To run multiplayer, download the matching server installer from FTB’s Server Files page, keep its original filename, and make the client and server use exactly the same pack version. A rented server is the least technical hosting option; hosting at home costs less in software but requires an always-on computer, adequate resources, and careful port forwarding.

What the FTB launcher does
The FTB App is Feed The Beast’s official launcher for its modpacks. FTB ended its distribution partnership with CurseForge, so current FTB pack updates are delivered through FTB’s own app rather than through an older third-party workflow. Download the app from FTB’s official app page.

The launcher handles pack installation, version selection, updates, account authentication and launching. Server files are now published on the FTB website. The App still exposes those files from the Versions button on a modpack’s page, but the current supported route is the FTB Server Files page and its pack-specific installer.
Check these requirements before installing
- A Minecraft account: Add the account you own to the FTB App before launching a pack or joining a server.
- The pack’s required Java release: Java 17 or Java 21 is commonly required by current packs, according to a 2026 commercial hosting guide, but that is not a universal rule. Use the Java version stated in the specific pack’s documentation.
- Memory and CPU headroom: Modpacks can use substantially more resources than unmodified Minecraft. A 2026 hosting guide claims that large packs may need 8–12 GB of RAM and a strong CPU; this is a vendor estimate, not an FTB-wide requirement.
- Disk space: Leave room for the launcher, downloaded mods, libraries, configuration files, worlds, logs and backups. Large packs and long-running worlds grow over time.
- A stable network: You need a reliable connection for downloads and, when hosting, sufficient upstream capacity for every connected player.
Do not choose Java or a RAM allocation from a generic chart if the pack’s own page specifies something different. Pack authors can change loaders, mods and runtime requirements between versions.

Install the FTB App on Windows
- Open the official FTB app page and download the Windows installer.
- Run the installer and follow the setup prompts.
- Leave Run FTBApp checked on the final installer screen, then click Finish.
- When the app opens, sign in and add your Minecraft account. The account must own the edition required by the pack.
The Windows installation sequence above follows the current installer guidance. macOS and Linux users should use the package offered for their operating system and then complete the same account and pack-selection steps inside the app.
Install and play an FTB modpack
Choose a pack and version
- Open the FTB App and browse the modpack catalogue.
- Select a pack to open its modpack page.
- Choose the version you intend to play. If you are joining an existing server, obtain the server operator’s exact pack name and version first.
- Click the install control and wait for the launcher to download the pack, mods and libraries.
Do not assume that “latest” is correct for a multiplayer server. A server may remain on an older release for stability or because its world and mods have not been upgraded.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Launch a single-player world
After installation, select the pack in your library and click Play. The first launch can take longer while the launcher builds the instance and verifies files. If it fails, record the pack version and inspect the crash or launcher log before changing files; random mod removal often creates a different, incompatible installation.

Join a multiplayer server
- Install the same pack and version used by the server.
- In the FTB App, make sure the correct Minecraft account is active.
- Launch the pack and open Minecraft’s Multiplayer menu.
- Choose Add Server, enter a recognizable name, and enter the administrator’s address in
IP:portform. - Save the entry and connect.
The most frequently reported connection failure is a client/server version mismatch. Compare the complete pack version on both sides, not just the Minecraft base version. A missing, added or changed gameplay mod can also prevent a connection. Client-only extras such as shaders or minimaps are generally tolerated, but anything that changes the server’s mod set must match exactly.
Download official FTB server files
FTB’s Server Files page is the supported source for dedicated-server packages. Each pack provides a single server-installer executable. That binary downloads, updates and extracts the required server files for the selected pack and version.
Use the desktop download
- Open the FTB Server Files page.
- Select your operating system.
- Choose the pack and version, normally the version you want players to run.
- Choose the Desktop download method and click the button for the pack’s installer.
- Save the executable in the folder where you want the server files created.
Use the server or terminal method
- On the same page, select your operating system, pack and version.
- Choose the Server method.
- Copy the
curlcommand displayed by FTB and run it in the intended server directory. - Allow the installer to finish downloading and extracting the pack before starting the server.
Never rename the installer. FTB’s installer reads its filename to determine which pack it must install. Renaming it can make the process fail or cause it to target the wrong package. If you need a clearer folder name, rename the containing directory instead.

Older forum posts describe links to authorization-protected APIs and cases where a plain ZIP was not offered. Those instructions may no longer describe the current service. An unofficial modpacks.ch API route can expose individual jars and configuration files, but it is not FTB-supported; use it only after verifying the files against the current FTB documentation.
Host an FTB server on your own PC
Home hosting gives you direct control over files and avoids a recurring server rental, but the machine must remain powered on whenever anyone wants to play. Opening an inbound port also exposes a service on your home network, so configure the router and firewall deliberately.
Basic setup sequence
- Download the correct pack installer from FTB’s Server Files page and place it in a dedicated server directory.
- Run the installer without changing its filename. Let it create the libraries, configuration and server files.
- Read the pack’s generated instructions and documentation before changing startup settings.
- Open
start.baton Windows orstart.shon macOS/Linux in a text editor. - Set the minimum and maximum memory values appropriate for the pack and the rest of the computer. Leave enough RAM for the operating system and any desktop applications.
- Start the server from the supplied script. The first run may create additional files; stop it cleanly and review the generated configuration before inviting players.
- Forward the server’s listening port in your router to the computer running the server. Router menus differ by model, so use the router’s own documentation for the exact fields.
- Give players the public address and port, while using the local address for computers on the same home network when appropriate.
Do not expose the administration interface or unrelated services through the router. Keep the operating system, Java runtime and pack files updated, and restrict who receives the public address.
Rank #4

