adsklicensingsdk_2.dll is an Autodesk licensing SDK file associated with the Autodesk Vault 2020 SDK. If Windows says adsklicensingsdk_2.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the Autodesk application that requested it rather than copying a random DLL into Windows.

The file is not a Windows component and is not the same thing as Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service. The safest repair depends on whether you are running an installed Vault product or a custom Vault API application.

What adsklicensingsdk_2.dll belongs to

Item Verified information
File adsklicensingsdk_2.dll
Main association Autodesk Vault 2020 SDK
Category Application or SDK file
Windows component No
Normal location The Autodesk SDK or the application’s executable/output folder

Autodesk’s SDK version mapping identifies these files:

  • Vault 2020: AdskLicensingSDK_2.dll
  • Vault 2021: AdskLicensingSDK_3.dll
  • Vault 2022: AdskLicensingSDK_5.dll
  • Vault 2023: AdskLicensingSDK_6.dll

Do not rename a newer SDK file to _2.dll. The application may require a specific binary and matching dependencies.

First, identify the program requesting the DLL

Read the title bar and full text of the error dialog. The requesting program may be:

  • Autodesk Vault or a Vault-related utility
  • A Vault API sample
  • A custom Vault plug-in
  • An internal application built against the Vault SDK
  • A shortcut or scheduled task pointing to an old application folder

If the message appears immediately after launching a shortcut, right-click that shortcut, select Properties, and inspect Target. The executable path often identifies the damaged Autodesk installation.

You can also check Task Manager:

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  2. Select Details.
  3. Look for the process that appears briefly before the error.
  4. Right-click it if it remains visible and choose Open file location.

Knowing which program failed prevents you from repairing an unrelated Autodesk product.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning Autodesk product

For ordinary Autodesk users, this is the most likely solution. A failed update, incomplete installation, moved program folder, or damaged Vault installation can remove the SDK file or leave the application pointing to the wrong location.

Try Autodesk Access first

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Autodesk Access.
  3. Open it and allow it to finish checking installed products.
  4. Find the relevant Vault product.
  5. Open its More menu.
  6. Choose Repair, Update, or Reinstall, depending on what is available.
  7. Restart Windows after the operation completes.
  8. Launch the same application again.

If Autodesk Access does not list the product, sign in to your Autodesk Account and download the matching Vault product or SDK installer from the product support area. Install the same major Vault version that the application expects.

A Vault 2020 application should receive the Vault 2020 SDK files. Installing a different SDK version may leave the original error unchanged or create a new compatibility problem.

How to tell whether this worked

The repair succeeded if the application opens without the missing-DLL dialog and its normal licensing screen or workspace appears. If the error changes to a different missing file, the original DLL may now be present and the next message is identifying a dependency problem.

If the installer fails, uninstall the damaged Vault component from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart, and install it again from the official Autodesk installer. Preserve any project files or custom plug-in folders before removing developer tools.

Fix 2: Restore the DLL for a custom Vault application

If you are a developer or are running a custom Vault API tool, reinstalling the desktop Autodesk application may not fix the deployment. The DLL must be available beside the executable that loads it.

Autodesk’s published example places the Vault 2020 file here:

C:Program FilesAutodeskAutodesk Vault 2020 SDKbinx64AdskLicensingSDK_2.dll

Copy the original file from the matching Autodesk Vault 2020 SDK installation into the application’s actual runtime directory. This is commonly the folder containing the built .exe, not necessarily the project directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Visual Studio project:

  1. Close the application.
  2. Open the Vault 2020 SDK installation folder.
  3. Open binx64.
  4. Confirm that AdskLicensingSDK_2.dll is present.
  5. Copy it into the application’s build or output folder.
  6. In Visual Studio, select the project reference or deployment rule for the SDK.
  7. Set the file to copy to the output directory when the project builds.
  8. Clean and rebuild the project.
  9. Confirm that the DLL exists beside the resulting executable.
  10. Run the application again.

Do not copy it to C:WindowsSystem32. Private application DLLs should remain with the application that uses them. Microsoft documents the Windows loader’s search behavior in its DLL search order guidance.

Check the application architecture

The Autodesk example uses the SDK’s binx64 directory. Make sure the application and DLL architecture match:

  • A 64-bit process needs a compatible 64-bit DLL.
  • A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL.
  • A 64-bit Windows installation can still run 32-bit applications.

In Visual Studio, open Build > Configuration Manager and inspect Platform. Avoid leaving the project on Any CPU when the SDK requires a specific native architecture. Choose the architecture expected by the Vault SDK, rebuild, and test again.

