faus3270.dll is a legacy 32-bit RealNetworks file associated with RealOne Player, not a normal Windows component. If Windows says faus3270.dll is missing or could not be loaded, repair or remove the RealOne installation that requested it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
The file is identified as the ATH Library and is associated with RealOne Player (32-bit), an older media application from RealNetworks. Public file records also refer to it as ATH.DLL, but the filename alone does not prove which copy was installed on a particular computer.

faus3270.dll is not known to be part of:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
- DirectX
- .NET
- A graphics driver
- A normal game installation
It should normally be beside the RealOne Player executable or inside another RealNetworks application directory. There is no good reason to copy it into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the Windows directory.
RealOne Player is discontinued legacy software. RealNetworks states that older RealOne Player releases no longer receive updates or security patches. A current RealPlayer installer may not contain this exact old component, so reinstalling the current product is not guaranteed to recreate the original file.

Causes by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears when opening RealOne Player | Damaged or incomplete RealOne installation | Repair or reinstall the application |
| Error appears immediately after signing in | Stale startup item, shortcut, or scheduled task | Identify and remove the obsolete startup entry |
| Error began after antivirus activity | File was quarantined or removed | Review Protection History before restoring anything |
| “Specified module could not be found” | The DLL or one of its dependencies is absent | Reinstall the owning application |
| “Not a valid Windows image” | Wrong architecture, corruption, or incompatible DLL | Remove the replacement and reinstall the correct application |
| Error appears after disk cleanup | Application files were deleted or an uninstall was incomplete | Uninstall the remaining RealNetworks entry, then restart |
| Several unrelated programs fail | Broader Windows corruption is possible | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Error remains after reinstalling RealPlayer | The wrong program is requesting the file, or a dependency is missing | Identify the exact requesting executable |
The exact program cannot be determined from faus3270.dll alone. Old RealNetworks products could install files in different folders, and a stale startup entry can continue requesting a file after the main application has been removed.
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting faus3270.dll
Before changing Windows system files, find out which executable displays the error.
If the error appears in a window
Read the title bar and the first line of the message. Look for the application name rather than focusing only on the DLL filename.
Then check these locations:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for RealOne, RealPlayer, or another RealNetworks entry.
- Select the entry and note whether it is still installed.
Also check the older Programs and Features list:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Look for RealOne Player, RealPlayer, or Real Player Enterprise.
If the error appears during startup rather than when launching a media application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Startup.
- Turn off only a startup entry clearly associated with the obsolete RealNetworks program.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable the same clearly identified entry if it remains listed.
Do not remove an entry merely because its name is unfamiliar. If necessary, right-click it in Task Manager, select Open file location, and inspect the executable’s publisher and folder.
Check scheduled tasks
A stale scheduled task can trigger the error even after the application has been removed.
- Press the Windows key.
- Type Task Scheduler.
- Open it.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks whose names or actions clearly reference RealOne or RealNetworks.
- Double-click a task and inspect the Actions tab.
- If it points to a deleted RealNetworks executable, right-click the task and select Delete.
Do not delete unrelated tasks or make broad registry changes. Removing the wrong startup item can create a second problem without repairing the original one.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the RealNetworks application
This is the most likely solution when the message appears while opening RealOne Player or another old RealNetworks component.
Try the Windows repair option
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the RealNetworks application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
Not every older desktop application provides a Repair button. If Repair is unavailable or does not change the error, continue with a clean reinstall.
Reinstall the application
- Close the error message and any RealNetworks programs.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the RealNetworks application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Install only from an original, trustworthy RealNetworks installer or the vendor’s current official product source.
- Restart again after installation.
- Launch the application from its new shortcut.
If the original RealOne Player is no longer available or compatible with your Windows version, do not force the installation by copying a DLL from another computer. Consider removing the legacy application and using a supported media player instead.
How to tell whether it worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The application opens without the
faus3270.dllmessage. - The shortcut points to an existing executable.
- The application directory contains its own supporting files.
- The error does not return after restarting Windows.
If a different DLL is reported after reinstalling, that usually means the installation is incomplete or the program has additional missing dependencies. Replacing each DLL individually is not a reliable repair. Remove the damaged installation and reinstall it as a complete package.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software may have removed an old DLL because it was damaged, modified, or considered suspicious. A missing-file message does not prove that the quarantined file was safe.
Review Microsoft Defender Protection History
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any entry that mentions
faus3270.dllor the RealNetworks installation. - Read the detection name and file path.
If the file came from an old RealOne installation, the safer approach is to reinstall the application from a trustworthy original installer rather than restore the isolated DLL.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of these are true:
- You recognize the original application.
- The file was inside that application’s legitimate installation directory.
- The installer and source are trustworthy.
- Your security software’s detection details do not indicate malware.
- You have confirmed that the file was not downloaded from a random DLL repository.
Never disable antivirus protection globally to make the error disappear. If the same file is detected again after reinstalling, leave it quarantined and perform a full scan.
Fix 4: Check for a stale startup reference
If RealOne Player is no longer installed and the error appears at sign-in, Windows may still be trying to launch an old command.
Check the following locations:
- Settings → Apps → Startup
- Task Manager → Startup apps
- The Startup folder opened with
shell:startup - The Startup folder for all users opened with
shell:common startup - Task Scheduler
To inspect the startup folders:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
shell:startup. - Press Enter.
- Remove only a shortcut that clearly points to the deleted RealNetworks program.
- Repeat with
shell:common startup.
If the error is caused by a shortcut, delete the shortcut rather than the executable or an unrelated system file. Restart Windows and check whether the message has gone.
A stale registry entry may also be responsible, but do not delete registry values without first identifying the exact command and publisher. If you cannot identify the entry confidently, leave it alone and remove the obsolete application through its normal uninstaller.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
faus3270.dll is associated with a 32-bit RealOne Player application. A 32-bit application needs its compatible 32-bit supporting files. A 64-bit program cannot generally use an arbitrary 32-bit DLL as a substitute.
On 64-bit Windows, older 32-bit applications are often installed under:
C:Program Files (x86)
A 32-bit DLL found in an application folder does not belong in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
The names of those folders can be confusing: System32 is used by 64-bit Windows system components, while SysWOW64 contains redirected 32-bit system components. Neither folder is a general-purpose storage location for third-party application DLLs.
If the message says “not a valid Windows image” or “not designed to run on Windows”, possible causes include:

