Figment earned a generally positive critical reception, with its storybook art, musical design and surreal take on difficult themes drawing the most consistent praise. The main reservations concern uneven puzzles, combat and pacing. In short: critics found a distinctive, music-led adventure whose presentation is more reliable than its moment-to-moment mechanics.
What do critics think of Figment?
Critics generally liked Figment, but the reception is not a unanimous endorsement of every part of its design. The strongest consensus is around the game’s hand-painted look, music woven into the action and unusual setting inside a mind. Puzzle quality and combat received more mixed reactions.

On Metacritic’s Nintendo Switch critic-review page, Figment has a 75/100 Metascore based on 13 reviews: eight positive, five mixed and none negative. That is a score for the Switch review sample shown on that page, not a platform-neutral rating. Metacritic’s Figment critic reviews.
Epic Games Store displays a separate 79 “Top Critic Average,” marked “Strong,” and says 69% of critics recommend the game. Epic identifies the ratings as provided by OpenCritic. What reviewers praise
Hand-painted art and surreal presentation
The storybook art is one of the clearest strengths in the critic excerpts. God is a Geek’s Gary Bailey, reviewing the Switch version on June 27, 2018, wrote: “It looks gorgeous on the Switch, both in handheld and when docked, and all of the gorgeous artwork stuns with every scene.” Steam describes the environments as traditionally hand-painted, moving between colorful and ominous areas. Metacritic’s review excerpts and Steam’s Figment page.
Music that belongs to the world
Music is not just background decoration: Steam describes singing enemies and a dynamic soundtrack shaped by player actions, while critic excerpts highlight the soundtrack and musical boss battles. COGconnected’s Switch review, dated July 3, 2018, praised the “sweeping soundtrack” alongside the game’s art, puzzles and story. Steam and Metacritic.

Weighty themes with a lighter touch
Reviewers also noted the contrast between the game’s colorful, storybook presentation and its subject matter. GameSpot’s Leif Johnson, reviewing the PC version on September 28, 2017, called it “a delightful isometric puzzler that skillfully uses storybook imagery to tackle weighty themes associated with trauma and depression.” TheSixthAxis excerpt reproduced by Epic highlights loss and despair handled in an optimistic, uplifting way. These are critical descriptions of the story’s approach, not clinical claims about mental health. GameSpot’s Figment reviews and Epic Games Store.
Where reviews are more mixed
Puzzles
Puzzles are part of the game’s appeal, but reviewers did not agree that they consistently land. Some found them enjoyable; others treated them as less compelling than the art, music and overall concept. It is safer to call the puzzle design a mixed element than a universal strength. Metacritic’s Switch review excerpts.

Combat and pacing
Critics also found the combat less memorable than the enemies and presentation, and at least one review described the adventure as uneven. That points to a gap between the game’s distinctive atmosphere and the consistency of its action; it does not mean every player will find the combat or pacing frustrating. Figment is a single-player musical action-adventure from Bedtime Digital Games, starring Dusty and Piper on a journey through the mind. Steam lists the game’s release date as September 22, 2017. Epic’s Windows storefront lists March 27, 2020; that is the date shown for Epic’s listing, not a replacement for the original Steam release date. Steam and Epic Games Store.

- Choose from 2 playable characters, each with their own storylines, missions and unlockable skins
- 3rd-person action and stealth as you steal identities and take on the appearance, voice and behaviors of your enemy

The numbers describe different things and should be kept in their own context:
- 75/100: Metacritic’s Nintendo Switch critic-review score from a 13-review set, with eight positive and five mixed reviews.
- 79 and 69%: Epic’s displayed OpenCritic Top Critic Average and Critics Recommend figure, respectively.
- 88% positive: Steam’s user-review snapshot, retrieved October 8, 2026, based on 1,347 user reviews. This is a changing player-review figure, not a critic score. Steam.
GameSpot’s cited review is for PC, whereas the Metacritic page cited here is filtered to Nintendo Switch. A score comparison therefore needs to account for both the aggregator and the platform/version reviewed; Steam’s user-review percentage measures a different group from critic aggregates.

Is Figment worth playing?
If you are drawn to surreal worlds, expressive art, musical encounters and a story that approaches heavy themes through a lighter presentation, the critical reception suggests Figment is worth considering. If consistently strong puzzles or combat are your priority, reviews offer less assurance: those elements are among the game’s more divisive parts. Its best-reviewed qualities are its identity and presentation, rather than uniformly polished mechanics.
