears, then the game closes | Ubisoft Connect, overlays, configuration, and compatibility |
| Black screen, then crash | GPU driver, display mode, fullscreen settings, and overlays |
| Crash during loading or when entering a save | Configuration, save/profile data, and mods |
| Crash after several minutes | Driver stability, overheating, overclocks, and background tools |
| Crash only with mods | Remove mods and verify the installation |
| Missing executable or quarantined file | Antivirus history, then file verification |
| Steam remains stuck on “Preparing to launch” | Steam files, Ubisoft Connect, and account authentication |
Try the low-risk fixes first. Do not begin with registry edits, random DLL downloads, unofficial executables, or a full Windows reset.

Quick checklist
- Restart Windows.
- Install pending Windows and graphics-driver updates.
- Verify Far Cry 4’s files.
- Update or repair Ubisoft Connect.
- Disable overlays and monitoring utilities.
- Test permissions and display compatibility settings.
- Reset backed-up configuration files.
- Clean-boot Windows or reinstall only the affected component.
Before troubleshooting: check your storefront
Far Cry 4 is available on PC through Steam and Ubisoft. Steam’s listing requires a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect for PC play, so launching from Steam does not remove Ubisoft Connect from the troubleshooting chain. See the Steam listing and requirements.
Identify whether your copy is from Steam, Ubisoft Connect PC, or another authorized storefront. Use that storefront for normal launching, but check both the storefront installation and Ubisoft Connect when authentication or launcher handoff fails.
#1 Best Overall
- How to Claim: Open Ubisoft Connect (PC), select three lines icon in top left corner, choose “Activate a Key,” enter key in “Activation Code” field, select “Activate,” and your game will be available on the “Games” tab
1. Restart Windows, then update Windows and your GPU driver
Try this first when: the crash began after an update, the PC has been running for days, or other graphics-heavy programs are also unstable.
- Choose Start → Power → Restart; do not merely sign out.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Download the current driver for your GPU from the manufacturer: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Restart again and test Far Cry 4 before launching overlays or tuning software.
Steam recommends updating Windows and computer drivers when a game will not launch, and Microsoft also lists outdated video drivers and DirectX-related components among possible causes of game crashes. Steam launch troubleshooting.
If the crash started immediately after a driver update: a clean driver reinstall or a rollback may be more sensible than installing the newest package again. Laptop owners should also check the laptop manufacturer’s graphics guidance, especially on hybrid Intel/NVIDIA or Intel/AMD systems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Verify the game files
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Far Cry 4, or select its gear icon.
- Choose Properties → Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- When it finishes, restart Steam and test the game.
Steam says verification can replace missing or damaged content and is appropriate for crashes. Some files may fail validation normally because they are local configuration files, so that message alone does not prove the repair failed. Steam’s file-verification instructions.
Ubisoft Connect PC
- Open Ubisoft Connect and select Games.
- Select Far Cry 4.
- Open the game’s properties or management menu.
- Choose the currently available Verify files, Verify game files, or repair option.
Ubisoft Connect’s labels can change. Follow the label visible in your current client rather than relying on an old screenshot or menu path.
What verification cannot repair: Ubisoft account authentication, broken launcher installation, GPU-driver conflicts, permissions, overheating, or a mod that changes files again after verification.
3. Update, repair, or reinstall Ubisoft Connect
Prioritize this when: Steam starts but Ubisoft Connect closes, the game stops at the Ubisoft splash screen, the launcher loops, or the wrong Ubisoft account opens.

