If Windows says fdwnet.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows rather than downloading a loose replacement file.
What fdwnet.dll does
The file is described as Function Discovery WNet Provider Dll. It belongs to Windows’ Function Discovery networking subsystem, whose NetBIOS provider uses WNet functions to enumerate discoverable network devices and resources. Microsoft documents the provider system in its Function Discovery built-in providers documentation.

The exact version depends on the Windows release, architecture, and servicing level. Microsoft’s historical Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 documentation lists separate x86 and x64 versions, which is one reason copying a file from another computer is unreliable.
What the error message means
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because fdwnet.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because fdwnet.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading fdwnet.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “fdwnet.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording gives a useful clue, but not always the complete diagnosis:
- Missing or not found: The file may be absent, or the application may be searching the wrong location.
- Specified module could not be found:
fdwnet.dllmay be missing, but a dependency required by it may also be unavailable. - Not designed to run on Windows: The file may be corrupt, unsigned, built for the wrong architecture, or from another Windows build.
- Only one application reports it: The application installation or its loader path may be damaged even if Windows itself is intact.
Fix fdwnet.dll safely
Work through these steps in order. Restart when a step requests it, then test the original program or Windows function again.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall1. Install Windows updates and restart
A failed update or incomplete servicing operation can expose missing or mismatched system files.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 11, select Check for updates. On Windows 10, select Check for updates under Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
- Check for updates again after the restart.
If the error began immediately after an update, do not download an older DLL to reverse the change. Continue with DISM and SFC below.
2. Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as its source.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program again.
A successful SFC result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If SFC says it found no integrity violations, the problem may involve a dependency, application installation, architecture mismatch, or a file that security software removed.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a genuine Windows repair source matching your installed edition, language, architecture, and a sufficiently compatible build. Do not use an arbitrary folder from another computer.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying issues and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and it is optional rather than required for this fix.
3. Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
If the error appeared after a security scan, check whether Windows Security removed fdwnet.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Windows Security on Windows 11, or Update & Security > Windows Security on Windows 10.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions for a file named
fdwnet.dll. - Open the detection details and check the original path, detection name, and action taken.
Only restore the file if the evidence shows that the original Microsoft file was falsely detected, the original path was a Windows system directory, and the file’s Microsoft signature can be verified. If malware is suspected, leave the item quarantined, run a full scan, and use Microsoft Defender Offline where appropriate.
Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again until it is explicitly allowed. Do not create an exclusion merely to suppress the error. Repair Windows after dealing with the detection so a trusted copy is restored through servicing.
4. Repair the application that reports the error
If Windows itself appears normal and only one application displays the message, repair that application before replacing system files.
For a Microsoft Store or other supported app:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the application’s menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
For traditional desktop software:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer’s instructions.
If repair does not work, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer. For a game, use its launcher’s verify or repair-files option first. Do not place fdwnet.dll in the game folder unless the publisher explicitly supplies that file as part of its own package.

Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET normally will not restore fdwnet.dll. Those packages do not supply this Windows component. Install a runtime only when the error names a file belonging to that runtime as well.
5. Verify the file path, signature, and architecture
If the file exists, confirm that it is the correct Windows copy.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. - If needed, also check
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Right-click
fdwnet.dlland select Properties. - Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid digital signature from Microsoft.
A file in a random download folder, an application directory, or a temporary folder should not be trusted simply because its name matches. A valid-looking filename does not establish the correct build or architecture.
If the file exists but Windows reports that it is invalid, not designed to run on Windows, or missing an entry point, use DISM and SFC rather than copying another version over it.
6. Check network discovery settings
Function Discovery is related to discovering devices and resources on a network. After repairing Windows, confirm that the related services and discovery setting have not been disabled by a cleanup utility or policy.
- Open Settings > Network & internet.
- Open the active network connection.
- Confirm that the network is set appropriately for discovery. Network discovery is generally intended for a trusted private network.
- To change advanced discovery settings, open Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change advanced sharing settings.
- Turn on Network discovery if you need to see devices on the local network.
Windows Features does not provide a separate fdwnet.dll package. Do not use Turn Windows features on or off to search for a DLL replacement.
7. Update or reinstall a related network driver only when symptoms point to it
A network adapter driver does not normally supply fdwnet.dll, so driver replacement is not the first repair. Consider it when the DLL error appeared with a network adapter failure, missing adapter, or a recent driver change.

- Otherwise, select Uninstall device, restart, and install the driver supplied by the computer or adapter manufacturer.
Identifying which of dozens of drivers is stale can take longer than the actual repair. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver problems; its driver installation features require the full version, and it is not necessary when Device Manager and the manufacturer’s driver already resolve the issue.
Recommended Free Tools
Use System Restore for a recent change
If fdwnet.dll worked until a specific update, cleanup operation, driver installation, or software change, System Restore may return system files and settings to an earlier restore point.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs to review potential changes.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore preserves personal files, but it can remove applications, drivers, updates, and settings installed after the selected restore point.
On Windows 11, you may also have a less destructive repair option:
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available.

Do not download fdwnet.dll from a random DLL website
Loose DLL downloads can contain malware, target the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or fail to repair the dependency that caused the error. They can also make later servicing and signature checks more difficult.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component repair, matching official installation media, System Restore, or an official Windows recovery process. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explain the escalation path when normal repair fails.
Do not copy the file from another computer
Even when two PCs run the same major Windows version, their servicing level, architecture, language, and component state may differ. A copied file can cause a new mismatch.

Do not routinely run regsvr32 fdwnet.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that implement the COM DllRegisterServer entry point. There is no Microsoft-supported fdwnet.dll registration procedure, and registration cannot recreate a missing or damaged file. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains when the command applies.
FAQ
Is fdwnet.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a Windows Function Discovery WNet provider. A legitimate copy should normally be in System32 or, for a 32-bit system binary on 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64, and should have a valid Microsoft digital signature.
Is fdwnet.dll safe to delete?
No. Do not delete it manually. If security software identifies it as malicious, follow the security product’s detection guidance and repair Windows afterward.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix fdwnet.dll?
Normally no. fdwnet.dll is a Windows component, not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file.
Why does the message say the specified module was not found when the file exists?
The named DLL may have a missing dependency, be corrupt, have the wrong architecture, or be loaded from an incorrect path. DISM, SFC, signature checking, and application repair are safer than replacing the visible file.
What if SFC says it repaired the file but the error returns?
Check Protection history for repeated quarantine, install pending Windows updates, review recent software or driver changes, and run another full security scan. If repairs continue to fail, use System Restore, Windows 11’s repair reinstall, or official installation media.
What information should I record before asking for further help?
Record the exact error text, Windows edition and build, whether the file exists, its full path, the digital-signature result, the application reporting the error, and any update, cleanup, driver, or antivirus event that occurred immediately beforehand.