Fix 3: Check whether a dependency is missing

The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that adsklicensingsdk_2.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load one of its dependencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check these possibilities:

  1. Confirm that the DLL exists beside the application executable.
  2. Confirm that the application is using the correct x64 or 32-bit build.
  3. Run the application from its normal shortcut, not from a different copied folder.
  4. Review the new error text carefully.
  5. If it names a Microsoft runtime such as VCRUNTIME*.dll, install the matching package from Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application may require the x86 redistributable. Install the architecture matching the application, not merely the architecture of Windows.

A Visual C++ installation is not a substitute for restoring adsklicensingsdk_2.dll. It helps only when the loader reports a missing Microsoft runtime dependency.

Fix 4: Repair Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service when licensing also fails

Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service is separate from AdskLicensingSDK_2.dll. The service supports Autodesk desktop products from version 2020 onward, while the SDK DLL is an application binary used by Vault-related software.

Repair the service when several Autodesk products fail to launch or you also see licensing-manager errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The documented service folder is:

C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesAutodesk SharedAdskLicensing

To reinstall it:

  1. Close all Autodesk applications.
  2. Open File Explorer.
  3. Browse to the folder above.
  4. Right-click uninstall.exe.
  5. Select Run as administrator.
  6. Follow the removal prompts.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Download the current Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service installer from Autodesk Support.
  9. Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
  10. Restart Windows again.
  11. Test Vault or the affected Autodesk application.

This repair may resolve a licensing-service failure, but it does not replace the matching Vault SDK DLL in a custom application’s output folder.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove or quarantine an application DLL after an update or when a program is restored from backup.

Windows Security

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security.
  3. Choose Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Open Protection history.
  6. Look for an action involving the Autodesk installation or your Vault application.
  7. Do not restore the file unless you can verify that it came from the official Autodesk installation or SDK.
  8. After restoring a verified file, update the security definitions and test the application.

If the file was removed from a custom application folder, rebuild or redeploy the application from the original SDK instead of restoring an unknown copy. Autodesk applications may also fail to open when security software blocks their components.

Fix 6: Update Windows only when the evidence points there

A Windows update is unlikely to recreate a missing Autodesk SDK file. Update Windows when the failure began after a system update or when multiple applications are malfunctioning.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart when prompted.
  6. Test the Autodesk application.

Do not update graphics drivers or unrelated hardware drivers as the first response to this DLL error. Drivers do not normally provide an Autodesk Vault SDK binary.

If the Autodesk application has separate graphics or hardware problems, open Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Choose Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart if Windows installs an update.

Manually checking many devices and matching driver packages can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its full version performs the driver installation. It is optional, and reinstalling the Autodesk product remains the definitive fix for this specific DLL.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components only for broader corruption

Use DISM and SFC when other Windows files or applications are also failing. These commands normally do not restore a third-party Autodesk DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the Autodesk application.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. If both complete successfully but the Autodesk error remains, return to the Vault repair or SDK deployment steps.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the real issue is a missing application file. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and identify repair targets; its full version performs the repair. It is optional, and reinstalling the Autodesk program remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.

What not to do

Do not download a loose DLL

Random DLL download sites may provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a file that does not match the rest of the Vault SDK. A replacement can also hide the actual problem, such as a broken installer or incomplete deployment.

Use only the original file from the matching Autodesk Vault SDK or an official Autodesk product installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64

Those folders are for Windows-managed system components and specific shared libraries. Copying a private Autodesk SDK DLL there can cause version conflicts and does not guarantee that the application will load it.

Do not use regsvr32

regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose the registration entry points used by COM or ActiveX components. It is not a general repair utility. An SDK runtime library normally is not fixed by registering it.

Do not rename another Autodesk DLL

AdskLicensingSDK_3.dll, AdskLicensingSDK_5.dll, and other similarly named files are not interchangeable replacements for _2.dll.

FAQ

Is adsklicensingsdk_2.dll part of Windows?

No. It is an Autodesk application or SDK binary associated with Autodesk Vault 2020.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it the Autodesk Desktop Licensing Service?

No. The similarly named licensing service is a separate Autodesk component. Repair it only when the wider Autodesk installation also shows licensing-service failures.

Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file exists?

A dependency may be missing, the process may have the wrong architecture, or the application may be searching a different folder. Place the matching DLL beside the executable and investigate any new dependency error.

Should I install the Vault 2021 SDK instead?

No. Match the SDK to the application. A Vault 2020 application expects the Vault 2020 SDK files, including AdskLicensingSDK_2.dll.

Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?

Only if the error identifies a missing Microsoft runtime dependency. It will not replace the Autodesk DLL itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I contact Autodesk?

Contact Autodesk or the application developer when the official repair fails, the SDK file is absent from a legitimate installation, or a custom Vault application still fails after the correct DLL and architecture are deployed. Provide the full error text, application version, Windows architecture, and executable path.
