Windows or an application may display one of these messages:

  • “The program can’t start because feclient.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “feclient.dll could not be found.”
  • “Cannot find C:WindowsSystem32feclient.dll.”
  • “Failed to load feclient.dll.”
  • “The file feclient.dll is missing or corrupt.”
  • “feclient.dll cannot be loaded. Module was not found.”
  • “An error occurred applying attributes to the file. The specified module could not be found.”

The exact wording depends on Windows, the program that called the file, and the reason loading failed.

The 60-second answer is that feclient.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component for Encrypting File System, or EFS. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or ordinary game runtime file. Install pending Windows updates, restart, then run DISM followed by System File Checker from an administrator Command Prompt:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source. Use the Microsoft repair instructions if either command reports an error.

Do not download a replacement DLL from a random file archive. A downloaded copy can have the wrong Windows build, architecture, or contents, and it does not repair the underlying component store.

What feclient.dll is

The file’s description is Windows NT File Encryption Client Interfaces. Its company is Microsoft Corporation, and its product is Microsoft Windows Operating System.

Windows uses the file as part of client-side EFS functionality. EFS protects individual files and folders by encrypting them with certificates and keys. Windows EFS-related operations can call interfaces provided by the Feclient component.

Public Windows file metadata commonly places the file at:

%windir%System32feclient.dll

On 64-bit Windows, System32 conventionally contains 64-bit system files. A 32-bit process may instead be redirected to the 32-bit system directory:

%windir%SysWOW64

This naming is counterintuitive, but it is normal Windows behavior. Microsoft explains the rules in its documentation for the File System Redirector.

There is no single correct file size or version for every installation. Windows releases and architectures use build-specific files, so replacing the file with a version found online can create a new compatibility problem.

Why the error appears

1. Windows component corruption or deletion

This is the most likely explanation when the error affects Windows file operations, EFS, or more than one program. An interrupted update, storage problem, cleanup tool, or damaged component store can leave a protected system file unavailable.

DISM and SFC are designed for this situation.

2. Antivirus quarantine

Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined the file. A detection can be a false positive, but a file with the correct name is not automatically safe. Malware can replace a legitimate DLL or place a copy beside an application.

Check the security product’s quarantine history before restoring anything.

3. An incomplete update or servicing failure

A Windows update may have replaced related files incompletely or left the component store in an inconsistent state. Installing current updates and restarting can resolve the problem. DISM is the next step when ordinary updating does not.

4. Architecture mismatch

A 32-bit application cannot load a 64-bit DLL in the same way a 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit system DLL. Windows normally handles its own system-directory redirection, but a manually copied file can bypass the intended servicing path.

This is one reason copying a DLL into an application folder is unsafe.

5. Disk or file-system damage

If SFC repeatedly reports files it cannot repair, the storage device or file system may need attention. This is less common than ordinary component corruption, but it should not be ignored when repairs repeatedly fail.

6. An application has the wrong private dependency

If only one old application reports the error, the application may be loading a private or incorrect copy, or the message may be a misleading symptom of another missing dependency. A legitimate Windows system DLL should normally be restored by Windows, not copied beside the application executable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 1: Update Windows and restart

Start with Windows Update because a pending servicing operation can prevent Windows from restoring a protected component correctly.

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. On Windows 10, open Update & Security, then select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install all available Windows updates.
  6. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  7. Try the operation or application that produced the error again.

If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not repeatedly reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET unless a separate error specifically identifies one of those components.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the main repair path for a missing, damaged, or incorrectly serviced feclient.dll.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
  5. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  3. Leave the administrator Command Prompt open.

DISM may obtain repair files through Windows Update. If it completes successfully, continue with SFC even if the original error seemed to be fixed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run System File Checker

In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

Restart Windows after SFC completes, then test the affected operation.

Understand the result

SFC may report one of these general outcomes:

  • Did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact. Check antivirus quarantine and the application that reported the error.
  • Found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
  • Found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, confirm Windows Update works, and repeat SFC after restarting.
  • Could not perform the requested operation: restart into normal Windows and try again, or investigate disk and servicing problems.

Microsoft’s full procedure and result guidance are in its System File Checker repair documentation.

Running these commands manually is useful, but it can be difficult to tell which component changed when several repairs are attempted. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows detected problems, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC remain the direct Windows repair path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

If Windows Security removed feclient.dll, repairing Windows may restore it. First determine whether a security product quarantined the file.

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Open Windows Security.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections.
  6. Open a detection that refers to the file or the affected Windows component.
  7. Check the reported path and detection details.

Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:

  • The file is in the expected Windows system location.
  • Its digital signature identifies Microsoft Corporation.
  • The detection is clearly a false positive.
  • A current security scan does not identify other suspicious files.

To inspect a file manually:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to %windir%System32.
  3. Right-click feclient.dll if it exists.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  6. Select the signature and choose Details.
  7. Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Microsoft Corporation.

A valid signature does not make an unexpected copy safe in every situation. Location matters too. A copy in a temporary folder, a user profile, or an application directory deserves investigation.

If you cannot verify the file, let the antivirus product remove it and repair Windows with DISM and SFC. Do not disable antivirus protection simply to make an application start.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Repair Windows 11 through Settings

Windows 11 includes a repair-reinstall option that reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.

Use it after updates, DISM, and SFC have not resolved a continuing system-component problem.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select System.
  4. Select Recovery.
  5. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  6. Select Reinstall now.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  8. Restart when Windows asks you to do so.

The option may not appear on every Windows installation. Microsoft describes the process in Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.

If Windows Update itself is broken, use matching Windows installation media as a repair source. Microsoft’s DISM guidance covers using /Source and /LimitAccess; the source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture. Do not guess a source path or use media for a different release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check the 32-bit and 64-bit situation

Do not select a replacement file based only on whether your computer says “64-bit.” The relevant question is also whether the process requesting the DLL is 32-bit or 64-bit.

