Type B is a sensible first layout to try if you prefer melee on R1, magic on R2, and evade on Circle. It is not an objectively proven best choice: some players may prefer Type A, particularly for combos that combine magic and melee. Try both, then keep the arrangement that feels most natural.
Why try Type B first?
Type B puts melee attacks on R1, magic on R2, and evade on Circle. In Prima Games’ June 23, 2023 guide, author Daniel Wenerowicz favors this arrangement because the evade feels smoother to him and the controls feel closer to those in other action games. That is a personal preference, not evidence that Type B is faster or better for every player.
If you already expect an action game to put attacks on the shoulder buttons, Type B may feel familiar. Use the in-game prompts to confirm controls as you play.
When might Type A feel better?
Type A may suit players who prefer its attack and evade placement, or who find it easier for particular combos. The Prima Games guide specifically notes jump combos that combine magic and melee as a reason some players might prefer Type A. If those sequences feel awkward with Type B, switch and compare rather than forcing yourself to adapt.

How to change the controller layout
- Open System.
- Select Controller Layout.
- Choose a preset, or select Custom to change button assignments.
Square Enix Support documents the path as “System > Controller Layout > Custom.” It also warns that “certain inputs cannot be changed and will be hidden from the options.” A missing input therefore may not be remappable.
What about layouts D, E, and F?
Square Enix’s July 6, 2023 update added three presets: D, E, and F. The official update notes establish that these layouts are available, but do not provide their full button mappings. Check the layouts and current prompts in your game rather than assuming what each preset changes.

Controller considerations by platform
PC
Square Enix lists Xbox, DualShock, DualSense, and Steam Input controllers as partially supported for the PC version. Some parts of the game may require a keyboard and mouse for navigation. The official PC update history says Bluetooth connectivity for DualSense and DUALSHOCK controllers was enabled in PC version 1.01; that update note does not mean every controller has identical features or behavior.
PS5
The PlayStation Store listing identifies basic controller remapping, adjustable stick sensitivity and inversion, and the option to play without vibration or adaptive trigger effects. These are useful comfort options, but they do not establish that the PS5 custom-mapping interface is identical to the one Square Enix documents for controller layouts.

A quick way to choose
- Start with Type B if R1 melee, R2 magic, and Circle evade sound comfortable or familiar.
- Try Type A if its placement feels more natural or you want to compare how it handles magic-and-melee combos.
- Use Custom if neither preset fits, keeping in mind that some inputs cannot be reassigned.
Change one thing at a time and test it in combat. The better layout is the one that lets you evade and execute your usual attacks without stopping to think about button placement.
