Arcade Archives is HAMSTER Corporation’s series of classic arcade games re-released for modern platforms. The key difference from a console port is the game’s source: an Arcade Archives release represents an arcade game, while a console port is a version adapted for home-console hardware. That distinction describes where the game came from, not whether one version is technically superior or identical to another.

What are Arcade Archives games?

Arcade Archives, also called the ACA series, brings classic arcade games to modern platforms. HAMSTER describes the releases as reproducing arcade games “staying true to its original.” That is the company’s description; it does not establish that every release is bit-perfect or identical to the original arcade hardware.

The series has grown over time: HAMSTER reported that Arcade Archives and ACA NEOGEO reached 400 available titles in January 2024, then announced a milestone of 500 distributed titles in December 2025. Those are dated company-reported milestones, not a current catalog count. See HAMSTER’s series and release announcements.

How do Arcade Archives releases differ from console ports?

A console port is a version adapted for a home-console platform. The term describes a platform relationship; it does not necessarily tell you where the game originated. A game may have started in arcades and later received a console port. Arcade Archives, by contrast, identifies a modern release of the arcade version.

Term What it refers to What to check for an individual game
Arcade Archives A HAMSTER release of a classic arcade game for a modern platform. Which title and release you are buying, its platform availability, and its supported options.
Console port A version adapted for home-console hardware; the original game may have come from an arcade or elsewhere. Which specific version and platform the port represents. Do not assume its content or behavior matches another release.
Console Archives HAMSTER’s separate series for classic games originally released on home consoles. Its title-specific features; do not confuse them with general Arcade Archives features.

So, “arcade version” and “console port” are not necessarily mutually exclusive descriptions of a game’s history. A title can have an arcade original, a console port, and a later Arcade Archives release. Compare the actual versions rather than relying on the label alone.

What features can an Arcade Archives release add?

HAMSTER lists adjustable settings and online high-score rankings among Arcade Archives features. CRT-style display options are available for some titles, rather than being a guaranteed feature of every release. Options and modes vary by game, so check the specific store listing before buying.

Related labels should not be treated as interchangeable feature guarantees. HAMSTER’s ACA2NEOGEO announcement describes additions including Time Attack and Network Mode, while warning that not every ACA NEOGEO title has every additional feature. HAMSTER’s ACA NEOGEO announcement also notes that store availability can differ by country or region.

Console Archives is a different series, for classic games originally released on home consoles. HAMSTER lists customizable button layouts, rapid-fire settings, multiple save points, rewind, screen-layout adjustments, and filters for that series. Those are Console Archives features, not features to assume for Arcade Archives. See the Console Archives series description.

Are Arcade Archives games available on every modern console?

No single platform list applies to the whole catalog: availability depends on the title, release, store, and region. For example, in its March 26, 2026 announcement, HAMSTER listed Arcade Archives FINAL LAP for Nintendo Switch and PS4, and Arcade Archives 2 FINAL LAP for Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. HAMSTER identifies FINAL LAP as a 1987 Namco arcade racing game and gave U.S. announcement prices of $7.99 for the Arcade Archives release and $9.99 for Arcade Archives 2; those prices are dated announcement details, not guarantees of current price or availability. The announcement includes a country- and region-availability caveat. Check the store listing for your platform and region: HAMSTER’s FINAL LAP release announcement.

What should you compare before choosing a release?

If a game has several modern versions, use these checks instead of assuming that “Arcade Archives” or “port” settles the comparison:

  • 🎵Headphone Jack: 3.5 mm headphone jack lets you enjoy Pac-Man on the go on your own privately.
  • Source version: Is the release based on the arcade original or a particular home-console version?
  • Platform and region: Is that exact edition listed for your hardware and available in your country or region?
  • Modes and players: Which modes and player options does the individual listing specify?
  • Controls and display: Are the settings you want—such as button adjustments or display options—present for this title?
  • Release label: Is it the original ACA release, ACA2NEOGEO, or an Arcade Archives 2 edition? Do not assume newer or related labels share identical features.

HAMSTER’s series descriptions establish the arcade-origin versus home-console-origin distinction, but do not document the technical emulation method, exact hardware accuracy, or every title’s differences from historical console ports. A claim that one version is categorically better therefore needs title-specific evidence.
