It is a recurring DirectX 11 crash symptom that can be triggered by graphics-driver regressions, overlays, display settings, unstable hardware settings, corrupted files, peripherals, security software, or a particular Windows and GPU combination.
Start with the reversible fixes: restart Windows, disable overlays and third-party hooks, switch to Windowed or Borderless Windowed mode, lower the resolution, disable Fullscreen Optimizations, and return overclocked hardware to stock settings. If you use an older NVIDIA card, check Square Enix’s separate notice about launch crashes on Maxwell GTX 900-series and Pascal GTX 10-series GPUs and driver 581.80.

What error 11000002 means
The message is FFXIV’s fatal DirectX/DX11 crash notification. The number identifies the crash symptom, not the failed component. It does not prove that your graphics card is defective, that your RAM is bad, or that DirectX itself is corrupted.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Possible causes include a driver conflict, unstable GPU or CPU settings, an overlay injecting into the game, fullscreen or variable-refresh interactions, damaged game or configuration files, Windows or security-software interference, or a hardware-specific compatibility problem. Square Enix’s current guidance covers those possibilities rather than identifying one universal cause. See its crashes-after-launch guidance and abnormal-shutdown troubleshooting.

Use the fix that matches the timing
- Immediately after clicking Play: prioritize the GPU-driver exception, overlays, Fullscreen Optimizations, administrator permissions, display mode, and installation path.
- During the launcher-to-game transition: test overlays, fullscreen mode, HDR, G-SYNC or FreeSync, refresh rate, and driver versions.
- After entering a character: lower graphics settings, disable injectors and overlays, reset local configuration after backing it up, and test stock hardware settings.
- Only in one zone, cutscene, or effect: treat it as a reproducible graphics or configuration trigger rather than proof that the zone is universally broken.
- After several minutes or hours: check GPU temperatures, power stability, monitoring software, overclocks, undervolts, VRR, HDR, and whether other games also crash.
- After a driver, Windows, or FFXIV update: test the change most closely associated with the failure first; the newest driver is not automatically the best driver for every GPU.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Close FFXIV and restart Windows.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices temporarily.
- Disable Discord, Steam, NVIDIA or AMD, Xbox Game Bar, OBS, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, RGB, and hardware-monitoring overlays.
- Try Windowed or Borderless Windowed mode and lower the resolution.
- Disable Fullscreen Optimizations for
ffxiv_dx11.exe. - Update or cleanly reinstall the correct graphics and audio drivers.
- Return GPU, CPU, and RAM settings to stock.
- Install pending Windows updates and test security-software interference safely.
- Verify Steam files or check the installation path.
- Back up local settings before renaming configuration folders or reinstalling.
1. Restart and remove temporary variables
Exit the game and launcher completely, restart Windows, and launch FFXIV before reopening other software. Temporarily disconnect nonessential devices such as gamepads, webcams, microphones, headsets, unusual USB controllers, RGB hubs, and hardware-control devices.
This is a low-risk isolation test. Square Enix specifically recommends closing background applications and removing nonessential peripherals while diagnosing abnormal shutdowns. If the game works, reconnect devices and reopen programs one at a time to identify the trigger.
2. Disable overlays and game-injection software
Temporarily disable:
- Discord overlay
- Steam overlay
- NVIDIA App or GeForce overlay
- AMD overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner on-screen display
- OBS and other capture hooks
- RGB, monitoring, and tuning utilities
Square Enix technical-support guidance specifically calls out Discord, Steam, NVIDIA, and other overlays. This does not prove that an overlay caused your crash; it makes the client easier to test. If you use ReShade, Dalamud, ACT, or another third-party tool, test a clean, unmodified client before changing Windows or replacing hardware.
3. Reset display settings
If FFXIV closes before you can change its settings in-game, use the configuration utility:
Programs → SQUARE ENIX → FINAL FANTASY XIV → Launch FINAL FANTASY XIV Config → Configuration → Screen Settings
Test one change at a time:
- Windowed mode instead of Full Screen
- Borderless Windowed mode
- A lower resolution
- Lower shadow, texture, and other graphics settings
- A lower refresh rate
- HDR disabled
- G-SYNC or FreeSync disabled temporarily
Square Enix recommends changing display mode and reducing resolution or graphical processing. If one setting restores stability, raise quality gradually rather than changing every option at once. A community report associated a particular crash with G-SYNC and a driver rollback, but that is an anecdotal diagnostic lead, not a universal fix.
4. Disable Fullscreen Optimizations
Locate ffxiv_dx11.exe. Its location differs between the standalone and Steam clients. Then:
- Right-click
ffxiv_dx11.exe. - Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Check Disable Fullscreen Optimizations.
- Select Apply, then OK.
An official FFXIV technical-support moderator recommended this step in a 11000002 thread. It is reversible: return to the same box and clear the checkmark if it makes no difference.
5. Update or test another graphics driver
Install the driver intended for your exact GPU model from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel, then restart Windows. Update audio drivers as well if the crash information suggests an audio-device interaction.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, do not keep installing newer releases blindly. Record the current version and test the previous known-good driver where available. A driver regression can affect one GPU family or display feature without affecting every player.
Use the manufacturer’s official download page rather than a paid driver-updater utility. Reinstalling the same problematic driver repeatedly is unlikely to diagnose the cause.

