Spoilers for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and the original Final Fantasy VII. The Chapter 14 climax is a four-battle boss rush, and its ending deliberately refuses to give a simple answer about Aerith. The clearest reading is that Aerith dies in the party’s reality, while Cloud simultaneously experiences—or accesses—a version of events in which she survives. The game leaves the exact relationship between alternate worlds, the Lifestream, and Cloud’s perception unresolved.
Where FF7 Rebirth’s final boss sequence begins
The ending takes place in Chapter 14, “End of the World,” at the Forgotten Capital. Before reaching the altar, the game warns you to prepare the entire roster because every party member is used during the upcoming sequence. Your first allies are selected by Cloud’s relationship rankings; Aerith is excluded from that calculation. The final sequence consists of:

- Jenova Lifeclinger
- Sephiroth at the Forgotten Capital
- Sephiroth Reborn
- Cloud and Aerith versus Sephiroth
The party changes repeatedly between phases, so distributing healing, revival, defensive and elemental Materia across the whole roster is more important than building only your favorite team.

Equip every character who may be forced into battle with healing and revival options, increased HP, defensive tools such as Steadfast Block, and enough ATB support to use those abilities reliably. You also need Fire, Ice, Lightning and Wind coverage. These elements are especially important during Sephiroth Reborn’s final wing phase.

Do not put every useful Materia on Cloud, Tifa or Aerith. The game rotates characters, and a character you rarely use may suddenly be responsible for exploiting a wing’s weakness. Poison cleansing is also valuable because several attacks can leave characters vulnerable to follow-up damage.
1. Jenova Lifeclinger
Jenova Lifeclinger has no standard elemental weakness. It has lesser resistance to Ice and Wind, greater resistance to Stop, and immunity to proportional damage, Slow, Poison, Stone and Morph. The fight is built around survival checks, barriers and forced party changes rather than simply attacking one target until it falls.
Phase 1: Cloud and two allies
The battle begins with Cloud and two relationship-based allies. Jenova uses Contaminant Expulsion to remove reserve members and can later expel the remaining allies. While Cloud still has allies, Jenova’s HP cannot be reduced below roughly 80 percent.
Its attacks include Castigate, an area explosion that inflicts Deshell; Vengeance, a laser pattern; Mourning Wail, a damaging vortex; Eye of Providence, a tracking grab; and Blizzaga, Aeroga and Bioga. Azure Resplendence creates tracking flames, while Prismatic Compression charges the dangerous Obliterate attack.
Jenova periodically creates barriers and gains the Shield status. Physical attacks will not damage it while the barrier is active, so switch to magic or attacks that can remove the protection.
Phase 2: The party returns
After Cloud breaks through Jenova’s containment, the allies return and the arena becomes more hazardous. The key mechanic is Prismatic Compression. Deal enough damage during the charge to interrupt Obliterate. If the cast completes, the attack can overwhelm an underprepared party.
Phase 3: The arena contracts
Jenova uses Contaminant Expulsion again, removing party members and shrinking the fighting space. Deplete its remaining HP to finish the battle—but not the climax. Sephiroth appears immediately afterward.
2. Sephiroth at the Forgotten Capital
Cloud fights Sephiroth alongside Zack Fair. Sephiroth uses attacks such as Skewer, Zanshin, Hell Dive, Aura Charge and Octaslash. If Octaslash is not interrupted, he can follow it with Octaslash Prime.
The practical objective is to interrupt the Octaslash charge. Cloud’s attacks, Zack’s charged abilities and the SOLDIER’s Honor Synergy Ability can break the sequence. The battle ends automatically when Sephiroth reaches approximately 1 percent HP, leading into Sephiroth Reborn.

