The fastest way to fix The Isle on PC is to restart Windows and Steam, verify the game files, repair Easy Anti-Cheat, and confirm that Steam is using the current Evrima branch. If the game opens but shows a black screen, infinite loading, an empty server list, or a connection timeout, use the symptom-specific fixes below instead of immediately reinstalling.

“Not loading” can describe several different problems: the Play button does nothing, the game crashes with a UE4 or fatal error, the screen stays black, loading never finishes, or no servers appear. The correct fix depends on which symptom you see.

Quick symptom guide

What you see Start with
Nothing happens after clicking Play Fixes 1, 2, 3, and 7
Easy Anti-Cheat is not installed Fixes 2, 3, and 7
EAC says a driver is loaded but its file is missing Fixes 1 and 3, then update the named Windows or storage driver
UE4, fatal, or immediate startup crash Fixes 2, 5, 6, and 7
Black or infinite loading screen Fixes 1, 5, 6, and 8
Empty server browser Fixes 4 and 7, then check filters and server status
Connection timeout Fixes 4, 7, and 8

After each fix, launch the game once. Stop when the problem is resolved; there is no reason to perform all eight repairs.

1. Restart Windows and Steam completely

Exit The Isle, then use Steam → Exit rather than simply closing the Steam window. Restart Windows and launch the game before opening Discord overlays, recording tools, mod managers, RGB utilities, or hardware-monitoring software.

  • STRATEGY & OBJECTIVES: Collect lessons and treasures while carefully balancing your rescues across five rounds. Every decision affects scoring, requiring you to adapt strategy while managing limited boat space.
  • STANDALONE 2-PLAYER GAME: A complete standalone experience for two players set in the Isle of Cats universe. Includes Oshax figure, cat tiles, cards, boats, and tokens. No base game required—just pick up and play.

A full reboot clears processes and drivers that may remain loaded after a failed Easy Anti-Cheat attempt. This is especially relevant when EAC reports that a driver is loaded even though its file is missing. Steam also recommends restarting, updating Windows and drivers, disabling nonessential software, verifying files, and checking system requirements in its launch troubleshooting checklist. Steam’s launch troubleshooting guide provides the general checklist.

2. Verify The Isle’s Steam files

  1. Open your Steam Library.
  2. Right-click The Isle and choose Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files.
  4. Click Verify integrity of game files.
  5. Wait for Steam to finish scanning and downloading replacements.
  6. Restart Steam and test the game.

This is the safest repair for incomplete updates, corrupted downloads, missing executables, and damaged anti-cheat files. Steam may say that files were reacquired; that is expected. Do not interrupt the process while Steam is repairing the installation. Verification normally does not delete save data, but back up anything important before making broader changes.

If Steam reports a missing executable or the game still fails after verification, continue to the EAC and configuration fixes rather than assuming the scan ruled out every possible cause. See Steam’s missing-executable guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Repair or reinstall Easy Anti-Cheat

Easy Anti-Cheat can stop the game before the main menu even when the game’s core files are intact.

  1. Right-click The Isle in Steam.
  2. Choose Properties → Installed Files → Browse.
  3. Open the EasyAntiCheat folder.
  4. Run the EAC setup program present in that build, such as EasyAntiCheat_Setup.exe or the current EOS setup executable.
  5. Choose the repair or install option if it appears. Run it as administrator if required.
  6. Restart Windows and launch the game.

Filenames can differ between builds. Use the setup executable that is actually present instead of downloading replacement EAC files from an unofficial website. If the folder or setup program is missing, verify the Steam files again. As a second-line community repair, you can remove the Easy Anti-Cheat folder and then run Steam verification so Steam restores it; this is more destructive than simply repairing the installation. The practical guidance is documented by The Isle’s community troubleshooting guide, which is unaffiliated with Afterthought Studios.

Special case: “driver loaded but file is missing”

Reboot first. If the error returns, update or reinstall the storage or chipset driver named in the message, install pending Windows updates, and verify the game files. The third-party guide identifies dump_iaStorVD.sys as a commonly reported Intel Rapid Storage Technology/VMD-related filename, but the filename can vary by system.

Use sfc /scannow only from an elevated Command Prompt when Windows system-file corruption is suspected. Do not casually change BIOS storage settings such as VMD, AHCI, or RAID mode: an incorrect change can prevent Windows from booting. See the community guide to EAC driver-state errors.

4. Switch to the correct Evrima branch

If you want the current Evrima experience, make sure Steam is using the actively maintained Evrima/public branch shown in the current Steam client. Do not rely on an old branch label because names can change.

  1. Open the Steam Library.
  2. Right-click The Isle and choose Properties.
  3. Open Betas.
  4. Select the current Evrima public branch listed by Steam.
  5. Let Steam download the required build completely.
  6. Restart Steam and launch the game.

Legacy and Evrima use different builds and server ecosystems. A branch mismatch can produce an empty or unexpected server list, failed connections, or guides that do not match your menus. Legacy is not automatically broken; it may simply show a different or much smaller list and may not match the servers you are trying to join. Community guidance on empty server lists and branch mismatches explains this distinction.

5. Reset The Isle’s local Config folder

A corrupted Unreal Engine configuration can survive a reinstall and cause black screens, input problems, graphics crashes, or persistent loading failures.

  1. Close The Isle and Steam.
  2. Press Win + R.
  3. Enter %localappdata% and press Enter.
  4. Open TheIsleSaved.
  5. Rename Config to Config-backup.
  6. Start the game so it can generate fresh settings.

Rename the folder instead of deleting it. This preserves a recovery copy if the reset does not help. The reset can remove keybinds, graphics settings, local preferences, and possibly some skin or presentation selections depending on the current build. Restore the old folder only after closing the game if you need to recover settings. This is community guidance, not a guaranteed cure for every crash; see The Isle common bugs and fixes.

