What makes progression different in Far Cry New Dawn?
Far Cry New Dawn ties combat readiness to equipment and enemy ranks, while Prosperity upgrades open access to stronger crafting. Outposts and Expeditions give you ways to take on challenges and keep progressing beyond ordinary exploration. Ubisoft describes Prosperity as central to the game’s progression and Expeditions as missions outside Hope County: Ubisoft’s game overview.

That means a difficult fight is not always solved by aiming better or choosing stealth. Your weapon rank, the enemy’s rank, and the takedown perks you have unlocked can all affect whether an approach works.
How do I deal with higher-rank enemies?
Before committing to a difficult outpost or Expedition, compare its challenge with the ranks of the weapons you plan to bring. Xbox Wire cautions that attempting higher-ranked activities with under-ranked equipment can be punishing; high-rank enemies may also withstand weapons that work well on weaker opponents. See Xbox Wire’s beginner guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Fight to survive in a post-apocalyptic world as you take up arms to fight alongside a friend in online co op
- Lead the fight against the highwaymen and their ruthless leaders, the Twins
- Liberate outposts and build up your home base as you recruit specialists to upgrade and unlock all new features
- Embark on expeditions to recover exclusive rewards as you venture beyond Hope County
- Upgrade to the Deluxe Edition to receive additional weapons, outfits, and vehicles
- If your weapons are under-ranked: work on Prosperity and crafting before forcing the encounter.
- If you want to use stealth: scout and tag threats, disable alarms when practical, and check that your takedown perks match the enemy rank.
- If stealth is not viable: bring a loadout suited to the challenge rather than relying on a weapon that is effective only against weaker enemies.
Stealth takedowns have rank requirements. Xbox Wire identifies Advanced, Expert, and Master Takedown perks as requirements for higher-rank takedowns. A stealth approach is not a guarantee that every enemy can be removed quietly.
What should I upgrade first?
Invest in Prosperity as you gather the resources to do so. Ubisoft says the workbench must be upgraded to craft better weapons. Raw materials are used for crafting, while ethanol earned from outposts helps upgrade facilities and services. Recruiting Specialists also helps unlock upgrades to craftable items, vehicles, health, and other services. The game’s progression overview is available from Ubisoft.
Rank #2
- Fight for survival in a breath-taking post-apocalyptic world
- Unforgettable characters collide with a relentless double threat
- Grow your community and upgrade your Homebase to improve your facilities and unlock more powerful weapons and gear Engage the Highwaymen in Turf Wars by clearing their outposts and then scavenging them for Ethanol and other materials
- Collect raw materials while exploring. They are needed to craft weapons and other items.
- Capture outposts for ethanol. Use it to improve Prosperity’s facilities and services.
- Upgrade the workbench as you can. It gates access to better weapons, helping you meet higher-ranked challenges.
- Recruit Specialists. Their recruitment contributes to unlocking broader Prosperity upgrades.
The useful choice is not simply “craft now” or “save everything.” If your current equipment is below the rank of a challenge you want to tackle, improving your crafting access is a practical priority. Continue scavenging materials along the way rather than treating exploration as separate from progression.
Which perks are useful early?
There is no single perk order that suits every player. GameSpot highlights the third weapon slot and lock-picking as useful early options: one expands the weapons you can carry into combat, while the other helps open locks and safes. Game Informer notes that safes can contain titanium. See GameSpot’s beginner tips and Game Informer’s tips.

| Perk choice | What it helps with | Consider it if… |
|---|---|---|
| Third weapon slot | Carry another weapon and broaden your combat options. | You often want different tools available for varied encounters. |
| Lock-picking | Open locks and safes without relying on another method. | You explore thoroughly and want access to containers that may hold useful resources. |
Opening a safe without lock-picking can mean backtracking or using explosives, so weigh that inconvenience against the value you place on another perk. For stealth-focused play, remember that higher-rank takedowns require their corresponding takedown perks; choosing stealth does not remove the need to match your abilities to enemy rank.

Use ally intel and activities that lead you to rewards rather than spending every point without a plan. GameSpot recommends taking ally intel when you encounter it: it can reveal treasure hunts, which award perk points. The same guide notes that Timber can help spot crafting materials you might otherwise overlook.

- Take ally intel when available to help locate treasure hunts.
- Complete treasure hunts for their perk-point rewards.

Should I scavenge an outpost after capturing it?
Scavenging is an optional escalation, not a required next step. After you capture an outpost, scavenging returns it to Highwaymen control. The next capture is tougher but offers a larger reward, according to Ubisoft’s description of the game’s mechanics.
| Choice | What happens | Good fit when… |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the captured outpost | Avoid resetting the site for another, harder fight. | You want a steadier progression step or are not ready for a tougher defense. |
| Scavenge it | The Highwaymen retake the outpost; recapturing it is harder and gives a larger reward. | Your gear and skills are ready for a repeat challenge. |
Capture it once and move on if you want a safer route forward. Scavenge only when the higher difficulty is a worthwhile trade for the larger reward.
When should I try Expeditions?
Expeditions take you beyond Hope County and complement activities on the main map. Choose them by looking at the challenge rank and whether your current equipment is ready, just as you would before an outpost. There is no established rule that Expeditions are always better or worse for progression than outposts; they are different activities in the game’s progression loop.
Quick Recap
- Try an Expedition when its rank looks manageable for your loadout.
- Build up Prosperity and improve weapons first if the challenge is above your current readiness.
- Balance Expeditions with outposts and exploration instead of treating one activity as mandatory.
