Far Cry 6’s cutscene black bars, frame drops and audio issues may have different causes, so treat them as separate symptoms rather than assuming one graphics problem explains all three. First clarify what “black bar overlay” means: bars above and below a cinematic, a black layer covering part of the picture, or a completely black screen. Ubisoft’s published material does not establish a universal fix for that symptom bundle—or say whether cutscene-only bars are intended.
Start by separating the symptoms
Before changing settings, note the details that distinguish a presentation choice from a fault and a performance problem from an audio one.

- Platform and launch route: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series; on PC, note whether you launch through Steam or Ubisoft Connect.
- Display: monitor or TV resolution and aspect ratio; whether the bars appear only in cutscenes or also in gameplay, menus, or a desktop capture.
- Performance: whether the issue is consistently low frame rate, intermittent stutter, or a drop that begins during or after a cutscene and continues afterward.
- Audio: whether Far Cry 6 fails to launch, has no output after launching, loses dialogue or effects, sounds distorted, or simply has an unsatisfactory mix.
- PC setup, if applicable: GPU (and whether the game uses the dedicated GPU), RAM and VRAM, Windows version, drive type, and where the game and launchers are installed.
These distinctions matter: Ubisoft’s documented black-screen fixes concern launch or a specific co-op DLC scenario, while its audio-device fix concerns a launch failure. None establishes a fix for cutscene bars, post-cutscene frame drops, or in-game audio dropouts.
What do the black bars mean?
Bars only during cinematic scenes
If bars appear above and below the image only during cutscenes, record the display’s native resolution and aspect ratio and compare what you see with gameplay. Ubisoft lists widescreen support for the PC version, but its published material does not say whether cutscene-only bars are intended letterboxing, a game limitation, or a fault in a particular setup. There is no documented official setting here that removes them.

Far Cry 6 cannot be paused during cutscenes, according to Ubisoft’s support index. That describes scene behavior; it does not explain why bars appear.
A black layer, stretched interface, or full black screen
Describe exactly which of these occurs. A black layer over the picture is not the same report as cinematic letterboxing, and neither is the same as a full black screen at launch. Also check whether the problem appears in a screenshot or capture, since that can help establish whether it is visible in the game output or only on the display.
Ubisoft’s October 7, 2021 launch notes say the Far Cry team “Fixed an issue that could cause the UI to be stretched when using ultra-wide display resolutions.” That historical fix concerns stretched UI, not cutscene black bars. Ubisoft’s Title Update 4 notes also record an Xbox black-screen-at-launch fix under certain circumstances; that is not a cutscene fix. Do not treat either note as proof that a current, different symptom has already been addressed.

How to investigate frame drops or stuttering on PC
Check performance against your target
Ubisoft’s Store listing shows baseline PC requirements of 8 GB dual-channel RAM and 4 GB VRAM. Its recommended configuration for 1080p at 60 FPS on the High preset lists 16 GB RAM and 8 GB VRAM. These are published requirements and a recommended target, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate on every system. Compare your hardware, resolution and settings with the target you want to achieve.

That comparison can help describe the issue, but it does not by itself identify a cause.
Follow Ubisoft’s general PC troubleshooting sequence
A Ubisoft support representative’s developer-authored pinned post gives this order for PC performance issues such as stuttering or crashes. It is general troubleshooting, not a sequence verified specifically for frame drops after cutscenes. Make one change at a time and note whether it changes the symptom.

- Use Ubisoft’s general PC troubleshooting guide.
- Clear the Ubisoft Connect cache.
- If you use Steam, clear the Steam cache as well.
- Check that Far Cry 6 is using the dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics.
- If you use Windows 11, try Windows compatibility mode.
- Run an SFC scan.
- If the game is on a hard drive and your PC supports a compatible SSD, consider installing it on an SSD. Ubisoft recommends SSD storage; the support post also says to keep the game on the same drive as Ubisoft Connect and Steam. Neither source promises that this will fix frame drops.
If the problem persists, Ubisoft’s post asks players contacting support to include a detailed description, the steps already tried, PC specifications and Windows version.

First establish whether the game launches. Ubisoft’s March 22, 2022 Title Update 5 notes say the update fixed a PC launch issue when sound devices were disabled or absent from the operating system. That narrow, historical fix concerns failure to launch; it does not establish a repair for missing, distorted or unbalanced audio after the game starts.

If the game launches, Ubisoft’s support index documents controls in the Audio menu for dialogue, sound effects, music and radio levels. It also documents subtitle customization, including a fully black or semi-transparent background, and an option to show subtitles for sounds as closed captions. These options can help adjust the mix or make dialogue and sound cues easier to follow; they are not documented technical fixes for audio that drops out or distorts.

When describing a technical audio issue, say which elements are affected—dialogue, effects, music, radio, or all output—and whether it happens throughout play, only in a particular scene, or after a cutscene. Also include your platform and, on PC, whether the operating system shows an enabled sound device.
What the official patch notes do—and do not—confirm
Patch notes are useful only when the documented scenario matches the symptom. Ubisoft’s October 7, 2021 launch notes include subtitle improvements and fixes and improvements for weapon, vehicle and amigo sound effects, as well as the ultrawide UI fix. Those entries do not confirm a universal cutscene-bar or audio-dropout fix.
Ubisoft’s March 22, 2022 Title Update 5 notes describe the PC launch issue involving disabled or absent sound devices. They also say a black screen affecting PS4 and PS5 co-op players when first launching the Joseph: Collapse DLC was fixed. Those are specific historical cases, not evidence that every current black screen or audio problem has the same cause. The Title Update 4 Xbox black-screen fix is similarly limited to launch behavior under certain circumstances.