6. Update GPU and Windows drivers, then test DX11

Use this fix for UE4 or fatal errors, immediate crashes after the splash screen, black screens, or failures that began after changing graphics settings or installing a driver update.

  1. Install the latest suitable GPU driver from the manufacturer’s official site.
  2. Install pending Windows updates.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Temporarily disable Steam, Discord, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, and similar monitoring overlays.
  5. Test The Isle again.

Use official sources rather than generic driver-updater programs: NVIDIA driver downloads, AMD support, and Intel’s download center.

Test the DX11 launch option

If the error specifically suggests a DirectX 12 or GPU-initialization problem, add -dx11 as a diagnostic test:

  1. Right-click The Isle in Steam.
  2. Choose Properties.
  3. Stay on General.
  4. Enter -dx11 under Launch Options.
  5. Launch the game.

DX11 may bypass some DX12 initialization failures, but it is not a universal performance improvement. It may limit newer rendering features, and a future build may change how the option works. Remove it if it does not help.

7. Check security software and conflicting background apps

Antivirus, firewall rules, VPNs, injectors, overlays, RGB utilities, capture tools, and hardware monitors can interfere with the game or EAC. Community reports describe security software blocking TheIsleClient-Win64-Shipping.exe or Easy Anti-Cheat, but these reports are anecdotal rather than a universal diagnosis. See examples from the Steam Community and additional launch reports.

  1. Temporarily disable only the relevant third-party security component for one test launch.
  2. If the game works, re-enable protection immediately.
  3. Create the narrowest executable-level exception available for The Isle and EAC.
  4. Check Windows Firewall’s allowed-app list.
  5. Close nonessential overlays, VPNs, injectors, capture programs, and monitoring utilities.
  6. If needed, use a Windows clean boot to identify a conflicting startup service.

Do not permanently disable antivirus or exclude a broad game library folder unless your security vendor specifically requires it. If the exception does not change anything, remove it and continue troubleshooting.

8. Check hardware, server conditions, and reinstall only as a last resort

First, compare your PC with Steam’s listed requirements

The following figures were checked on August 18, 2026; Steam requirements can change, so recheck the store page before publication or purchase.

Component Minimum listed requirement Recommended listed requirement
Operating system Windows 7 64-bit or later Windows 10 64-bit or later
CPU Quad-core Intel/AMD, 3.0 GHz or faster Quad-core Intel/AMD, 3.4 GHz or faster
Memory 8 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
GPU GTX 960 or Radeon R9 280X class or higher; dedicated GPU required GeForce GTX 1070
DirectX Version 11 Version 11
Storage 25 GB available 25 GB available

These are baselines, not a guarantee of stable play. Also check free space on both the installation drive and Windows system drive, drive health, overheating, unstable overclocks or undervolts, high background RAM usage, Windows architecture, and whether the dedicated GPU is being used instead of integrated graphics. The Steam listing requires a dedicated GPU and states that integrated graphics will not work. Check Steam’s current technical information for The Isle.

If the game opens but the server list is empty

  • Confirm the Evrima branch and let Steam finish all updates.
  • Clear name searches and check Official/Unofficial, empty-server, password, and ping filters.
  • Restart Steam and The Isle after a patch.
  • Set Windows time and time zone automatically.
  • Allow the game and EAC through firewall and security software.
  • If the owner provides an address, try Steam’s View → Game Servers → Favorites route.

An incomplete server list can follow a game or server update and does not prove that every server is offline. A server-side problem, branch mismatch, filter, or connection issue can look like a broken installation.

Clean reinstall

Use a clean reinstall only after file verification, EAC repair, branch checking, configuration reset, driver checks, and security checks.

  1. Back up screenshots and any local configuration you want to keep.
  2. Uninstall The Isle through Steam.
  3. Close Steam completely.
  4. Check steamappscommon for a leftover The Isle folder.
  5. Remove only that game’s leftover folder.
  6. Reinstall to a drive with enough free space.
  7. Wait for Steam to finish, select the intended branch, and launch once before restoring overlays or custom settings.

Reinstalling can remove leftover game files, but it will not repair unsupported hardware, faulty drivers, Windows corruption, security blocks, branch mistakes, or server-side outages. It also does not automatically reset files under %localappdata%, so the Config reset may still be necessary. Never use registry cleaners or download replacement DLLs from random websites.

If nothing worked

Before contacting support, record the exact error text, whether the crash occurs before or after the main menu, your Evrima or Legacy branch, Windows version, GPU model and driver version, whether Steam reacquired files, and any EAC error name or driver filename. Keep crash or log files only if the official support channel requests them.

Use Steam’s technical-support route or the support contact listed for the game, [email protected]. Avoid sending passwords or other sensitive information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is The Isle’s server list empty?

Check that Steam is using the current Evrima branch, remove restrictive filters, finish pending updates, restart Steam, and check firewall or Easy Anti-Cheat access. An empty list can also be temporary or server-side; it does not automatically mean the game installation is corrupted.

Does reinstalling The Isle reset its settings?

Not necessarily. Local Unreal Engine settings can remain under %localappdata%TheIsleSavedConfig. Rename that Config folder to generate fresh settings.

Should I use the -dx11 launch option?

Only as a diagnostic test when the error points to DirectX 12 or GPU initialization. It is not guaranteed to fix crashes and may limit newer rendering features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with a complete restart and Steam file verification. Then repair EAC, confirm Evrima, reset the Config folder, update drivers, test without overlays, and investigate hardware or server conditions. Reinstall only when those lower-risk steps point to leftover or damaged local files.
