Buying an Xbox game on disc does not automatically give you a separate digital copy or a free upgrade for a newer console. The game must support the upgrade route you want, and a disc-based license may still require a console with a disc drive. Xbox has also announced a separate, limited disc-to-digital entitlement test for supported games; it is not a universal conversion.
Why your disc may not qualify
Eligibility depends on the specific game, edition and upgrade path. Xbox Smart Delivery can provide the version suited to your console at no extra cost, but only for participating games. Xbox says developers and publishers decide whether to implement Smart Delivery for physical discs; owning a disc alone does not establish that the game supports it. Xbox’s Smart Delivery announcement explains the feature and its developer-dependent support.
A publisher may offer a different upgrade policy, with its own conditions. Check whether the exact disc edition is included rather than assuming that an upgrade available for another edition or game also applies to yours.
How the available routes differ
| Route | What it may provide | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Smart Delivery | The best supported version for your Xbox console at no extra cost. | The game must support Smart Delivery, and physical-disc support depends on developer or publisher implementation. |
| Publisher upgrade | An upgrade under the publisher’s stated terms; cost and eligibility depend on the title. | Confirm the specific game, edition and disc are covered in the publisher’s policy or Xbox Store listing. |
| Xbox disc-to-digital entitlement test | A digital entitlement for supported discs; Xbox says benefits may include Xbox Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud Gaming where the game supports them. | Access to the Xbox Insider test and support for the exact disc are required. The feature does not make every title digital or grant every game PC or cloud access. |
| Separate digital purchase | A digital license for the game, if offered for sale. | This is a separate purchase, not an entitlement included automatically with the disc. |
Disc drive requirements still matter
A disc-based license can require you to insert the disc to download or play an upgraded version. Xbox’s Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time Store listing gives a title-specific example: an Xbox One disc owner needs an Xbox Series X to download or play the optimized version. The listing says an Xbox Series S owner cannot get that no-cost disc upgrade because Series S has no disc drive. This is an example for that game, not a blanket rule for every upgrade.

What Xbox’s disc-to-digital test changes—and what it doesn’t
Xbox announced on August 26, 2026 that Insiders could begin testing a separate feature on August 31. To claim a digital entitlement for a supported disc, the announcement says to insert it into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X and launch the game. Xbox said the initial catalog included thousands of titles and that more would be added, while also warning that not every title would be available at launch. Read Xbox’s announcement for the test.
The announcement does not provide a complete eligible-title list, and the test does not mean every disc converts into a digital license. Xbox’s statement that “Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature” appears alongside its qualification that the launch catalog covers thousands of titles and excludes some games. It is not a title-by-title eligibility guarantee.

How to check your specific game
- Identify the exact release. Note the full game title, edition and whether your copy is an Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc.
- Open the Xbox Store listing for that release. Look for Smart Delivery or explicit language describing a free upgrade, and read the console and disc conditions.
- Check the publisher’s upgrade policy. Confirm that it covers your disc edition; support can vary by developer or publisher.
- If you want to claim a disc-to-digital entitlement, confirm that you can access the Xbox Insider test and that your particular disc is supported. Xbox’s announcement does not include a complete eligible-title list.
- Check your console’s disc drive. If the upgrade relies on the disc license, you need hardware that can read the disc. A disc-free Series S cannot present a physical copy.
What you need to establish before expecting an upgrade
- Whether your exact game and edition support Smart Delivery or another upgrade policy.
- Whether physical-disc owners are included in that policy.
- Whether the upgrade is free or requires a separate purchase.
- Whether your console can read the disc when the game requires it.
- Whether any digital benefits, such as Play Anywhere or cloud gaming, are supported by that specific game.