Home hosting trade-offs
| Consideration | Home PC | Rented server |
|---|---|---|
| Uptime | Online only while your computer, power and internet connection remain available. | Designed to stay online independently of your personal computer. |
| Capacity | Limited by the RAM, CPU, storage and upload speed you already own. | Choose a plan with a stated allocation and upgrade when the world or player count grows. |
| Setup effort | Install files, edit startup settings, configure the OS and forward a router port. | Often a one-click installation; manual file placement may still be required. |
| Cost pattern | No server-rental bill, but electricity, hardware and network limitations remain. | Recurring charge; pricing and resource quality vary by provider. |
| Network exposure | Requires an inbound port on your home connection. | The provider supplies the public endpoint, reducing the need to expose your home router. |
Host the pack on a rented server
Rented hosting is usually simpler when the server must be available while your PC is off or when you do not want to configure port forwarding. The provider controls the machine and network; you still control the pack version, world and configuration.

On panels that support FTB directly, open the panel’s Version tab, choose Modpacks, filter for FTB, select the required pack and click Install. The exact labels can differ, but the workflow is generally found under the server version or software selector. Confirm the installed pack version before starting the server and give every player that same version in the FTB App.
Manual installation when the panel has no FTB entry
- Create or select the server instance in the host’s control panel.
- Download the official FTB server installer for the exact pack and version.
- Run the installer in the provider’s server directory, or upload the generated files according to the host’s instructions.
- For packs version 1.6.4 and later, one hosting guide instructs users to place the
librariesfolder inside thejarfolder alongside the FTB server jar, while putting the other generated subfolders at the server root. Follow the host’s current directions if its panel uses a different layout. - Set Java and memory in the panel’s startup settings, then start the server and examine the console for errors.
Manual layouts are provider-specific. If the console reports missing libraries, check the folder hierarchy before downloading random jars from unofficial sources.

Interpreting hosting prices
| Published figure | What it represents | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| About €4.88 per GB | CreeperHost in a wiki comparison | Dated comparison figure; hosting prices change and the number does not describe CPU, storage, backups or support. |
| About €1.95 per GB | ServerPrism in the same comparison | Dated comparison figure; a lower RAM price may not mean equivalent CPU performance or backup policy. |
Compare more than RAM price. CPU quality, storage speed, backup retention, location, player support and the ability to change Java or startup arguments can matter as much as the advertised per-gigabyte rate.
Match client and server versions exactly
Version matching is the central FTB multiplayer rule. The client and server should use the same pack release and the same required mod set. “Almost the same” is not enough when a mod changes network protocols, registries or configuration.
- Write down the pack name and complete version before installing.
- Use the server’s version selector or startup output to verify what is actually running.
- Do not remove a mod from the server or client to make an error disappear; restore the pack’s complete file set first.
- Keep optional visual tools, shaders and minimaps on the client side only unless the pack documentation says otherwise.
- When updating, stop the server, back up the world, update the server files, update every client and test before allowing normal play.
Troubleshoot startup and connection failures
The launcher or server crashes immediately
- Open the crash report and latest log rather than repeatedly restarting.
- Record the pack version, operating system and Java version.
- Check the pack’s own Java requirement. Current packs often use Java 17 or 21, but the pack’s documentation takes priority over a general hosting recommendation.
- Look for a named missing dependency, duplicate mod or conflict. A 2026 hosting guide identifies mod conflicts and missing dependencies as common causes.
- Restore any files you removed and reinstall the exact server installer if the directory has been altered.
Changing several variables at once makes the log harder to interpret. Change Java, memory or a mod only when the error points to that variable, and keep a copy of the original log.
Players cannot connect
- Version mismatch: Compare the complete pack release on the player’s FTB App and the server.
- Wrong address: Verify the public IP or hostname and port. Players on the same home network may need the server’s local address instead.
- Port forwarding: Confirm that the router forwards the selected port to the computer’s current local IP and that the operating-system firewall permits Java.
- Incomplete installation: Check that the libraries and generated subfolders are in the locations expected by the pack and hosting panel.
- Changed mods: Restore the original mod list on both ends before testing again.
The world lags or takes too long to load
For heavy packs, a commercial 2026 guide recommends pre-generating terrain with Chunky, limiting how many chunks each player can load and restarting the server every 12–24 hours. These are operational suggestions, not guaranteed fixes. Apply them only after checking the pack’s own configuration and watching the server log, because aggressive chunk limits can affect exploration and automated builds.
Also check whether the computer is swapping memory, whether the host is oversubscribed, and whether a single mod or dimension causes the slowdown. More RAM cannot compensate for a weak CPU, slow storage or an unsuitable Java version.
Choose the right hosting route
Choose a home PC when
- You can leave the machine and network online for the sessions your group expects.
- You are comfortable editing startup scripts and configuring router port forwarding.
- You want direct access to every file and are willing to maintain backups and updates.
Choose a rented server when
- Players need access while your personal computer is off.
- You want a control panel and one-click installation rather than manual networking.
- Your home upload speed, hardware or network security makes self-hosting unsuitable.
- You prefer a predictable monthly cost to maintaining a dedicated machine.
Whichever route you choose, begin with the official FTB App and the official Server Files installer. Confirm the pack’s Java and resource requirements from its own documentation, preserve the installer filename, and distribute one exact version to every player.