3. Sephiroth Reborn
Sephiroth Reborn has no elemental weakness and is immune to most status effects, including Poison, Slow, Stop, Silence, Sleep, Petrify, Stone and proportional damage. The encounter has several distinct objectives.
Phase 1: Cloud alone
Cloud begins alone against Sephiroth Reborn’s enormous body. Target the Body part behind the boss. Staying behind it is comparatively safer because many frontal attacks cannot reach that position.
Watch for Whisper Vortex, Errant Whisper, Hell’s Gate, Maelstrom and Interred Horror. After destroying the Body, Cloud climbs higher onto Sephiroth Reborn and continues fighting through attacks including Swarm, Zanshin, Hell’s Gate and Apocalyptic Fire. This stage ends at a scripted HP threshold.
Phase 2: Bahamut Arisen Whisper and the wings
The party changes, with Cait Sith included alongside two other relationship-determined characters. Sephiroth becomes largely untargetable and summons Bahamut Arisen Whisper.
The objective is not to permanently defeat Bahamut. Destroy both of Sephiroth Reborn’s wings. Bahamut’s HP can be restored by Blessing of Calamity, so focusing on Bahamut alone wastes time.
The wings become vulnerable during named attacks:
- Atonement: exposes a wing briefly.
- Spirit of Calamity: exposes a wing and enables Bahamut’s Particle Charge.
- Blessing of Calamity: revives and heals Bahamut while exposing both wings.
Bahamut can use Gigaflare early in this phase. It can kill a party beginning the attack at half health or less, so heal before the cast completes.

Zack fights alone, though he can still use a Synergy Ability with Cloud. His attacks depend on Charge levels:
- Level 1: Chain Slash I and Meteor Shot I.
- Level 2: Chain Slash II and Meteor Shot II.
- Level 3: Chain Slash III, Meteor Shot III and High Braver.
Wail creates a tracking orb. If it catches Zack, Sephiroth follows with Retribution. A ring of flowers can block certain attacks and trap Wail, allowing Zack to send the energy back toward Sephiroth. The phase ends at a scripted HP threshold.
Phase 4: Elemental wings and the Core
Sephiroth Reborn’s Core is shielded, and attacks against it initially do negligible damage. Destroy both wings to remove the shield. The wings cycle in this order:
Rank #3
| Wing affinity | Color | Weakness |
|---|---|---|
| Fire | Red | Ice |
| Ice | White-blue | Fire |
| Lightning | Purple | Wind |
| Wind | Green | Lightning |
The associated attacks are Infernal Flare, Great Tribulation, Keraunos and Rapture. The wings are immune to physical attacks and strongly resist non-weak elemental magic, so match the counter-element rather than throwing random spells at them.

Other attacks include Atonement, Profane, Spirit of Calamity and Blessing of Calamity.
Phase 5: Heartless Angel and Octaslash
After the Core is destroyed, Sephiroth gains Heartless Angel, which reduces the party’s HP to 1. Heal immediately. Poison makes this especially dangerous because a poisoned character can die before recovery.
If Sephiroth charges Octaslash, interrupt it with enough damage. A successful interruption creates a major damage opportunity and avoids the most dangerous version of the attack. Defeating Sephiroth Reborn triggers the final Cloud-and-Aerith battle.
4. Cloud and Aerith versus Sephiroth
The final fight is fought by Cloud and Aerith. Sephiroth uses Whisper-enhanced attacks including Whisper Cannon, Whisper Whirlwind, Errant Whisper, Skewer, Wicked Augment, Grip of Fate, Heartless Angel, The End is Nigh, Tempus Finis, Octaslash and Octaslash Prime.

During Whisper Cannon and Whisper Whirlwind, Sephiroth exposes either his wing or Masamune as a breakable part. Breaking those parts weakens or interrupts the attack and pressures him.
The End is Nigh
At around 20 percent HP, Sephiroth begins The End is Nigh. Whispers form a shrinking wall around the arena while more Whispers attack Cloud and Aerith. Sephiroth then uses Tempus Finis, becoming Pressured while gradually reducing his own stagger gauge.
Stagger Sephiroth before the sequence finishes. If you fail, he restrains Cloud and Aerith and performs Octaslash followed by Octaslash Prime, which is a guaranteed-death attack.
What actually happens to Aerith?
The safest answer is that Aerith dies in the main story reality, but Rebirth shows Cloud creating or perceiving a version of events in which he saves her. The game intentionally does not identify that surviving version as definitively a parallel-world Aerith, a Lifestream consciousness, a reality created by Cloud’s intervention, a hallucination or a combination of these possibilities.

