The 60-second answer
igfxres.dll is a legacy Intel graphics component associated with Intel(R) Common User Interface, not a normal Windows runtime such as Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. The safest fix is to reinstall the correct Intel graphics driver, preferably from your computer manufacturer if you use a laptop or branded desktop.

Do not download an isolated copy of igfxres.dll and place it in System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. A random DLL can have the wrong driver generation, architecture, or malicious modifications, while leaving the damaged Intel installation unresolved.

What igfxres.dll is
The file belongs to Intel graphics software. Its product metadata identifies Intel(R) Common User Interface, with Intel Corporation as the publisher. It is a support or resource module used by certain legacy Intel graphics-driver packages.
That means igfxres.dll is generally not supplied by Windows independently. It may have been installed alongside an Intel integrated graphics driver and historically appeared in locations such as:
C:WindowsSystem32igfxres.dll
Older Intel packages could also place related files under Intel-specific installation folders. The path alone does not prove that a copy is genuine. Third-party drivers commonly install files in System32, so you must also check the publisher and digital signature.
The commonly documented historical copies are 32-bit files, including version examples such as 7.14.10.1295 and 6.14.10.4785. These are historical package records, not universal versions or current recommendations. A current driver package may use a different version, architecture, or even no longer contain this exact legacy filename.
Why the error appears
The message normally means that an application or Windows startup entry tried to load the Intel graphics component and Windows could not load a suitable copy.
Common triggers include:
- An Intel graphics-driver update was interrupted.
- A driver was rolled back or partially removed.
- An old driver-cleaning utility deleted a required component.
- An OEM driver was replaced with an incompatible generic package.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- Windows or the disk contains damaged system components.
- Malware removal deleted or altered a file.
- An old system image restored an incomplete driver installation.
- A legacy application still expects an older Intel graphics package.
A “bad image” message can also indicate a mismatch. For example, a 32-bit DLL loaded by the wrong program or a DLL from a different Intel driver generation may fail even though the filename is correct.
Check the file before repairing it
These checks help distinguish a missing driver component from an unsafe or mismatched DLL.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the path
If a copy exists, right-click the error’s file path or locate the file in File Explorer. A historical location such as C:WindowsSystem32 is plausible, but an identical filename in a temporary folder, Downloads folder, user-writable application folder, or an unfamiliar startup directory deserves investigation.
Do not move the file simply because its name matches the error.
Check the digital signature
- Right-click
igfxres.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and identifies Intel Corporation or the expected driver publisher.
If there is no signature, the signature is invalid, or the publisher is unrelated, do not restore that copy. Run a Windows Security scan and reinstall the graphics driver from a trusted source instead.
Check Device Manager
- Press Win + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Look for the Intel graphics adapter.
- Double-click it and open the Driver tab.
- Record the Driver Provider, Driver Date, and Driver Version.
If the Intel adapter has a warning icon, open its Properties and read the device status and error code. That information can confirm that the DLL problem is part of a broader driver failure.
Fix 1: Reinstall the correct Intel graphics driver
This is the most likely fix because igfxres.dll is a graphics-driver component rather than a Windows runtime.
Start with the computer manufacturer
For a laptop, all-in-one, or branded desktop:
- Find the exact computer model from its label, support application, BIOS information, or Settings → System → About.
- Open the manufacturer’s official support page on another trusted device if necessary.
- Search for the model’s Windows 10 or Windows 11 graphics driver.
- Match the driver to the installed Windows edition and system architecture.
- Download the display or Intel graphics package.
- Close running applications.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Restart Windows even if the installer does not require it.
- Return to Device Manager → Display adapters → Intel graphics device → Driver.
- Confirm that the driver provider and version changed to the installed package.
The OEM package is preferred because laptop manufacturers may customize power management, display switching, hotkeys, firmware interaction, and graphics behavior. A generic Intel package can overwrite those customizations or fail compatibility checks.

