Final Fantasy XVI is at its best when Clive Rosfield is cutting through a battle, chaining Eikon powers into fluid combos or facing a colossal summoned foe. Its story has the opposite effect: political intrigue and personal stakes give way to uneven character development and stretches of exposition that make the journey feel far less compelling than its combat. The result is an action game worth considering for its fights, but a difficult recommendation if you need its narrative to carry the experience.
What is Final Fantasy XVI?
Final Fantasy XVI is a standalone action RPG from Square Enix, set in the fantasy realm of Valisthea. You follow Clive Rosfield through a conflict shaped by the Mothercrystals, the spreading Blight and the Eikons: powerful summoned beings that their Dominants can call upon and wield. It tells its own story, so you do not need to know earlier numbered Final Fantasy games to understand it. Square Enix announced the PS5 launch for June 22, 2023. Square Enix’s announcement

Why the action works
Combat is real-time rather than turn-based. Clive acquires abilities associated with the Eikons he encounters and combines them into attack sequences, giving fights a flexible, combo-driven rhythm. The large Eikon encounters also change the scale and feel of combat, with distinct settings, movement and gameplay rather than simply repeating ordinary fights at a larger size.
Combat designer Ryota Suzuki described the system as drawing inspiration from Final Fantasy V’s ability system: “Clive learns abilities from the Eikons he encounters on his journey, and can combine them in countless unique ways to create a powerful arsenal of techniques.” That description appeared in a February 2023 PlayStation Blog hands-on, before the game launched; it is useful context for the design, not a post-launch assessment. The appeal is the immediacy: learn a move, fit it into a sequence, and keep pressure on an opponent. Axios’s May 2023 preview likewise described the combat as combo-driven and compared its feel with Devil May Cry. That was a journalist’s impression from a two-hour pre-release session, not a developer claim or a verdict on every part of the final game. Axios preview
Why the story lets the game down
The premise has ingredients for a strong political fantasy: Clive is caught in a struggle across Valisthea, the Mothercrystals and Blight threaten the realm, and the Eikons make personal power inseparable from political power. The problem is the way those ingredients are developed. The early political tensions promise a story of competing interests and consequential choices, but the plot increasingly relies on broad stakes and explanations rather than on relationships that deepen or conflicts that become more revealing.
Big stakes, thin character momentum
Clive’s journey gives the game a clear center, yet many surrounding characters do not gain enough emotional or dramatic momentum to make the wider conflict feel lived-in. Important turns can feel driven by the needs of the next plot beat instead of by a convincing evolution in the characters’ relationships or motives. The Eikons and their Dominants are potent dramatic material; the story does not always make their personal costs as affecting as their spectacle suggests.

Pacing between the set pieces
The game’s action delivers sharp peaks, but the connective stretches often slow the narrative with exposition and errands that do little to build tension. That gap matters: the biggest fights can be visually and mechanically impressive while the story around them feels less urgent than the scale of the threat demands. A darker, more profane tone—one Axios compared with Game of Thrones in its preview—sets expectations for political complexity, but tone alone cannot supply it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAn ending that has to carry too much
The final movement asks the conclusion to pay off the game’s large-scale stakes and Clive’s personal story at once. Because the narrative’s character work and pacing have been inconsistent, the resolution has less accumulated emotional force than its ambitions require. The story is not short on dramatic events; it is short on the steady development that would make those events land with equal weight.
Accessibility options and combat assistance
A pre-release PlayStation Blog hands-on described accessories that can ease selected combat actions: slowing time for dodges, automating Torgal’s actions, using potions when health is low, or triggering dodges. The preview also described “action-focused” and “story-focused” options as different starting accessory sets, not as proof of different enemy strength. Because that article covered a build still in development, check the game’s current settings and accessory descriptions for exact behavior before relying on a specific option. These assists can make the action more approachable without removing its core appeal: Clive’s abilities and the spectacle of Eikon battles remain central. They are worth considering if you like the premise and presentation but do not want every fight to demand the same degree of timing or input management.

Square Enix announced Final Fantasy XVI for PS5 in 2023 and announced its PC release for Steam and the Epic Games Store in September 2024. The PC announcement distinguishes a Standard Edition with the base game from a Complete Edition that includes both DLC chapters, “Echoes of the Fallen” and “The Rising Tide.” Square Enix said the chapters could also be purchased individually or together through an Expansion Pass.
