Start with this diagnostic checklist
wcmicons.dll is a Total Commander icon-library file, not a Windows system DLL. If Windows reports that wcmicons.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, check these points before changing anything:
- Does the error appear when starting Total Commander, or another shortcut?
- Is Total Commander still installed, or was its folder moved, deleted, or restored from an old backup?
- Does the reported path contain
totalcmd.exe? - Is the installation 32-bit, 64-bit, or a combined installation?
- Did the problem begin after an update, antivirus detection, cleanup, or manual file copy?
- Does
wcmicons.dllexist besidetotalcmd.exe?
The safest repair is to reinstall or update Total Commander from Ghisler Software GmbH’s official download page into the existing installation directory. Do not download an isolated DLL or copy one into System32.

What wcmicons.dll does
wcmicons.dll is an application resource and icon library used by Total Commander. It supplies icons for areas such as button bars, menus, and configured commands. Ghisler also uses a related file named wcmicon2.dll in some installations.
Recommended Free Tools
It normally belongs in the same directory as totalcmd.exe. It is not part of Windows, Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a hardware driver package. It does not normally need COM registration.

A copy found in System32, SysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory should not be treated as the correct replacement. The correct file is the one supplied with the matching Total Commander installation.
Fix 1: Repair Total Commander in its original folder
This is the most likely solution for a genuinely missing or damaged file.
- Close Total Commander.
- Right-click the shortcut that normally starts it.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, note the path in Target. It should point to
totalcmd.exe. - Open File Explorer and browse to that folder.
- Confirm whether
totalcmd.exeis present. - Open Ghisler’s official Total Commander download page in your browser.
- Choose the package matching your installation: 32-bit, 64-bit, or combined 32+64-bit.
- Run the installer.
- When asked for an installation directory, select the existing folder containing
totalcmd.exe. - Finish the installation and start Total Commander from that folder.
The current official download page lists separate 32-bit, 64-bit, and combined installers. There is no reliable public version, size, or hash table that should be used to select a standalone wcmicons.dll.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair worked if Total Commander starts without the error and its normal icons appear in button bars and menus. You should also be able to see wcmicons.dll beside totalcmd.exe.
If the installer reports an incomplete download or will not run, download it again from the official page. Ghisler’s installation guidance recommends reinstalling or updating into the same directory as the previous installation.
If the file is restored but the error remains, continue with the shortcut and duplicate-installation checks below.
Fix 2: Replace a bad shortcut or copied program folder
Total Commander can fail to find support files when its executable has been copied manually or when a shortcut points to an old directory.

- Find the real installation folder containing
totalcmd.exe. - Double-click
totalcmd.exedirectly. - If Total Commander opens, close it.
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop or the desired folder.
- Select New → Shortcut.
- Browse to the real
totalcmd.exe. - Select Next, enter a name such as
Total Commander, then select Finish. - Test the new shortcut.
- Delete or stop using the old shortcut that points to the obsolete path.
If launching totalcmd.exe directly works but the old shortcut does not, the DLL was not necessarily missing. The shortcut was likely invoking a moved or incomplete copy.
Also search for duplicate installations. In File Explorer, search for totalcmd.exe and inspect every result. Repair the installation that the working shortcut or error message actually uses.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed or quarantined the file. Do not restore it blindly.
In Windows Security:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the Total Commander directory.
- Open the detection details and confirm the file path.
- If the file came from an official Total Commander installation, scan the installation and installer before deciding whether to restore it.
- Restore or allow the file only when you have verified its source and authenticity.
Microsoft warns that restoring a detected threat can cause it to be detected again. If the file is genuinely missing, reinstalling Total Commander from Ghisler is safer than restoring an unexplained copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can check the installer’s authenticity by right-clicking it, selecting Properties, opening Digital Signatures, and verifying that the signature belongs to Ghisler.
If the detection points to System32, SysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory, do not restore that file as a Total Commander component. Run a full scan, and consider a Microsoft Defender Offline scan if malware is suspected.
Fix 4: Check whether the installation is mixed or incomplete
The official downloads include 32-bit-only, 64-bit-only, and combined packages. The safest approach is to restore the complete package that matches the Total Commander installation rather than mixing individual files.

Check the installation like this:
- Open the folder containing
totalcmd.exe. - Right-click
totalcmd.exe. - Select Properties.
- Review the Details tab for available product information.
- Compare that installation with the package you downloaded.
- Reinstall the matching official package into the same directory.
Do not copy wcmicons.dll from a different Total Commander release, another computer, or an unverified archive. A mismatched file may produce a load error even when the filename is correct.

Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 wcmicons.dll
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for installing or repairing every DLL. An icon and resource library normally does not need COM registration.
Running the command can create a second error and distract from the actual problem, which is usually an incomplete Total Commander directory, a stale shortcut, or quarantine.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only if Windows has other problems
Because wcmicons.dll belongs to Total Commander rather than Windows, System File Checker is not the primary repair. Use DISM and SFC when other Windows components are also failing, Windows features are damaged, or system files show broader corruption.

- Then run:
sfc /scannow
Run the commands separately. Restart Windows when both have completed, then test Total Commander again.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that corruption was repaired, or that no integrity violations were found. If they report errors that cannot be fixed, review the Microsoft guidance for System File Checker and repair Total Commander separately.

Repeating SFC and DISM will not recreate an application file that was removed from Total Commander’s directory. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; reinstalling Total Commander remains the definitive fix for this application file.
Fix 7: Do not update drivers unless other symptoms point there
A driver update is not a normal fix for wcmicons.dll. This file is an application icon library, not a display, storage, printer, or chipset driver.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the suspected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Do not uninstall random devices to repair this DLL. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show which versions need attention, while driver installation through the full version is optional; it is not a substitute for reinstalling Total Commander.
Fix 8: Use System Restore only as a fallback
System Restore may help if the error began immediately after a software installation, update, or configuration change, but it is not the normal solution for a missing application resource file.
- Open Start and search for Recovery.
- Open Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Next, review the affected programs, and select Finish.
Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains what is changed and what is not. If the Total Commander folder was deleted or damaged, reinstalling it is usually more direct.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A standalone DLL download can be malicious, incompatible with the installed Total Commander release, or built for the wrong architecture. Conflicting file sizes, hashes, and version labels found in third-party indexes are not a dependable specification.
Even a clean file may not solve the problem if:
- the shortcut points to another folder;
- the rest of the Total Commander installation is incomplete;
- antivirus removed the file again;
- the configuration references an obsolete icon path;
- files from different releases have been mixed.
Use Ghisler’s official Total Commander installer instead. Do not place wcmicons.dll in System32 or SysWOW64.

FAQ
Is wcmicons.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with Total Commander and should normally be located in the same directory as totalcmd.exe.
Which program needs wcmicons.dll?
Total Commander uses it for icons and related interface resources. Another program may report the error only if its shortcut or configuration points to a Total Commander installation.
Can I download wcmicons.dll by itself?
Avoid that. Restore the file by reinstalling or updating Total Commander from Ghisler’s official installer.
Should I register wcmicons.dll?
No. regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command, and an icon/resource library normally does not require COM registration.
What if Total Commander starts but some icons are missing?
Check the button-bar or command configuration for an old icon-library path. The issue may be a stale configuration rather than a missing core file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do I need to repair Windows?
Usually not. Repair Total Commander first. Use DISM and SFC only when other Windows components are also malfunctioning.
What does “not designed to run on Windows” mean?
It can indicate a corrupted, incompatible, or replaced file. It does not prove that a Microsoft runtime is missing. Reinstall the matching official Total Commander package and scan for malware if the message persists.
