Fast combat and a cast worth experimenting with
The main appeal is real-time combat built around Class Zero, a group of fourteen students. Players can switch between characters with distinct weapons and abilities, and reviews highlight customization and character progression as reasons to try different members of the cast. The mission structure also gives players reason to bring more than one character into regular use. Personal stories within a darker war setting
The premise follows Class Zero after a neighboring empire attacks their country. Square Enix presents the spinoff as darker and grittier than much of the series. A slow start and demanding difficulty
Getting comfortable may take time. Push Square’s 2015 review describes a slow opening and says the game takes several hours to settle into an enjoyable rhythm. GameSpot warns that Normal difficulty can be very hard and may require grinding; Easy offers a less demanding route for players more interested in the story. Neither review presents the challenge as a universal problem: it depends on how much friction you want from progression and combat.

A story that does not always explain itself
The military conflict and individual character stories can hold interest, but the broader plot introduces concepts and lore terminology that reviewers found under-explained or cumbersome. If you want every major story thread clearly spelled out, expect to do some interpretive work rather than rely on the game to explain everything as it goes.
An uneven HD update
Reviews are mixed on the visual upgrade. GameSpot praises detailed backgrounds and the treatment of main characters, but notes that many secondary characters received less attention. Who should play it?
- Good fit: Players who enjoy active, challenging combat, experimenting with a broad roster, and progression that rewards using multiple characters.
- Possible mismatch: Players who want a clearly explained central plot, a quick onboarding period, or a consistently polished visual remaster.
- For a more story-focused run: Easy difficulty is an option if Normal’s challenge and possible grinding are getting in the way.

ESRB rates the game M for Mature 17+ for Blood, Drug Reference, Suggestive Themes, and Violence. Its detailed summary describes bloody combat and corpses, sexualized character presentation, a spy-camera sequence involving a bikini-clad character, and an event in which a character drugs the player character and implied sexual acts may follow.