Fix 6: Understand “specified module could not be found”
Windows may display:
The specified module could not be found.
That can mean faus3270.dll itself is absent, but it can also mean a dependency required by that DLL is absent. Windows loads libraries according to a defined search order, starting with locations such as the application directory. Copying the named DLL into a system folder can therefore hide the real problem and introduce unsafe search-order behavior.
If reinstalling RealOne Player does not help:
- Uninstall the RealNetworks application.
- Restart Windows.
- Install it again from a trustworthy original source.
- Launch it from its installed shortcut.
- Check whether the error names a different missing file.
If the application is obsolete and no compatible installer is available, the practical fix may be to uninstall it and remove the stale shortcut or startup entry.
Fix 7: Run DISM and System File Checker only for broader Windows problems
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party RealOne Player DLL, so they are not the first fix for an isolated faus3270.dll error.
Use them when several Windows features or unrelated applications are failing, or when Windows itself is unstable.
Run DISM
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
Run SFC
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test the affected application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, restart and run the commands again only if Windows problems continue. Do not expect this process to recreate a missing RealOne file.
Repeatedly running repair commands without identifying what changed can waste time. If you want help locating broader component damage instead of manually comparing Windows files, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; repairs are handled by the full version, and reinstalling the RealNetworks application remains the definitive fix for this specific DLL.

Fix 8: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics, audio, or chipset driver is not the known owner of faus3270.dll. Do not install a driver merely because a DLL error appeared after a Windows update.
Consider drivers only if you also have device failures, display problems, audio problems, or crashes in multiple applications.
To check a driver:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Storage controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver only when a compatible driver is available from the device or computer manufacturer.
If Device Manager shows a warning icon, uninstalling and reinstalling that device’s official driver may be appropriate. Do not replace faus3270.dll as though it were a driver file.
When several devices have outdated drivers and manually hunting each manufacturer’s package is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; installation of drivers is handled by the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling RealOne Player when that application is the requester.

Random DLL download sites create several risks:
- The file may contain malware.
- It may come from a different RealNetworks release.
- It may be the wrong architecture.
- It may have been modified.
- It may lack the dependencies your application needs.
- Copying it into a system folder can create DLL search-order problems.
- The error may actually be caused by a stale startup entry or another missing library.
There is no evidence that faus3270.dll is a Windows system file. Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64, and do not replace it with a file found on another computer.
Use the original application installer or a current official RealNetworks product source instead. Remember that a current RealPlayer installer is not proven to contain the exact legacy faus3270.dll file.
Does regsvr32 fix this DLL?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly ActiveX or COM components. There is no verified evidence that faus3270.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX library.
Running this command:
regsvr32 faus3270.dll
will commonly produce an entry-point error or accomplish nothing useful. A normal application support DLL is loaded by its owning program; it is not repaired by registering it system-wide.

If the error still appears after reinstalling
Work through these checks:
- Confirm which executable displays the error.
- Check whether more than one RealNetworks product remains installed.
- Search the installed application folders for old RealOne shortcuts.
- Check startup entries and scheduled tasks again.
- Confirm that the application is 32-bit and that you installed a compatible release.
- Review antivirus Protection History.
- Check whether the message names a dependent DLL instead.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan if the file is in an unexpected folder or repeatedly detected.
- Consider System Restore if the problem began immediately after removing the application or running disk cleanup.
System Restore can return applications and system settings to an earlier restore point, but it also reverses other changes made since that point. Use it only when you understand what will be rolled back.
FAQ
Is faus3270.dll legitimate?
It is publicly associated with RealOne Player and RealNetworks, but a filename alone does not prove that every copy is genuine. Location, publisher information, installation history, and antivirus results matter.
Is faus3270.dll part of Windows?
No evidence shows that it is a Windows component. Do not place it in a Windows system directory.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which program installed it?
The known association is the legacy 32-bit RealOne Player from RealNetworks. The exact requesting program still needs to be confirmed from the error window, shortcut, startup entry, or executable path.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no reliable evidence connecting this file specifically to those runtimes. Do not install unrelated runtime packages as a first response.
Does sfc /scannow restore it?
Normally, no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not ordinary third-party RealOne Player files.
What if antivirus quarantined it?
Review Protection History and the detection details. Prefer reinstalling the owning application from a trustworthy source instead of restoring an isolated DLL.

Why did the error start after cleanup?
Disk cleanup, antivirus action, partial uninstall, or moving the application can remove a file while leaving its shortcut or startup command behind. That does not automatically indicate Windows corruption.
Can I copy the file from another PC?
No. The other computer may have a different release, architecture, dependency set, or compromised file. Reinstall the complete application instead.