Use Intel’s official package when appropriate
If the computer manufacturer does not provide a suitable package, use Intel’s official Driver & Support Assistant or Download Center. Identify the processor or graphics adapter first, then select the matching driver rather than downloading a package based only on the DLL filename.
Do not select a driver because it contains a similarly named file. The correct package must match the graphics adapter, Windows version, system architecture, and, where relevant, the OEM configuration.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through driver versions and checking which devices are stale; its free scan shows what it identifies, while the repair or driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the manufacturer’s graphics package remains the definitive fix when this file belongs to a specific OEM installation.
If the installation fails
Try these steps in order:
- Restart Windows and run the installer again as administrator.
- Temporarily close other hardware-management utilities.
- Disconnect unnecessary external displays or docks.
- In Device Manager, right-click the Intel adapter and choose Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver software.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the downloaded OEM graphics installer.
- Restart again and check Device Manager.
Use driver removal carefully. If the screen falls back to Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, that is expected until the Intel package is installed. Do not delete random DLLs or driver folders manually.
Fix 2: Roll back a recent graphics-driver update
If the error began directly after a driver update, rollback is more appropriate than installing a random DLL.
- Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Double-click the Intel graphics device.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver.
- Choose a reason if Windows asks.
- Select Yes.
- Restart the computer.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, Windows may not have retained the previous package. Install the computer manufacturer’s recommended driver instead.
Recommended Free Tools
A rollback is useful when the new package is incompatible, but it does not repair files removed by antivirus or disk corruption. If the error remains, perform a clean reinstall using the correct OEM package.
Fix 3: Review Windows Security Protection history
Antivirus quarantine is a plausible cause, especially if the error appeared immediately after a security scan.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
igfxres.dll. - Open the detection and record the original path, detection name, and action taken.
- Compare the original path with the expected Intel driver location.
- Check the file’s digital signature if a copy remains.
- Restore it only when the file is demonstrably authentic and the detection is a false positive.
- If Windows Security offers Allow on device, use that only after confirming the file and source.
Restoring an unverified DLL is unsafe. If the detection involves an unusual folder or an invalid signature, leave it quarantined and reinstall the graphics driver from the OEM or official Intel source.
After reinstalling, run a full Windows Security scan. If the same file is quarantined again, stop restoring it and investigate the detection as a possible impersonation or malware issue.

DISM and SFC repair Windows itself. They are worthwhile when Windows has damaged components, but they are not a replacement for reinstalling an Intel driver.
- Install pending Windows updates through Settings → Windows Update.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files. It may also report that no integrity violations were found, or that some files could not be repaired.
Because igfxres.dll is normally an Intel driver component rather than a protected Windows operating-system DLL, SFC may not restore it. If the error remains after DISM and SFC complete, reinstall the Intel graphics driver.
The manual process can involve repeating DISM and SFC without knowing which change resolved the problem. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the repair conditions it recognizes and show what needs attention; the repair is performed by the full version, and it is not required when the definitive issue is a missing Intel driver package.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore can help when the file worked previously and the failure followed a driver update, cleanup operation, or other system change.

- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove drivers and applications installed after the selected restore point. If no suitable restore point exists, reinstall the correct graphics driver instead.
Fix 6: Repair one affected application
If Windows starts normally and only one old game or application reports igfxres.dll, determine whether the program is actually loading an Intel driver component or has its own damaged installation.
First, note the path in the error. If it points inside the application’s installation folder, use the application’s official repair or reinstall process. For a launcher-managed game:
- Open the game launcher.
- Open the game’s settings or properties.
- Choose Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files.
- Wait for the check to complete.
- Start the application again.
File verification is relevant only when the DLL belongs to that application. If the error points to C:WindowsSystem32 and the application merely triggers the load, repair the Intel graphics driver instead.
If the application is very old, it may expect a legacy Intel graphics package that a modern driver no longer includes. Do not copy a DLL from another computer. Use the application’s supported compatibility settings or the computer manufacturer’s older approved graphics package where available.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is normally used for certain COM or ActiveX components.
igfxres.dll is an Intel graphics support or resource module, not a DLL that should ordinarily be repaired by registry registration. Running:
regsvr32 igfxres.dll
can produce an error because the file does not expose the required registration entry point. It does not reinstall the driver, replace missing dependencies, correct architecture mismatches, or restore OEM configuration.
Use the driver installer instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET usually do not help
Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX components, and .NET are common dependencies for applications, so they are often suggested for generic DLL errors. They do not normally supply this Intel graphics module.
Installing them may be appropriate when the error names a missing runtime DLL from one of those packages, but it is not an evidence-based repair for igfxres.dll. The relevant package here is the Intel graphics driver.
Likewise, enabling extra items under Windows Features does not normally restore this file. Windows Features can enable components such as legacy application frameworks, but they do not recreate an Intel graphics-driver installation.

