Which game fits your group?
Pick Fighting Golf for a larger group
Its clearest advantage is four-player support in Stroke Play and Nassau Game. Four people can take turns using two controllers, though the manual’s arrangement means players 1 and 3 share one controller and players 2 and 4 share the other. Practice is single-player, so it is not a group mode.
Pick Open Tournament Golf for one or two players
Nintendo lists the game for one or two alternating players. Its two-player option also brings Luigi into the game alongside Mario. If you mainly want a head-to-head game with one other person, its documented Match Play mode may be the deciding option.

Fighting Golf: Nassau and practice shots
Alongside Stroke Play, Fighting Golf offers Nassau Game, a points competition, and a solo Practice mode focused on shots. Its two 18-hole courses are American and Japanese. The manual also describes a hole picture and strategy advice before play, giving the player information to consider before taking a shot.

Its shot sequence includes selecting a club and adjusting for wind on an overhead map, then using a timing-based action screen. Nintendo Life also reports a save mode and distance and closest-to-the-pin contests.
How to make the choice
- Four people playing together: Fighting Golf is the documented choice for up to four players in its Stroke Play and Nassau modes.
- Nassau scoring or solo shot practice: Choose Fighting Golf for those specific modes.
- Match Play or Tournament mode: Choose Open Tournament Golf.
- More course regions: Open Tournament Golf names UK, US, and Japan; Fighting Golf has American and Japanese courses.
- Different golfer strengths: Fighting Golf lets you select from four golfers with differing distance and accuracy strengths. Choose Open Tournament Golf if playing as Mario—and Luigi in two-player mode—is the appeal.

Availability and collecting
Nintendo’s UK page lists the original NES release and historical Virtual Console editions of Open Tournament Golf. It also states that purchases on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family eShops ended on 27 March 2023. Those legacy listings do not establish current digital availability in every region. Nintendo Life’s profile lists the game through Nintendo Switch Online, but catalog availability can vary by region and change over time; check the live service catalog where you live. The most direct physical options are the NES cartridges. Before buying, check the cartridge’s regional version, its condition, and whether the listing includes only the cart or also the box and manual. Current stock and prices are not established here.
