Far Cry 4: Valley of the Yetis is worth considering if you want a colder, more survival-focused change of pace from the base game. Its frozen Himalayan setting, scavenging, camp upgrades and recurring night defenses give the expansion a clear identity; the trade-off is a loop some players have found repetitive. It is DLC, not a standalone game, and Steam explicitly requires Far Cry 4.
What is Valley of the Yetis?
Ubisoft’s premise strands the player after a helicopter crash on a Himalayan ridge. The expansion centers on exploring the frozen landscape for tools, improving a camp and defending it from a dangerous cult after nightfall. Ubisoft describes missions for both single-player and co-op action. Ubisoft’s product page presents that survival-and-defense loop as the core of the add-on.
That focus makes this more than a new setting alone: the appeal depends on whether gathering what you need and preparing for repeated attacks sounds satisfying. It is a distinct premise within Far Cry 4, but it also puts repetition at the center of the experience.
What do the reviews say?
Steam user reviews
Steam displayed a “Mostly Positive” rating, with 75% positive from 602 user reviews when accessed in 2026. This is a changing user-review snapshot, not a critic score or a permanent rating. Steam’s listing also notes that the DLC requires the base game.

Critic and player reactions
The available Metacritic excerpts show critics praising the expansion as a strong post-release offering and welcoming its fresh gameplay. The surfaced user excerpts are less uniformly enthusiastic: at least one objects that the survival concept grows repetitive. Those snippets indicate both the appeal and the main caveat, but they do not establish a complete critical consensus or a reliable aggregate score. Metacritic’s critic reviews and its review page provide the cited review context.
Should you buy or skip it?
It may suit you if…
- You want a frozen Himalayan setting and a survival-oriented variation on Far Cry 4.
- Scavenging for tools, upgrading a base and preparing for night attacks sound enjoyable to you.
- You have someone to play with: Ubisoft describes the missions as supporting co-op as well as solo play.
Consider skipping it if…
- You dislike repeating a preparation-and-defense cycle; repetition is a specific concern raised in surfaced user-review excerpts.
- You are looking for a standalone game. This is an expansion, and Steam lists Far Cry 4 as a prerequisite.
- You need a confirmed current price, runtime estimate or platform-wide availability comparison. The cited listings do not establish those details.
In practical terms, it is a better fit for players drawn to its survival loop than for anyone buying it solely on the expectation of a broadly different kind of Far Cry campaign. The favorable Steam snapshot is encouraging, but it does not erase the concern about repetition.

Platforms, ownership and release-date caveats
Ubisoft’s US store identifies the product as PC digital content and says a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect are required. Steam separately states that the DLC requires the base game. These dates should be attributed to their respective listings rather than treated as one universal release date: PlayStation Blog announcement.
