In two reported playthroughs, individual chapters took about 1.5 to 5 hours on a primarily story-focused route and 2.5 to 7 hours on a more leisurely route that included some optional content. These are observed playthrough times, not official chapter lengths or a promise of how long your run will take.
Chapter-by-chapter playtime
The estimates below come from Lardol’s March 9, 2024 report. Joshua Leeds primarily followed the main story; Matthew O’Dwyer played more leisurely and completed some, but not all, side content. Neither column represents a controlled timing test or a universal average.

Which chapters take the longest?
Chapter 7 stands out in the reported runs
Chapter 7 was the longest in both playthroughs in the chapter-by-chapter report: about 5 hours for the story-focused run and 7 hours for the leisurely one. PowerPyx also identifies Chapters 7, 9, and 13 as among the longest, and describes the game’s second half from Chapter 7 onward as longer. That is a guide’s assessment, rather than a measured rule for every player.
Optional play makes the biggest difference in some early chapters
The largest gaps between the two reported runs are in Chapters 2, 3, and 5: the leisurely playthrough took about 4, 3, and 3 hours longer, respectively. The contrast illustrates how exploration and side activities can change a chapter’s duration even when the story content is the same.

Chapter 14 includes a substantial final fight
The report’s roughly 2- and 3-hour figures for Chapter 14 are estimates from those two runs. Its guide cautions that the final chapter includes a lengthy boss fight, so the reported duration should not be treated as a fixed finish time.
What determines how long a chapter takes?
- Optional activities: Side quests, collectibles, minigames, and open-world objectives add time. GameSpot lists activities such as chocobo content, towers, lifestreams, excavation sites, summon sanctuaries, quests, and collectibles.
- Exploration and pace: The chapter estimates compare one primarily story-led route with one more leisurely route. They are individual observations, not controlled tests.
- Your completion goal: Moving through the main story, doing selected side content, and pursuing completionist or Platinum goals are different kinds of playthroughs; whole-game estimates vary accordingly.
How long is the full game?
For broad planning, GameSpot estimated about 50 hours for a mostly main-story run, about 65 hours for a balanced run with some optional content, and about 100 hours for completionists. Push Square’s January 2025 guide gives a similar range: about 50 hours for consecutive main chapters, 65 or more with side quests, and around 100 or more for Platinum. These are each outlet’s estimates, not official Square Enix durations; completion criteria differ, so the totals are best read as broad planning ranges.

Square Enix describes Rebirth as the second game in the three-part remake project, with the story reaching the Forgotten Capital. Its official page does not give chapter-by-chapter time estimates.