Special case: older NVIDIA GTX 900 and GTX 10 series cards
Square Enix reports a specific launch-crash issue affecting some Maxwell-based GeForce GTX 900-series and Pascal-based GeForce GTX 10-series cards. Its notice says users reported that the issue did not occur with NVIDIA GeForce Game Ready Driver 581.80, released in November 2025.
If your card belongs to those families and the crash occurs at launch, consult Square Enix’s official notice and its referenced NVIDIA driver page. Restart after installing and test FFXIV again.
This is a hardware-specific reported remedy, not a universal fix for error 11000002. Do not install that older driver on unrelated hardware merely because the number matches your error. A rollback can also remove newer game optimizations or security fixes, so record your current driver first.
6. Return the hardware to stock settings
If the GPU, CPU, RAM, or motherboard is overclocked or undervolted, restore default settings and retest. Remove custom driver profiles. Temporarily disabling XMP or EXPO can be a diagnostic test if the system is unstable, but it should not be treated as a permanent FFXIV fix without evidence.

Forum users have reported improvement after reducing a GPU core clock or changing CPU BIOS settings. Those are anecdotal reports, not official solutions. Do not begin by disabling Hyper-Threading, SpeedStep, or other CPU features, and do not change BIOS voltages casually. Such changes can reduce performance, create new instability, or hide a failing component.
7. Check Windows, OneDrive, and security software
Install pending Windows updates and close synchronization or utility software while testing. Square Enix support has also suggested disabling OneDrive during diagnosis if it is interacting with the game’s local files.
For antivirus or firewall interference, use a controlled temporary test: add an appropriate exclusion or briefly disable protection, launch the game, and then immediately restore protection. Never leave antivirus or Windows Firewall permanently disabled. If the game only works with protection disabled, configure a narrow, documented exception or contact the security-software vendor.
8. Check the installation and game files
Standalone client
Square Enix recommends installing FFXIV on the C: drive because nondefault drives may cause problems. This is support guidance, not proof that every secondary-drive installation is defective. Move or reinstall only after the cheaper tests above.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSteam client
- Confirm that Steam and FFXIV are installed on the same drive.
- Disable the Steam overlay.
- Use Steam’s file-verification option.
- If verification repeatedly fails, reinstall the affected client.
These recommendations come from Square Enix technical-support guidance. They do not mean Steam users have a different DirectX error; the client and file-management steps simply differ.
9. Reinstall only after the reversible tests
Before reinstalling, back up screenshots, macros, HUD layouts, hotbars, and other local settings. Do not delete the entire My Games folder without a backup.
Square Enix’s reinstall guidance refers to the FFXIV folder under My Documents → My Games. Prefer renaming or backing up that folder first, such as by adding a date to its name, so you can restore settings if the reset does not help. Reinstalling can repair damaged installation data, but it will not fix an incompatible driver, unstable overclock, or overlay conflict.