Rank #2
- How to Claim: Open Ubisoft Connect (PC), select three lines icon in top left corner, choose “Activate a Key,” enter key in “Activation Code” field, select “Activate,” and your game will be available on the “Games” tab
- Close Far Cry 4, Steam, and Ubisoft Connect.
- Open Ubisoft Connect directly.
- Sign in to the Ubisoft account linked to the game.
- Allow the client to update itself.
- Launch Far Cry 4 from its normal storefront.
- If Ubisoft Connect appears damaged, uninstall and reinstall it from Ubisoft’s official site.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Community reports describe Steam-to-Ubisoft Connect handoff and authentication failures, but those reports are anecdotal rather than confirmation of a Far Cry 4-specific Ubisoft defect. See the relevant community discussion.
Do not repeatedly unlink and relink accounts without understanding the consequences. Reinstalling Steam alone also may not repair a broken Ubisoft Connect installation.
4. Disable overlays and background utilities
Temporarily exit these programs before testing:
- Steam Overlay and Ubisoft Connect Overlay
- Discord Overlay
- NVIDIA or AMD recording overlays
- Xbox Game Bar
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server
- RGB, monitoring, macro, and controller-remapping tools
- Third-party antivirus overlays or injectors
- Exit the suspected utility completely.
- Check Task Manager to confirm it is no longer running.
- Launch Far Cry 4.
- If the game works, re-enable tools one at a time.
The last program re-enabled is a likely conflict. Steam’s general launch guidance recommends disabling non-essential software during diagnosis. Read Steam’s troubleshooting guidance.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If a game executable was quarantined, inspect quarantine history and create a narrowly scoped exception only after confirming the file belongs to the legitimate installation.

5. Test permissions, fullscreen behavior, and compatibility
Use this as a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Browse to the Far Cry 4 installation folder.
- Right-click the game executable, likely
FarCry4.exe. - Choose Properties → Compatibility.
- Test Run this program as an administrator.
- If the crash occurs during startup or a display-mode change, test Disable fullscreen optimizations.
- Apply one change at a time and test.
- Undo a setting that does not help.
Running the launcher and game at different privilege levels can create elevation mismatches, so permanent administrator mode is not automatically better.
Windows 11 graphics settings
On Windows 11, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, select the game, and choose Options. You can test a different graphics preference and turn off windowed-game optimizations for that title. Microsoft’s Windows 11 graphics instructions.

This setting is most relevant to windowed or borderless modes. It is not a universal solution for every fullscreen crash.

A damaged display setting, graphics profile, or user configuration can become incompatible with a newer driver or display setup.
- Close Far Cry 4, Steam, and Ubisoft Connect.
- Back up the Far Cry 4 configuration/profile folder.
- Rename the relevant folder by appending something such as
.backupinstead of deleting it. - Start the game and let it generate fresh configuration data.
- Test before restoring individual files.
Do not assume that every file in a profile folder is disposable. Separate graphics/settings data from user profiles and save games. If cloud synchronization is enabled, a damaged local file may be restored from the cloud—or a damaged local file may be uploaded—depending on the launcher’s behavior.
Community posts sometimes recommend registry or profile-folder changes, but these are unofficial and can be risky. Do not use a hard-coded registry path unless it has been independently verified for your exact edition and launcher.
Backup warning: preserve saves before changing profile data or the registry. Rename first so recovery remains possible.

sfc /scannow
If SFC reports component-store problems, run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
These commands repair Windows components; they are not Far Cry 4-specific fixes. They are unlikely to solve a game-only Ubisoft Connect conflict.
Far Cry 4’s published PC requirements specify DirectX 11. Do not download a random “DirectX 12 fix” or DLL from an unofficial website. Use Windows Update, official Microsoft runtime guidance, legitimate installers bundled with the game, or the GPU manufacturer’s driver package. Microsoft’s game-crash guidance.
If the executable is missing
- Check antivirus quarantine.
- Restore a file only if it is verified as part of the legitimate installation.
- Add a narrow exception for the specific game folder or executable if appropriate.
- Verify the game files again.
Steam’s missing-executable guidance identifies quarantine and corrupted or missing files as common causes.
8. Clean-boot Windows, then reinstall only what is broken
A clean boot isolates conflicts from startup software without immediately removing programs.
- Sign in as an administrator.
- Search for and open
msconfig. - Open Services.
- Select Hide all Microsoft services.
- Select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
- Disable enabled startup items.
- Restart and test Far Cry 4.
Microsoft documents clean boot as a way to start Windows with essential drivers and startup programs so software conflicts can be isolated. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions.
Restore normal startup afterward
- Open
msconfig. - On General, select Normal startup.
- On Services, re-enable the services you disabled.
- Re-enable startup applications in Task Manager.
- Restart Windows.
If the clean boot works, restore services and startup applications in groups until the crash returns. That identifies the conflict more reliably than randomly uninstalling software.

