You can play chess, checkers, Go, backgammon and solitaire on your phone in a browser, without installing an app. For a modern tabletop game, CATAN’s publisher points players to browser play on Board Game Arena. The best fit depends on whether you want a solo match, a game with friends, or a named board-game experience—and whether the site asks you to create an account.

Its catalog also includes chess, backgammon and Go for players looking for more strategic depth.
For a solo card game
PlayTable lists solitaire alongside classic card games such as Durak, Brisca, Tute, Escoba, Mus and Chinchón. Its site says you can play against AI without an account. The games listed may reflect different regional traditions, so check the game description if you are unfamiliar with a title.

For a recognizable modern board game
CATAN GmbH’s Digital CATAN Games page says: “Play CATAN online directly in your web browser (including the Cities & Knights expansion and the CATAN – New Energies stand-alone).” That points to browser play through Board Game Arena. CATAN Universe is a separate digital offering described by the publisher for smartphones, tablets, PC and Mac; do not assume it is the same no-download browser route.
How to choose between solo and multiplayer
- Want to play alone? Look for a computer or AI opponent. vygam describes computer opponents, and PlayTable says its AI games can be played without an account.
- Want to play with friends? Check whether the specific game supports online rooms or invitations. PlayTable says online play is available after signing in; conditions on other platforms can differ.
- Want to avoid registration? vygam says no sign-up is needed for its browser games. PlayTable distinguishes account-free AI play from signed-in online play.
- Want a broad catalog? Board Game Arena lists many tabletop games, including chess, card and strategy titles. A catalog listing does not establish that every game has the same phone experience or access rules, so check the selected game’s page.
What “without downloading” means on a phone
These options are played through a web browser rather than requiring you to install a game app. You still need an internet connection and a browser that can load the site. A platform’s mobile-support claim is not a guarantee that every game will feel equally comfortable on every phone; the listed sites describe their experiences as mobile-friendly or phone-first, but have not been independently tested here.