Historical metadata commonly identifies igfxres.dll as a 32-bit Win32 file. That does not mean every computer should receive the same copy.
A 32-bit application uses 32-bit dependencies, while a 64-bit application uses 64-bit dependencies. Windows also maintains separate locations for many 32-bit and 64-bit system components. Copying a 32-bit DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory based on an internet instruction can create a new loader error.

The correct architecture is determined by the driver package and the program that loads it. Let the OEM or Intel installer place the files. Do not infer compatibility from the filename or from a version number found on a DLL index.
If the error appears on every boot
A startup entry, scheduled task, or graphics utility may be trying to load the missing component.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Complete the driver reinstall steps above.
- Check Device Manager for warnings under Display adapters.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and look for old Intel graphics utilities.
- Remove only software you recognize and no longer need.
- Open Task Manager → Startup apps and review old graphics-related entries.
- Check Event Viewer for errors around the time of startup.
- Restart and confirm whether the message returns.
Do not disable unknown startup entries solely because their names look technical. If the driver is correctly installed but an obsolete utility still requests the file, uninstall or repair that utility through its official installer.
If the error continues after reinstalling
Check the following:
- The Intel adapter is visible in Device Manager.
- The driver provider and version match the package you installed.
- Device Manager shows no error code.
- The installed package matches the computer model.
- Windows Security has not quarantined the file again.
- The file’s signature is valid.
- The error path is not pointing to an old application folder.
- The disk has no broader corruption symptoms.
- A new Windows user profile shows the same behavior.
If the file is present and signed but still reports “not designed to run on Windows,” the application may be loading the wrong architecture or an incompatible legacy build. Reinstall both the correct driver and the affected application rather than replacing the DLL manually.
FAQ
Is igfxres.dll malware?
The filename belongs to a legitimate Intel graphics component, but the filename alone cannot prove that a particular copy is safe. Check its location, digital signature, publisher, and Protection history. A copy in an unusual writable folder or with an invalid signature should be treated as suspicious.
Does igfxres.dll belong to Windows?
Generally no. It is associated with legacy Intel graphics software installed with a graphics-driver package. Its presence in System32 does not make it a Windows-native runtime.
Should I download igfxres.dll from a DLL website?
No. An isolated download can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, come from another Intel driver generation, or fail to repair the underlying installation. Reinstall the signed OEM or official Intel graphics package.
Will installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
Normally no. Those packages do not normally ship this Intel graphics module. Use the matching Intel graphics-driver installer.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. Even two computers with Intel graphics may use different driver generations, OEM customizations, architectures, or Windows configurations.
Should I run regsvr32 igfxres.dll?
Normally no. This file is not generally repaired through COM registration. Reinstall the graphics driver instead.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can SFC restore the file?
SFC can repair protected Windows files, but igfxres.dll is generally a third-party Intel driver component. SFC may not restore it, so reinstall the graphics driver if the file is still missing.
What if only one old program reports the error?
Check the path in the message. If it points into that program’s folder, repair or reinstall the program and use its launcher’s file verification feature. If it points to System32, repair the Intel graphics installation.
What if a modern Intel driver does not contain igfxres.dll?
Modern packages may no longer use this exact legacy filename. That is not a reason to download it separately. Use the driver intended for the computer model and graphics adapter, then investigate any old application that still expects the file.
