Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is worth playing if you want a more approachable, modern survival-horror game and are open to changes in how the original played. It remains centered on photographing wraiths with the Camera Obscura, but new combat tools and quality-of-life features reshape its rhythm. TechRadar’s PC review found it atmospheric and easier to manage, while warning that some changes may frustrate series purists.
What is Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake?
Released March 12, 2026, this is a full remake of the second FATAL FRAME (also known as PROJECT ZERO) game, originally released for PlayStation 2 in 2003. Twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura become trapped in the abandoned, cursed Minakami Village, where wraiths haunt the darkness. Their main defense is the Camera Obscura, a camera that can capture and contain the supernatural.
Koei Tecmo says it remade the graphics, sound, gameplay systems, and controls. That makes this a reworking of the game rather than a remaster focused on preserving the original presentation. Koei Tecmo’s product page describes the game and its features; series director Makoto Shibata also discussed the remake ahead of release on PlayStation.Blog.
What changed in the remake?
The Camera Obscura has more functions
The camera remains central to both exploration and combat, but the remake adds focus, zoom, filters, and Special Shots. These features expand how players use the device; the publisher’s feature list does not, by itself, establish how well each addition works in play. The camera’s core role—photographing wraiths—is still the game’s defining idea.

New ways to manage danger and progression
Mio can hold Mayu’s hand, a new mechanic meant to emphasize their bond. Koei Tecmo says doing so restores health and spirit power. Players can also collect and equip charms, and photograph Twin Dolls to purify them in exchange for points.
Additional places and story content
The remake introduces locations including Umbral Mound and Eikado Temple’s candlelit hall, along with side stories and a new ending. The new ending features “Utsushie,” composed by Tsuki Amano. These additions give returning players more than a visual update, though the available independent review evidence does not assess every new story element separately. Koei Tecmo Europe’s launch announcement lists the new content and systems.
How does it play, and is it still scary?
In his review of the PC version, published March 16, 2026, TechRadar’s Dashiell Wood praised the detailed, atmospheric environments and said a new dodge makes encounters more predictable. As Wood put it: “The dodge gives you a very reliable way to get out of harm’s way, making your survival more predictable and consistent.”
That predictability is a meaningful trade-off for a horror game built around vulnerable, close-range camera combat. A dodge and expanded camera options can make encounters more manageable, but they also change the pressure and timing that returning players may associate with the original. Wood considered some alterations less successful and warned that purists may dislike both the changed combat and the greater hand-holding. Those are his impressions of the PC version, not a cross-platform technical assessment.

Who should play it?
- Play it if: you want a full remake with refreshed presentation, expanded camera functions, new content, and combat that a reviewer found more approachable.
- Be cautious if: preserving the original’s combat feel and minimal guidance matters more to you than modernization. The changes are substantial enough that familiarity with the 2003 game may not translate into the same experience.
- On PC: Wood criticized the keyboard support and recommended a controller. His review reflects the PC version and his own setup, so it should not be treated as a verdict on console controls or performance.
Platforms, editions, and demo
The game launched for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC via Steam. Koei Tecmo lists Japanese and English voiceovers, with Japanese, English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish text. Its US product page lists physical standard editions for PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S; it describes the Switch 2 release as a game-key card and the Steam version as digital only.
