1. Verify Dying Light’s files
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
This is the most likely fix after an interrupted update, damaged download, disk error, or accidental deletion.
Steam
- Close Dying Light.
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click Dying Light and select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish.
- Start the game again from Steam.
Steam replaces files that are missing or different from its installation data. If it reports that files were reacquired, restart Steam before launching the game.

Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find Dying Light.
- Click the three-dot menu beside the game.
- Select Manage.
- Click Verify.
- Launch the game after verification completes.
The exact wording can vary between launcher versions. Use the game’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent installation-check command rather than downloading an individual DLL.
Disc or standalone installation
Use the original installer or the launcher supplied with your legitimate copy. If it has a Repair option, run that first. If it does not, uninstall the game through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows, and reinstall from the original installation media.
Back up local saves before uninstalling. Do not delete save folders unless the game’s support instructions specifically require it.
If verification completes but the same error returns, continue with the next fix instead of copying a replacement DLL into a Windows folder.

Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software may remove or quarantine a game file after an update or after the executable changes.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a recent detection involving Dying Light or
filesystem_x64_rwdi.dll. - Expand the detection to inspect its location and action.
- Restore the file only if it came from your intact, legitimate game installation and the detection is clearly a false positive.
- Run the launcher’s file verification again.
Do not disable antivirus protection broadly. If the game came from an unofficial repack, an unknown installer, or a modified download, do not restore the file. Remove that installation and reinstall Dying Light from the legitimate store or original media.
If the file is repeatedly quarantined after verification, record the detection name and submit the file or detection to your security vendor for review. Repeated removal can indicate a modified or damaged installation rather than a simple missing-file problem.

3. Reinstall Dying Light completely
Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours, depending on the download

Use this step when verification cannot restore the file, the installation repeatedly loses files, or the error says the DLL is “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error.”
- Back up your saves and any custom configuration.
- Open the launcher that owns the game.
- Uninstall Dying Light from the launcher or from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall Dying Light from the same legitimate store or original disc.
- Install it to an internal drive with adequate free space.
- Run the launcher’s verification command once after installation.
- Start the game without copying files from the old installation.
A complete reinstall replaces a truncated, wrong, or corrupted filesystem_x64_rwdi.dll together with its related game files. It is more reliable than replacing one DLL while leaving a damaged installation in place.
4. Install Visual C++ only when the error names it
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
filesystem_x64_rwdi.dll is not supplied by Microsoft Visual C++. Installing Visual C++ will not directly recreate this game DLL.
Check the error carefully. A Visual C++ repair may be relevant if it also names files such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll, or reports a side-by-side or runtime failure.
- Open Microsoft’s official Latest Supported Visual C++ Redistributable page.
- Download the current x64 package for a 64-bit game.
- Install it and restart Windows.
- If the game or launcher includes 32-bit components, install the x86 package as well.
- Launch Dying Light again.
Older games can require separate legacy Visual C++ packages. Install those only when the game’s official support instructions or the exact error identifies that requirement. Do not download individual runtime DLLs from file-collection sites.
5. Do not copy the file to System32 or SysWOW64
Time needed: 2 minutes
Do not manually place filesystem_x64_rwdi.dll in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A different game directory
The _x64 name indicates a 64-bit build, but it does not mean that the file belongs in a Windows loader directory. System32 is the normal Windows system location for 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 serves 32-bit compatibility components on 64-bit Windows. Neither directory is the normal home for this Dying Light library.
The game normally loads its private DLLs from its own installation directory. A copied file can be the wrong build, the wrong architecture, or infected, and it may still fail because another dependency is missing.
6. Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is intended for COM or OLE DLLs that provide registry-registration entry points. A game filesystem library normally loads privately with the game and does not need registration.

If you already ran it, errors such as “entry point DllRegisterServer was not found” or “module failed to load” do not prove that the game installation is beyond repair. Return to launcher verification or reinstall the game.
7. Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is failing
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They generally do not recreate a missing Techland game DLL, so use them when several unrelated applications fail or Windows shows broader corruption.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Verify Dying Light’s files again.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that corruption was repaired, or that no integrity violations were found. If either command reports an error, note the exact message and repair the game separately. Windows Features, including optional .NET components, are not a normal source for this DLL; enable them only when another application specifically requires them.
Repeatedly hunting through Windows components and rerunning SFC or DISM can be time-consuming when the real problem is a damaged game installation. 8. Update or reinstall graphics drivers only for driver-related launch failures
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
A graphics driver normally does not provide filesystem_x64_rwdi.dll. Driver work is appropriate when Dying Light began failing immediately after a driver change, or when the game reports graphics initialization errors in addition to the DLL message.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
For a clean reinstall, download the driver from the graphics hardware manufacturer, choose its clean-install option if offered, and restart. Then verify Dying Light’s files again.

9. Use System Restore only after a recent system change

- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Complete the restore and restart Windows.
- Verify Dying Light’s files afterward.
System Restore does not guarantee that a game DLL will return. Do not use it instead of reinstalling a damaged game.
What the error message means
“The code execution cannot proceed because filesystem_x64_rwdi.dll was not found”
Windows could not locate the DLL where the Dying Light executable expected it. The usual causes are deletion, quarantine, an incomplete update, or an incomplete installation.
“The specified module could not be found”
The named DLL may be present, but one of its dependencies may be missing. Verify the entire game installation rather than replacing only the visible file.
“The file is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error”
The file may be truncated, corrupted, blocked, or the wrong build. This message does not necessarily mean Windows itself is unsupported. Reinstalling the game is safer than trying random DLL versions.

If the error persists
Collect these details before contacting Techland or the store platform:
- The exact wording of the error
- Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Dying Light edition
- Steam, Epic, disc, or another launcher
- The complete installation path
- Whether the file exists in the game directory
- Antivirus detection name and quarantine history
- Whether other files ending in
_rwdi.dllare missing - The launcher’s verification result
- Any recent update, driver change, disk error, or reinstall
If several *_x64_rwdi.dll files disappeared together, suspect quarantine or an incomplete update. If the DLL exists but the error continues, a dependency or another damaged game file is more likely than a missing copy of this file.
