Which fix applies to you
Use this checklist to choose the right path:
- The error appears across Windows, Explorer, printer setup, or network discovery: install Windows updates, then run DISM and SFC.
- Windows Security recently detected or quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The message started after an update or system change: try System Restore.
- The message appears only in one application: repair or reinstall that application after repairing Windows.
- The error says “specified module could not be found” even though the file exists: a dependency or application path may be the real problem.
- The file is in an application folder instead of a Windows system directory: treat it cautiously and verify its signature.
- You are considering downloading the DLL: do not do that. Windows should restore this protected component through its own servicing and recovery tools.
What fdwcn.dll is
fdwcn.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system library named Windows Connect Now – Config Function Discovery Provider DLL. Windows Connect Now helps applications discover and configure network devices, including access points, printers, cameras, and PCs through Function Discovery APIs. Microsoft describes Windows Connect Now here, and its provider architecture is documented here.

It works as part of the wider Windows discovery stack, alongside components such as wcnapi.dll, wcncsvc.dll, fdproxy.dll, and FunDisc.dll. A failure involving fdwcn.dll may therefore appear during wireless configuration, printer setup, network browsing, or another operation that discovers devices.
On a normal installation, check these locations:
%SystemRoot%System32fdwcn.dll
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64fdwcn.dll
System32 contains the native system architecture. On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 is used for 32-bit Windows-on-Windows components. Do not assume that a file copied from one directory belongs in the other. Windows servicing selects the correct architecture and build.

The exact file version varies with your Windows release and servicing level. Microsoft update inventories identify Fdwcn.dll in both x86 and x64 Windows packages, but historical version numbers are not download recommendations.
What the error messages mean
You may see one of these Windows loader messages:
- “The program can’t start because fdwcn.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because fdwcn.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading fdwcn.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “fdwcn.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “fdwcn.dll is corrupted.”
These messages do not prove that the named file is the only problem. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that fdwcn.dll exists but one of its dependencies is missing. A damaged component store, incomplete update, antivirus quarantine, incorrect architecture, malware cleanup, or a bad application path can produce similar symptoms.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates first
Microsoft’s repair sequence begins with Windows Update.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Repeat the check until no further updates are offered.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
Test the operation that produced the error. If the message remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than downloading fdwcn.dll.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If this is a Windows 10 installation, use supported recovery choices where available and plan a move to a supported Windows release.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. System File Checker then uses that repaired store to replace missing or corrupted protected files. Run DISM first.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program or device.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restarting is important. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. Persistent failures may require System Restore or a repair reinstall.
Recommended Free Tools
If you prefer help identifying what changed during repeated manual DISM and SFC runs, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system issues; its free scan shows findings, while repair actions require the full version, and it is not a substitute for Windows servicing when the component itself is damaged.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files because Windows Update is damaged, Microsoft supports using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and build closely enough for servicing. Do not use a random ISO.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a genuine system file after a detection or malware-removal event. Check the record before attempting to restore anything.
- Open Start and select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
fdwcn.dll. - Expand the detection and inspect its path, detection name, and action.
- Verify that the file was located in the expected Windows system directory and that its publisher is Microsoft before considering restoration.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again if it is not a false positive. If the file was found in an unexpected application folder, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. If malware was involved, investigate and remove the infection instead of simply restoring the DLL.

- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
After handling quarantine, run DISM and SFC again. Those tools are the safer way to restore a protected Windows file.
Fix 4: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after an update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the
fdwcn.dllerror began. - Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, drivers, and settings without removing personal documents. It does not replace a malware investigation or repair a damaged Windows installation that has no usable restore point.
Fix 5: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If the error appears only when one application starts, the application may have a bad installation path, a missing private dependency, or an incompatible component. Repair Windows first, then repair the application.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings.
- Otherwise uninstall the program and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
Do not copy fdwcn.dll into the application’s folder. A genuine Windows copy in System32 does not become a valid private application dependency merely because the filename matches.
If the application is old, check whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit and whether it supports your Windows release. A 32-bit application can use Windows compatibility layers, but that does not make it safe to substitute a 32-bit DLL for a 64-bit system component.
Fix 6: Check the file path and signature
A legitimate copy should normally be under a Windows system directory. A copy in a game directory, temporary folder, download folder, or unfamiliar application directory deserves extra scrutiny.
To inspect it:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the reported file location.
- Right-click
fdwcn.dlland select Properties. - Check the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
A valid signature does not make every unexpected copy harmless, and an absent signature is a reason not to restore or execute the file. Use Windows Security for scanning and let DISM/SFC restore the system copy.

Fix 7: Check dependencies and application paths
If fdwcn.dll exists and is correctly signed, the error may concern a dependency rather than the file itself. This is especially likely when Windows says “The specified module could not be found.”
Check the following:
- The error occurs only in one application.
- The application was moved manually to another drive.
- A program was partially uninstalled.
- Windows was upgraded or restored from an image.
- A 32-bit application is being launched with incompatible private files.
- The Windows system directory is missing from the normal search path.
Repair or reinstall the affected application after Windows integrity is restored. Avoid downloading individual dependencies based only on a filename.

Drivers and Device Manager
A network, printer, or wireless driver may cause a separate device-discovery failure, but reinstalling a graphics, chipset, or network driver is not the primary repair for a missing protected fdwcn.dll.
If Device Manager shows a related device error:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters, Printers, or the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the status on the General tab.
- Use Driver to check the provider and date.
- Prefer the computer or device manufacturer’s official driver.
- Restart after installation.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through multiple driver versions by showing driver findings in its free scan; installation and repair features require the full version, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that application is the source.

Do not run:
regsvr32 fdwcn.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose repair command for every .dll file, and there is no Microsoft instruction requiring users to register fdwcn.dll manually. Registration errors can add confusion without restoring the Windows component.
Why DLL download sites are unsafe
Do not download fdwcn.dll from a random DLL archive or copy a file supplied by a forum post. The file may contain malware, target a different Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency or damaged component store.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, Windows repair reinstall, or the official installer for the affected application instead. Windows 11 also supports Settings → System → Recovery → Fix problems using Windows Update → Reinstall now on supported installations. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
Prevention
- Keep Windows serviced and restart after major updates.
- Do not use registry cleaners or DLL repair utilities.
- Leave protected Windows files in their original directories.
- Keep Windows Security active and review Protection history after detections.
- Use official application and hardware installers.
- Create restore points before major system changes.
- Keep application architecture and Windows architecture compatible.
FAQ
Is fdwcn.dll malware?
No. It is a genuine Microsoft Windows component when it is in the expected Windows system directory and carries a valid Microsoft signature. An unexpected copy should be investigated rather than judged by its filename alone.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Is fdwcn.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. It is a Windows Connect Now and Function Discovery component. Reinstalling those runtimes is not the normal fix.
Should I copy the file from System32 to SysWOW64?
No. Those directories serve different architectures. Let Windows servicing restore the correct files.
Will a network-driver reinstall fix the error?
Usually not. Driver repair may help a separate discovery or device problem, but a missing protected DLL should first be handled with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
What if SFC cannot repair fdwcn.dll?
Run DISM again, restart, and rerun SFC. If the problem continues, use System Restore or a supported Windows repair reinstall. If only one application fails, repair or reinstall that application after Windows repair.
