Final Fantasy VII on Nintendo Switch is a port of the original 1997 RPG, not Final Fantasy VII Remake. Nintendo’s digital edition adds 3x speed mode, an option to turn battle encounters off, and battle enhancement mode. Those features make the original adventure more flexible to play, but the official listing does not establish how the port looks, sounds, or feels in practice—so this is a guide to what the Switch version offers, not a hands-on verdict on its quality.
Is the Switch version the original or the remake?
It is the original FINAL FANTASY VII. Nintendo describes the Switch release as a port of the original game; it is not FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE or a chapter in the remake trilogy. The Switch edition launched on March 26, 2019, and Nintendo lists SQUARE ENIX as both its publisher and developer. Nintendo’s Canada store listing

The story centers on Cloud Strife, a former SOLDIER member who works as a mercenary and joins AVALANCHE, an eco-resistance group fighting Shinra. Shinra extracts mako, a resource drawn from the planet’s life force. The group’s conflict escalates when it learns that Sephiroth has returned. Square Enix’s official story and character page also describes Tifa as an AVALANCHE member and Cloud’s childhood friend, Aerith as a flower seller in Midgar’s slums, and Barret as AVALANCHE’s leader.

What extra features does the Switch port include?
Nintendo lists three additions: 3x speed mode, the ability to turn battle encounters off, and battle enhancement mode. The listing does not explain the exact effects of battle enhancement, so its mechanics should not be assumed from the name alone. These options are conveniences around the original game; Nintendo does not describe them as changes to the story or a remake of the adventure.

Speeding up play or disabling encounters can help players move through familiar stretches more quickly, but those choices can also change the original pacing. Whether that is an improvement depends on how you want to play; the store description confirms that the options exist, not how they affect the experience in practice.
Can you play it handheld, and what does the store listing specify?
Nintendo’s Canada listing says the game supports TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, for one player on one system. It lists Switch 2 compatibility and says game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch; that is a compatibility notice, not a performance assessment. The same regional page lists Japanese, French, German, Spanish, and American English, plus ESRB descriptors for blood, fantasy violence, language, and mild suggestive themes. Language availability and content ratings can vary by region, so check your local store listing.

Is it a good Switch port?
The official product and story information establishes what game this is, which convenience options it includes, and which play modes Nintendo lists. It does not establish the quality of the visuals, controls, sound, loading, or performance, or whether the game is comfortable to read and play in handheld mode. Those questions require hands-on play or attributable independent review evidence; the feature list alone is not enough to call the port technically strong or weak.

For someone who has already played the original, the clearest documented reason to revisit this edition is the ability to speed up play or switch off encounters. For a newcomer, the draw is the original Cloud-and-AVALANCHE story, with those same options available. Whether either is worth the current regional asking price depends on that price and your preference for the original game; Nintendo’s listing identifies this edition as digital, and a price is not included here.