The altar scene
- Aerith kneels at the Forgotten Capital altar to pray.
- Cloud arrives as Sephiroth descends to kill her.
- Cloud raises his sword and appears to deflect Masamune.
- A rainbow-like transition signals a split or change in presentation.
- One version of the scene shows Aerith saved and uninjured.
- The game cuts back to Aerith mortally wounded, with blood visible.
- Her White Materia falls from her hair into the water, echoing the original game.
- Cloud holds her and speaks as if she remains alive.
- Sephiroth refers to a “confluence of worlds,” and the game intercuts multiple versions of the event.
The literal consequence is that the rest of the party mourns Aerith and continues without her, while Cloud continues to see and speak with her. Calling this a straightforward resurrection is too definite; calling it only a hallucination is also unsupported by everything the game presents.
Why can Cloud see Aerith?
After the altar scene, the party sees Aerith’s dead body, but Cloud sees her get up and interact with him. He also sees a scar or rift in the sky that the others do not appear to see. Red XIII reacts when Aerith reaches toward him, suggesting that the sequence is not presented as an ordinary private hallucination—but this does not prove that the Aerith Cloud sees is physically alive in the party’s reality.
What the game establishes is:
- The party treats Aerith as dead.
- Aerith is absent from the physical party’s journey north.
- Cloud continues interacting with an Aerith the others generally cannot see.
- Aerith appears during the final Sephiroth battle and helps Cloud.
- Her exact state remains unresolved.
It does not confirm that Aerith has been permanently resurrected, that she is alive in the same physical world, that Cloud imagines every encounter, or that all displayed realities are conventional parallel universes.
The White Materia explained
Aerith’s White Materia loses its color during the game after the Whispers take away what it contained. Later, an alternate or Lifestream-associated Aerith gives Cloud a functioning White Materia and asks him to return it to the Aerith of his world.
Recommended Free Tools
During the altar sequence, the functioning White Materia falls from Aerith and drops into the water. Cloud later holds the clear White Materia. The game does not fully explain every transition between the functioning and clear versions, so its exact metaphysical rules remain uncertain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does Cloud still have the Black Materia?
At the end, Cloud discovers that he still possesses the Black Materia, equips it to his sword and says, “The Reunion.” The game does not show exactly when or how he reacquired it, nor does it show him giving it back to Sephiroth during Rebirth.
The ending establishes that Cloud has the Black Materia after the final battle, that the rest of the party does not appear to know he has it, and that Cloud associates it with Sephiroth’s Reunion. It remains a major unresolved danger for the third game.
What happens to Zack?
Zack participates in the climax but does not permanently join the main party. Rebirth presents him moving through multiple worlds or realities while Sephiroth manipulates the boundaries between them. Zack is ultimately separated from Cloud and Aerith.
The game confirms that Zack is active in at least one reality where Cloud is incapacitated and Aerith is in a coma. It does not fully define whether these are conventional parallel universes, Lifestream states or another structure connected to the Planet. The different Stamp designs distinguish versions of the world, but they are not a complete map of the game’s cosmology.

What does the scar in the sky mean?
Cloud sees a crack or scar across the sky after Aerith’s death, while the rest of the party does not appear to see it. The image signals that Cloud is experiencing a different layer or version of reality. It is associated with worlds approaching collapse or rejecting their destined course, but the game does not confirm that Cloud’s act of saving Aerith literally caused the scar.
The final conversation and ending title
After the party repairs the Tiny Bronco, Cloud speaks with Aerith while the others prepare to leave. Aerith says she will return to the Forgotten Capital and devote herself to praying against Meteor. Cloud promises to stop Sephiroth. She tells him not to worry because the place she is going is like a second home.
Plot-wise, her prayer and Holy remain central to the fight against Meteor. Emotionally, the scene shows Cloud unable—or unwilling—to accept her death, while Aerith understands that she must separate from him. She says goodbye as the Tiny Bronco departs. Cloud clearly engages with her presence, while Red XIII appears to sense something.

How to replay the final sequence
After completing the story, select System → Chapter Selection. Chapter Selection preserves your current stats, weapons and Materia. Hard Mode unlocks after clearing the story; it disables item use, prevents Rest Spots from restoring HP and sets enemies to Level 70.
During Chapter 14, checkpoints appear between major battles and sections. If you lose, the Game Over screen offers retry choices such as Retry from Before Current Battle. A broader retry option can send you back several phases, and there is no normal save point between every encounter. This is particularly significant on Hard Mode.
The most accurate conclusion
Sephiroth kills the physical Aerith at the Forgotten Capital. Cloud’s intervention creates or accesses a version of events in which he appears to save her, but that outcome overlaps with the reality in which the party finds her dead. The party continues without Aerith, while Cloud remains connected to an Aerith who can communicate with him and help fight Sephiroth.

Rebirth preserves both the emotional reality of her death and the possibility that an Aerith connected to another world or the Lifestream remains active.