Choose the next step by symptom
| Pattern | Prioritize |
|---|---|
| Crash immediately at launch | Older-NVIDIA notice if applicable, overlays, Fullscreen Optimizations, administrator launch, display mode, driver, and installation path. |
| Crash after a driver update | Disable VRR and overlays, reinstall the driver, test the prior driver, restore stock clocks, and check Windows updates. |
| Crash after several minutes | Stock hardware settings, temperatures, power stability, monitoring software, refresh rate, HDR, VRR, and other-game stability. |
| Crash in one area or effect | Lower resolution and graphics settings, change screen mode, disable injectors, and test a backed-up fresh configuration. |
| Other games also crash | Prioritize broader GPU, RAM, temperature, power, and hardware diagnostics rather than reinstalling FFXIV repeatedly. |
System requirements and the DX9 question
Square Enix’s referenced Windows requirements page labels the following minimums “as of December 3, 2021”: Windows 8.1 64-bit, Windows 10 64-bit, or Windows 11 64-bit; an Intel Core i5 2.4 GHz or higher; 4 GB RAM or more; 80 GB free disk space; an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 or higher or AMD Radeon R7 260X or higher; 1280×720 resolution; and DirectX 11.
The same page says integrated graphics do not meet those minimum requirements. These are dated minimums, not a guarantee that a current expansion will run well at high settings. Check current official requirements before judging performance on borderline hardware.
Do not switch to DX9 as a routine workaround. Square Enix says official DX9 support has ended, while the supported PC client referenced in its guidance is DX11.
What not to do
- Do not download
d3dcompiler,d3dx, or other DLLs from unofficial websites. - Do not delete DirectX registry keys.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus, Firewall, or Windows security features.
- Do not blindly install an old NVIDIA driver on unsupported hardware.
- Do not treat aggressive GPU underclocking as a universal fix.
- Do not disable CPU features or change BIOS voltages as first-line troubleshooting.
- Do not delete the Documents/My Games folder before backing up local settings.
- Do not reinstall Windows before testing drivers, overlays, display settings, stock clocks, and files.
- Do not buy a new GPU solely because this error code appeared once.
When to contact Square Enix
If the crash remains after testing a clean client, current or known-good drivers, stock hardware settings, display changes, and file integrity, contact Square Enix support. Include:
- the exact failure point: launch, transition, character entry, zone, effect, or elapsed time;
- GPU model and driver version;
- Windows version;
- Steam or standalone client;
- whether Steam and FFXIV share a drive;
- whether overlays, third-party tools, OneDrive, and security software were isolated;
- which changes helped or failed;
- the complete 11000002 message and any related crash details.
Use ffxivsysinfo.exe where available and attach the resulting system information if support requests it. A precise timeline is more useful than reporting only that “DirectX crashes.”
Bottom line: treat 11000002 as a symptom and troubleshoot in order. The best first tests are overlays, display mode, Fullscreen Optimizations, drivers, stock hardware settings, and installation or file integrity. The 581.80 recommendation is important only for the older NVIDIA launch-crash case described by Square Enix.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is FFXIV error 11000002 proof that my GPU is failing?
No. The code identifies a DirectX 11 crash symptom. Drivers, overlays, display features, files, software conflicts, and unstable settings can all produce similar failures. Hardware becomes more suspicious when other games or applications also crash.
Does reinstalling DirectX fix error 11000002?
It is not the central fix in the reviewed Square Enix guidance. Test drivers, overlays, display settings, stock hardware settings, and game files first, and avoid downloading DirectX DLLs from unofficial sites.
Will reinstalling FFXIV delete my settings?
It can affect local settings if you remove the FFXIV folder under Documents/My Games. Back up or rename that folder before reinstalling rather than deleting it immediately.
Should I switch FFXIV to DX9?
No. Square Enix says official DX9 support has ended. Troubleshoot the supported DX11 client instead.
