GameSpot reviewer Mark Walton scored the game 8/10, describing it as “Great.” His review makes the critical case more concrete: FIFA 14 felt fresh to returning players without abandoning the familiar series formula. GameSpot’s FIFA 14 page lists the game and its review information.

A more considered pace
Walton praised a slower, more deliberate rhythm that rewarded planning attacks instead of relying on constant forward momentum. The appeal was not simply that play moved more slowly; the altered feel encouraged players to build possessions and choose when to advance.
#1 Best Overall
- Fuelled by EA SPORTS IGNITE, FIFA 14 will feel alive with players who think, move, and behave like world-class footballers, and dynamic stadiums that come to life. Players have four times the decision making ability and feel alive with human-like reactions, anticipation, and instincts. With 10 times more animation depth and detail than previous consoles, FIFA 14 delivers the dynamic movements and biomechanics of the worlds best footballers. Players are agile and athletic as they plant, pivot and
Improved teammate AI and attacking choices
The review also highlighted better teammate AI, which gave players more useful options when building an attack. Walton called out player scouting as another welcome feature, alongside menus that were better organized.
Animation and presentation
Smooth animations helped the action feel cohesive. Taken together, those changes supported an iterative improvement to the football experience rather than a complete redesign. Walton summarized the balance this way: “But to do so would mean missing out on what is a fabulous football game, one that feels fresh yet familiar and that pushes even FIFA veterans into new, exciting, and engrossing ways of playing.”
Rank #2
- Pure Shot - Shooting has been transformed. Players have the intelligence to adjust their stride and approach angle to find the best position for hitting the back of the net. Well-hit balls feel satisfying and goals are rewarding. As well as quality strikes, players can now shoot while off balance or rushed.
- Real Ball Physics - Strike the ball with more force and finesse. Realistic ball physics now determines the trajectories of balls in game, enabling players to strike the ball with force from distance, drill low rising shots with accuracy, and blast dipping or swerving shots, just like real soccer players.
- Protect The Ball - Dominate midfield and dictate the tempo of a match. Fend-off and block defenders from the ball while dribbling at any speed. Protect the ball from opponents to control play through midfield and dictate the pace of the match. Plus, out-muscle opponents for position before receiving the ball, then turn defenders to carve out opportunities.
- Teammate Intelligence - Better decision-making delivers tighter, smarter marking and improved run tracking. Defenders recognize opportunities to provide support and win back possession. Attacking players have new ways to outsmart their opponents and break down tighter, more intelligent defenses by creating space for themselves, running along the backline and checking their pace.
- Sprint Dribble Turns - Utilize quick, explosive cuts and turns to beat defenders one-on-one while sprinting with the ball. Players can move in any direction, preserving their natural momentum and maintaining possession of the ball.
What were the main criticisms?
GameSpot’s review identified two clear drawbacks. The visuals still looked overly clean to Walton, and the single-player modes were beginning to feel dated. Those criticisms qualify the positive verdict: the underlying play was the strongest part of the package, while presentation and mode freshness were less convincing.
Which FIFA 14 version are the reviews about?
FIFA 14 was released on multiple generations and devices, including PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PSP, PlayStation Vita, Wii, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, as well as handheld and mobile platforms, according to GameSpot’s listing. A review of one version should not automatically be treated as a technical assessment of every port; the available review evidence does not establish measured differences among all releases.

Release listings also differ by one day. Metacritic gives September 24, 2013 as the initial release date, while GameSpot lists September 23, 2013 as the first release date. EA’s 2013 announcement said Xbox 360, PS3, Windows PC, Wii, 3DS, Vita, PS2, and PSP versions would launch in North America on September 24 and worldwide on September 27, with Xbox One and PS4 versions announced separately for later that year. The date variation reflects differing catalog or launch conventions, so identify the platform and region when precision matters.

The historical reviews make a strong case for FIFA 14 if you want the particular style Walton praised: measured attacks, more useful teammate movement, and familiar FIFA gameplay refined rather than rebuilt. They are less persuasive if your priority is fresh single-player modes or a visual presentation that does not feel dated. The cited reviews are from the game’s original release period, not a current test of its performance or availability.

What did EA say about FIFA 14’s reception?
In 2013, Electronic Arts said more than 5 million fans had played the FIFA 14 demo. EA also reported that 32 review scores were 9/10 or higher, including five perfect scores. These are publisher-reported promotional figures, not independently audited counts. EA’s announcement about the demo is the source for its claim.
