“ This application failed to start because ioctl880.dll was not found.” If Windows says “The program can’t start because ioctl880.dll is missing from your computer,” the repair is usually the matching AVerMedia application and driver package, not a downloaded copy of the DLL.
The 60-second answer
ioctl880.dll is the IOCtrl component of AVerMedia IOCtrl, published by AVerMedia TECHNOLOGIES, Inc. It is associated with older AVerMedia AVerTV and capture-device software, not with Windows itself.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The safest repair is:
- Identify the exact AVerMedia tuner or capture device.
- Download the matching driver and application package from AVerMedia’s official support area or use the original installation media.
- Remove the incomplete or incorrect installation if necessary.
- Reinstall the complete package, reboot, reconnect the hardware, and start AVerTV again.
- Check antivirus quarantine before attempting anything more advanced.
Do not download ioctl880.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into both System32 and SysWOW64. That can introduce malware, install the wrong build, or leave the actual driver and application problem unresolved.
What is ioctl880.dll?
Public file metadata describes ioctl880.dll as:
- Description:
IOCtrl - Product: AVerMedia IOCtrl
- Publisher: AVerMedia TECHNOLOGIES, Inc.
- Role: A support component used by legacy AVerMedia software and capture-device driver packages
Historical AVerMedia packages place IOCtl880.dll alongside device drivers, setup files, and AVerTV-related software. The exact original AVerMedia product model cannot be established from the filename alone, so the correct package must be matched to the hardware.

The known public file is documented as a 32-bit Win32 component. That does not mean it belongs in a Windows system folder. A 32-bit AVerTV application may need a 32-bit DLL even when it is running on 64-bit Windows.
There is no reliable evidence that ioctl880.dll ships with Windows, Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Windows normally will not restore it through its own protected system-file mechanism.
Messages commonly associated with this file
You may see one of these messages when launching AVerTV, a capture utility, or an installer:
- “This application failed to start because ioctl880.dll was not found.”
- “The file ioctl880.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: ioctl880.dll.”
- “Error loading ioctl880.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because ioctl880.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Cannot register ioctl880.dll.”
These phrases are not all equivalent. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that Windows found ioctl880.dll but could not load one of its dependencies. The missing item may be another file, an incompatible driver, or a component that was never installed.
Before repairing anything, note:
- Which application shows the error
- Whether it appears during startup, installation, or device access
- Whether the AVerMedia hardware is connected
- Whether Device Manager detects the hardware
- Whether the problem began after uninstalling AVerTV, updating Windows, cleaning the disk, reinstalling a driver, or an antivirus detection
- Whether the original AVerMedia installer is still available
Why the error happens
The AVerMedia software was removed incompletely
This is the most likely cause. A cleanup utility, failed uninstall, interrupted setup, or manual deletion may remove the DLL while leaving a shortcut or startup entry that still tries to load it.
The wrong package was installed
Older AVerMedia products often have similar names but require different drivers and applications. A package for one tuner or capture card may not supply the files needed by another.
Antivirus quarantined the file
Security software may have removed the DLL from an old installer or installed program. A quarantine event is not proof that the file is safe. It is a reason to verify the installer and understand the detection before restoring anything.
Another dependency is missing
The DLL may be present but unable to load because a related driver or runtime component is absent. Replacing the named file alone will not correct that dependency chain.
The application is obsolete
A legacy AVerMedia application may not have a compatible package for the current Windows release. A file being available somewhere online does not establish that the complete hardware package works on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Fix 1: Reinstall the complete AVerMedia package
This is the repair I would try first in a workshop.
Step 1: Identify the hardware
- Connect the AVerMedia tuner, capture device, or card.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras, Sound, video and game controllers, Other devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for an AVerMedia entry, an unknown device, or a device with a yellow warning icon.
- Double-click the entry and open the Details tab.
- Select Hardware Ids from the Property menu.
- Record the model name or hardware ID.
If nothing appears, shut down the computer and check the physical connection, expansion-card seating, USB cable, and power. For a PCI or PCIe capture card, do not assume the application can work until Windows detects the card.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Step 2: Remove the broken application
If AVerTV or an AVerMedia capture utility appears in the installed programs list:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for AVerMedia, AVerTV, or the capture application name.
- Select the program’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If the uninstall process fails, remove only the AVerMedia program that is clearly associated with the device. Do not delete random DLLs from Windows folders.
Step 3: Obtain the matching package
Use AVerMedia’s official support and download area, search by the exact product model, and select the package intended for your Windows architecture. If the product is discontinued, check the original AVerMedia media or an officially archived package supplied for that model.
Do not choose a package merely because its name contains “AVerTV.” Confirm the hardware model and read the package notes. A 32-bit application may require a 32-bit component even on 64-bit Windows.

Step 4: Install it
- Extract the downloaded package if it is compressed.
- Right-click the setup file and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the installer’s instructions.
- Keep the AVerMedia device connected if the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows when setup finishes.
- Open the AVerMedia application from the Start menu.
A successful repair normally means the application opens without the ioctl880.dll message and the capture device appears in the application’s device or source list. If setup still fails, return to Device Manager and check whether the device has a warning icon.
Optional driver-management recommendation
Manually identifying an old model, comparing architecture requirements, and hunting through several driver packages can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, with driver installation handled by the full version, but reinstalling the exact AVerMedia package remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
If the problem started immediately after an antivirus scan or cleanup, inspect Protection History.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the AVerMedia program stopped working.
- Select the relevant detection to view its details.

