What the error means

You may see messages such as:

• “The program can’t start because fhuxapi.dll is missing from your computer.”
• “This application failed to start because fhuxapi.dll was not found.”
• “Error loading fhuxapi.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
• “fhuxapi.dll could not be loaded.”
• “fhuxapi.dll is corrupted.”
• “The file fhuxapi.dll doesn’t exist.”
• “fhuxapi.dll is not designed to run on Windows.”

These messages usually indicate one of four conditions:

1. The protected Windows file is missing or damaged.
2. The Windows component store cannot provide the file.
3. Security software quarantined the file.
4. The named DLL exists, but one of its dependencies is missing.

“Specified module could not be found” is especially ambiguous. Windows may be unable to find fhuxapi.dll, or it may find it but fail to load another DLL that fhuxapi.dll requires. The executable named in the error is important.

Before repairing anything

Record the exact details:

1. Note the full error text.
2. Write down the application or executable named in the message.
3. Check whether the error appears when Windows starts, when opening File History, or only with one application.
4. Check whether the file exists at C:WindowsSystem32fhuxapi.dll.
5. Right-click the file, choose Properties, open Digital Signatures, and check whether the signer is Microsoft.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the safest and most likely fix for a missing or corrupted fhuxapi.dll. Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management, or DISM, before System File Checker.

Run DISM

1. Open Start.
2. Type Command Prompt.
3. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
4. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
5. Run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

1. Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window while it is working.

DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for replacement system files. It may obtain repair files through Windows Update.

Run SFC

After DISM finishes, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.

Interpret the result

• Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files passed the scan. If the error remains, investigate the application, dependencies, or the exact executable named in the message.
• Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the affected feature again.
• Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more. If it still fails, review %WINDIR%LogsCBSCBS.log.

Running these commands manually is free, but it can be difficult to determine which component changed when repeated scans produce the same result. Outbyte PC Repair can show the problems identified by its free scan; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required when DISM and SFC resolve the issue.

If DISM reports that source files could not be found, first install pending Windows updates. Microsoft also documents using a matching Windows installation source with a command such as:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows only with a valid repair-source path that matches your installed Windows version closely. Do not use an arbitrary folder.

Fix 2: Install Windows updates

A damaged or incomplete update can leave Windows components unavailable.

1. Open Settings.
2. Select Windows Update.
3. Select Check for updates.
4. Install all available updates.
5. Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
6. Test the application or File History feature again.

On Windows 11, supported systems may show a repair option:

1. Open Settings.
2. Select System.
3. Select Recovery.
4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
5. Select Reinstall now.
6. Follow the prompts.

Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version while repairing system files and components and preserving apps, files, and settings. The option is not available on every Windows 11 configuration.

Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine

If fhuxapi.dll disappeared after a security scan, Defender may have quarantined it. Quarantine is only a possible cause, not proof that this file is commonly malicious.

1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
2. Select Virus & threat protection.
3. Select Protection history.
4. Review recent detections.
5. Open a detection that refers to the file.
6. Check the reported path, detection name, and action.
7. Run a full scan before restoring anything.

Restore the file only if you have verified that it was the Microsoft Windows file in the expected system location and the detection was a false positive. Do not restore an unsigned copy or a file found in a temporary or unexpected application directory.

If you suspect tampering, run Scan options, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan, and save open work before starting it.

Fix 4: Test the application that reports the error

If Windows passes DISM and SFC but one application still fails, the application may be damaged or incorrectly expecting a Windows component.

Repair the application

1. Open Settings.
2. Select Apps.
3. Select Installed apps.
4. Find the affected application.
5. Select its three-dot menu.
6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
7. Select Repair.
8. Test the application.

If Repair does not help, choose Reset only after checking what application data may be removed. Otherwise uninstall and reinstall the application using the developer’s official installer.

For a game, use the launcher’s official Verify files, Repair, or equivalent feature. Do not download fhuxapi.dll separately. The application’s installer or repair process should restore its own files, while Windows repair restores Microsoft components.

If the error appears only in one program and Windows itself is healthy, the program’s installation, configuration, or dependency chain deserves more attention than File History.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit loading

On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native system components, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit system components through Windows file-system redirection.

That naming is counterintuitive:

• System32 is normally used by 64-bit processes on 64-bit Windows.
• SysWOW64 supports 32-bit system components.
• A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application can receive different loading results.

Do not download a “32-bit” or “64-bit” copy from an archive and place it in one of these folders. Windows decides which system path a process sees, and manually replacing the file can make the mismatch worse.

If only a 32-bit application reports the error, repair that application after completing DISM and SFC. If both 32-bit and 64-bit programs fail, suspect Windows component damage rather than one application.

Fix 6: Update a related device or application only when evidence points there

fhuxapi.dll is not established as a device-driver DLL, so driver installation is not a primary fix. However, if the error began after a storage, backup, or device-related application update, check the affected device:

1. Right-click Start.
2. Select Device Manager.
3. Expand the relevant category, such as Storage controllers or Disk drives.
4. Right-click the device.
5. Select Properties.
6. Open the Driver tab.
7. Note the provider and driver status.
8. Use Update driver only with a driver from the device manufacturer or Windows Update.

Do not remove a working driver simply because a DLL error appeared. Hunting through many driver versions can add another variable to the diagnosis. Fix 7: Use System Restore or Windows recovery

Use System Restore when the problem began after a known software change and a restore point predates the failure.

4. Choose a restore point from before the error.
5. Review the affected programs.
6. Complete the restore and restart.

System Restore does not guarantee that every application, setting, or personal file will be preserved exactly as it was. If no suitable restore point exists, use the Windows repair reinstall described above. Reset this PC should be a later recovery step, after backing up important files and reviewing which applications will be removed.

What not to do

Do not download fhuxapi.dll from a random DLL website

A replacement may contain malware, belong to another Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or have been modified. Even a genuine-looking file may not repair the component store or the dependency that caused the load failure.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Microsoft recovery tools, Defender, and the official installer for the affected application instead.

Do not copy the file into System32 or an application folder

Copying a DLL into an application directory changes the loader’s search order and can cause the program to use an incorrect copy. Copying between computers is also unsafe unless the Windows edition and build match and the file’s provenance and signature are verified.

Do not routinely run regsvr32

regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft does not identify fhuxapi.dll as a COM or self-registering DLL. Running:

regsvr32 fhuxapi.dll

is therefore not a routine repair and may produce an entry-point error or accomplish nothing.

Do not reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET without evidence