On 64-bit Windows:

  • System32 normally contains 64-bit system components.
  • SysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit system components.
  • Windows redirects many 32-bit file-system requests automatically.
  • A 32-bit application may therefore interact with a file under the 32-bit system path without you manually moving anything.

To check Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Review System type.

For an application-specific failure, check whether the application is an old 32-bit program. If only that application fails, repair or reinstall the application from its official vendor or launcher. Do not place a downloaded feclient.dll next to its executable.

If restoring the file causes a different DLL name to appear, stop copying files. The new name may identify a missing dependency or an architecture mismatch. Diagnose that dependency instead.

Fix 6: Check the application that reports the error

A system-wide EFS problem and an application-local loading problem need different responses.

When several Windows functions fail

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, antivirus history, and the Windows 11 repair-reinstall path described above.

When only one application fails

  1. Close the application.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Install updates for that application from its official source.
  4. Use the application’s own Repair option if it has one.
  5. If repair is unavailable, uninstall and reinstall the application.
  6. Test again before adding any manually downloaded DLL.

No reliable evidence identifies a particular modern game as routinely shipping its own feclient.dll. The strongest documented use case is Windows EFS and related Windows environments, including some legacy Windows Embedded deployments.

If the application’s error mentions a different DLL after repair, use that filename as the next diagnostic target. Do not assume every named DLL belongs to the same package.

Fix 7: Review drivers and Device Manager only when the symptoms point there

A driver update is not the normal fix for feclient.dll. This file is a Windows EFS component, not a hardware driver. However, a broader servicing problem can occur alongside device errors, failed updates, or storage-controller warnings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Device Manager only when you also see hardware symptoms:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Look for a yellow warning icon.
  4. Expand the affected device category.
  5. Right-click the device.
  6. Select Properties and review Device status.
  7. Use Update driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the device manufacturer.
  8. Restart Windows and test again.

Do not remove a device merely because feclient.dll is missing. Windows Features also does not normally provide this DLL, so enabling random optional features is not a suitable repair.

Manually hunting compatible driver versions can be tedious when several devices show warnings. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that identifies outdated drivers, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional and does not replace DISM or SFC for this Windows component.

Fix 8: Check the file system if SFC cannot repair Windows

Repeated SFC failures can indicate file-system damage or a storage problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First save your work, then open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

chkdsk /f C:

Windows may report that the volume is in use and ask whether to schedule the check for the next restart. Type:

Y

Press Enter, then restart the computer. Allow the disk check to complete.

If the problem returns, review the SFC and CBS logs, check available disk space, and run the storage manufacturer’s diagnostic utility where appropriate. Microsoft also includes disk and update troubleshooting guidance in its Windows Update troubleshooting documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not register feclient.dll with regsvr32

Do not treat every DLL as a COM or ActiveX component.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that implement the DllRegisterServer entry point. A missing feclient.dll error does not establish that this file is a self-registering component, and registering it is not the normal repair method.

Running:

regsvr32 feclient.dll

can produce an error such as “The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.” That does not mean registration was almost successful. It means the command does not apply to that DLL.

Microsoft explains the role of DllRegisterServer and common registration errors in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid random DLL downloads

Do not download feclient.dll from a DLL archive and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder.

That approach can fail because:

  • The file may be malicious or modified.
  • The version may belong to another Windows build.
  • The architecture may be wrong.
  • The file may be unsigned.
  • The original component-store problem remains unrepaired.
  • The error may actually concern another dependency.
  • A private application copy can change which file Windows loads.

The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM, SFC, a matching Windows installation source, Windows repair-reinstall, or a repair/reinstallation of the affected application. There is no verified official standalone Microsoft download package for feclient.dll.

Legacy Windows Embedded exception

A historical Windows Embedded for Point of Service deployment had a documented EFS-related Feclient failure. That issue was addressed by an obsolete Microsoft package for that specific legacy environment.

Do not use the old package as a general Windows 10 or Windows 11 repair. Modern installations should use current Windows servicing and repair methods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

EFS files and certificates are separate

Repairing feclient.dll can restore the Windows component, but it does not recover lost EFS certificates or decrypt files without the required keys.

If you use EFS, preserve the associated certificates and private keys separately. Microsoft documents certificate handling in Migrate EFS files and certificates.

System Restore can be considered when repair tools fail and a restore point predates the problem, but it is not the first-line fix. It may remove applications or updates installed after that restore point.

FAQ

Is feclient.dll a genuine Microsoft file?

Yes. feclient.dll is identified as Windows NT File Encryption Client Interfaces, published by Microsoft Corporation as part of Microsoft Windows Operating System. Verify the signature and location of a local copy rather than trusting the filename alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is feclient.dll part of Visual C++?

No verified evidence supports that attribution. The file is associated with Windows EFS. Reinstalling Visual C++ does not normally restore this Windows component.

Should I download feclient.dll separately?

No. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows repair-reinstall, or a matching installation source. A third-party DLL copy can be unsafe or incompatible.

Should I run regsvr32 feclient.dll?

Normally no. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide DllRegisterServer; this is not the established repair method for feclient.dll.

Why does the error mention an application or game?

The application may be the process that requested the Windows component. If only one program fails, repair or reinstall that program after repairing Windows. The message does not prove that the application shipped the DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if SFC says there are no integrity violations?

Check Windows Security Protection History, verify the file’s Microsoft signature and location, and repair the affected application. The message may refer to a dependency or an application-local copy rather than a damaged protected Windows file.

Will restoring feclient.dll recover encrypted files?

No. Restoring the DLL repairs a Windows component. EFS-encrypted files still require the correct certificate and private key.