- It came from the genuine AVerMedia installer.
- The installer source is trusted.
- You understand why Windows Security flagged it.
- The complete package will be reinstalled or repaired afterward.
Microsoft warns that allowing an unsafe file can expose the device. If the detection concerns the installer itself, do not restore the DLL in isolation. Obtain a clean official package instead.
After restoring a confirmed file, reinstall the complete AVerMedia application and driver package. A restored DLL without its matching driver files may still fail to load.
Fix 3: Check whether the hardware and application match
A common repair mistake is installing software for a similar but different capture product.
- Open Device Manager.
- Locate the AVerMedia device.
- Open Properties and read the model information on the General and Details tabs.
- Compare that model with the package you downloaded.
- If the package is wrong, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall the incorrect AVerMedia software.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the package for the exact model.
Do not overwrite a working DLL with a file from another AVerMedia product. Matching the hardware package matters more than matching the filename.

Do not assume that a 64-bit Windows installation needs a 64-bit copy of every application DLL.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components only if Windows itself is damaged
DISM and SFC are useful when Windows components or system servicing are corrupted. They are not a normal way to recreate a missing third-party AVerMedia DLL.
First install pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the permission prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the AVerMedia application again. If it reports no integrity violations, that does not prove the AVerMedia installation is correct. SFC usually will not restore ioctl880.dll because it is not identified as a protected Windows component.
Repeating SFC will not replace a vendor DLL that was never installed. Outbyte PC Repair can show what it finds during its scan, while the full version performs the repair; the complete AVerMedia reinstall remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 5: Look for a second missing dependency
If ioctl880.dll exists in the AVerMedia program folder but the application still will not start, investigate the full error rather than copying another DLL.
- Confirm that the file is in the application’s installation directory.
- Open Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the AVerMedia application failed.
- Record the application name, faulting module, and any additional missing component.
- Check Device Manager for driver errors.
- Repair or reinstall the complete AVerMedia package.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because a DLL error appeared. Use those runtimes only when the application’s installer or a specific error identifies them as required.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
If AVerTV worked before a driver update, cleanup operation, or software installation, System Restore may undo the configuration change.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally affects system configuration and installed programs rather than personal files, but review the affected-program list before proceeding. Afterward, test the AVerMedia application and prevent Windows or a device utility from immediately reinstalling the wrong package.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShould you run regsvr32 ioctl880.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command. There is no verified evidence that this legacy IOCtrl component is a COM server that requires registration.
Running:
regsvr32 ioctl880.dll
may produce a message such as “The DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.” That does not necessarily mean the file is corrupt. It may simply mean that the DLL is an ordinary application-support component loaded directly by AVerTV.
Use regsvr32 only when the AVerMedia installer or a documented repair procedure specifically requires registration. Even then, use the copy installed by the matching package, not a downloaded replacement.
Should you copy the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Do not copy ioctl880.dll into both folders.
System32 is not a universal label for 32-bit files, and SysWOW64 is not a universal destination for every 32-bit DLL. Windows selects files according to the calling application, installation path, and architecture. The correct location is normally the directory chosen by the AVerMedia installer.
Recommended Free Tools
Manual copying can:
- Hide the real installation problem
- Place an incompatible version where another program loads it
- Trigger another dependency error
- Make future uninstall and repair operations unreliable
- Leave the device driver uninstalled
If the AVerMedia hardware was removed
If the error appears during Windows startup after you disconnected or discarded the hardware, the remaining startup entry may be the problem.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the obsolete AVerMedia application.
- Restart Windows.
- If the message remains, open Task Manager.
- Select the Startup apps tab.
- Disable a clearly identified AVerMedia startup entry.
- Restart again.
Do not disable unknown startup items solely because their names look unfamiliar. If the old hardware is still needed, reinstall its complete package instead.
When the hardware is no longer supported
If AVerMedia does not provide a compatible package for your product and Windows release, the realistic choices are:
Best Value
- Level up your gameplay with support for refresh rates up to 240Hz
- Use the original installation media.
- Use an officially archived package supplied for the exact model.
- Run the legacy setup on a compatible older Windows environment.
- Replace the unsupported capture device with a currently supported model.
A standalone DLL mirror is not an official compatibility solution. Even if the file has the expected name, it may not include the required driver, application, dependencies, or hardware support.
FAQ
Is ioctl880.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence indicates that it ships with Windows. It is associated with AVerMedia IOCtrl and legacy AVerMedia software.
What program uses ioctl880.dll?
It is associated with older AVerTV and AVerMedia capture-device driver packages. The exact product cannot be identified from the filename alone.
Is ioctl880.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The known public file is documented as a 32-bit Win32 component. A 32-bit application may require it on 64-bit Windows. Do not infer the correct replacement from the Windows system architecture alone.
Can I download ioctl880.dll by itself?
That is not the safe repair. Obtain the complete matching AVerMedia package from the vendor or original media. A random DLL may be malicious, incompatible, or missing the driver components the application actually needs.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file is present?
The named DLL may depend on another missing or incompatible component. Check the full application error, Device Manager, Event Viewer, and the complete AVerMedia installation.
Will SFC restore ioctl880.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while ioctl880.dll is an AVerMedia application component.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Not as a normal fix. Use regsvr32 only when the vendor installer explicitly requires it and the DLL is known to expose a registration entry point.
What if the error started after antivirus quarantine?
Review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Restore the file only when its genuine origin and the security alert are understood. Otherwise reinstall from a trusted AVerMedia package.
What is the final check?
The repair is complete when the exact AVerMedia device appears without a Device Manager warning, the application opens without the DLL message, and the device is available as a capture or tuner source.