Published PC requirements and their limits
The official store listings publish these original-era requirements:
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 64-bit |
| CPU | Intel Core i5-750 2.6 GHz or AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2 GHz | Intel Core i5-2400S 2.5 GHz or AMD FX-8350 4.0 GHz or better |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM |
| GPU | GeForce GTX 460 or Radeon HD 5850, 1 GB VRAM | GeForce GTX 680 or Radeon R9 290X, 2 GB VRAM |
| API | DirectX 11 | |
| Storage | 30 GB | |
| Network | Broadband internet connection | |
These are published requirements, not a guarantee of stable performance on modern Windows and hardware. Ubisoft’s broader Far Cry PC listing references Windows 10 and Windows 11, while the individual Far Cry 4 store requirements retain Windows 10-era wording. That makes Windows 11 a commonly used newer environment, not proof that the original requirements were written specifically for Windows 11. Ubisoft’s Far Cry 4 store page and Ubisoft’s broader Far Cry PC listing.
The listed laptop GPU versions were not officially covered by the original requirements. A PC that meets the minimum specification may still be unstable at high resolutions, with modern overlays, or under an overclock.
Match the symptom to the next fix
| Evidence | Next move |
|---|---|
| Started after a mod | Remove every mod, then verify files |
| Started after a driver update | Clean-reinstall or roll back the driver |
| Steam reports missing executable | Check quarantine, then verify files |
| Crash before the game window | Check Ubisoft Connect, account, permissions, antivirus, and configuration |
| Crash only in borderless mode | Test fullscreen and Windows 11 windowed-game settings |
| Crash only with overlays | Leave the conflicting overlay disabled |
| Several unrelated apps crash | Investigate Windows, RAM, storage, overheating, and drivers |
| Only one save crashes | Back it up and test a new game without overwriting the original |
What not to try first
- Registry deletion: use only with an exact verified path, export backup, purpose, and reversal procedure.
- Random DLL downloads: they can be unsafe or mismatched.
- Unofficial executable replacements: they can create security and account risks.
- Permanent administrator mode: it is a test, not a universal fix.
- Registry cleaners, FPS boosters, VPNs, or new hardware: none is necessary for the evidence-based sequence above.
When to stop and contact support
If Far Cry 4 still crashes after a clean boot and fresh configuration, stop escalating into increasingly risky hacks. Contact Steam technical support or Ubisoft support and provide:
- Exact crash point and any error message
- Windows version
- GPU model and driver version
- CPU and installed RAM
- Storefront and whether Ubisoft Connect opens
- Whether mods or overlays are installed
- File-verification result
- Whether a clean boot and fresh configuration changed the behavior
Frequently Asked Questions
Does verifying Far Cry 4 files fix every crash?
No. It can repair missing or damaged installation files, but it will not normally fix Ubisoft Connect authentication, overlays, drivers, permissions, overheating, or unstable mods.
Do Steam users need Ubisoft Connect for Far Cry 4?
Yes. The PC Steam listing indicates that Far Cry 4 requires a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect, so Steam-to-launcher authentication can be part of the failure.
Should I run Far Cry 4 as administrator permanently?
No. Test administrator mode temporarily. If it does not help, undo the setting; mismatched privilege levels between the launcher and game can create additional problems.
Is Windows 11 officially supported?
Ubisoft’s broader Far Cry PC listing references Windows 11, but the individual Far Cry 4 store requirements retain Windows 10-era wording. Treat Windows 11 as a newer environment rather than a guarantee of compatibility.
The Bottom Line
Start with updates, file verification, Ubisoft Connect, and overlay isolation. Then test compatibility settings and a backed-up configuration reset. Use clean boot and reinstallation only after those checks, and avoid random DLLs or unverified registry fixes.
