This guide covers FINAL FANTASY II Pixel Remaster, Square Enix’s remaster of the original 1988 game. Its story follows four young people orphaned by the war between the Palamecian Empire and the rebel army. The official release keeps the original story while adjusting balance and updating the interface; it is not a new story or a blanket guide to features from every later rerelease.

One important limit: the official information available for this guide confirms the game’s progression concepts and platform options, but not a complete, verified sequence of locations, dungeon directions, chests, missables, or boss tactics. Rather than guess at a route, this page explains how to keep progressing reliably, what to pay attention to, and how to tell which version-specific options apply.

What kind of walkthrough does Pixel Remaster need?

FINAL FANTASY II differs from a conventional RPG in two ways that affect how you navigate the story: character attributes develop according to fighting style rather than through a standard character-level system, and conversations can teach keywords that matter later. The Steam listing describes both systems, but does not provide a verified action-by-action growth chart or a full story route. Square Enix’s Steam listing

Square Enix says the Pixel Remasters are based on the original Nintendo and Super Nintendo versions, retain their stories, and adjust balance and interface. Some features added in earlier remakes are not included, while the Pixel Remasters add features such as a gallery and sound player. Do not assume a PSP- or Origins-era guide describes this edition accurately. Square Enix’s Pixel Remaster FAQ

How to keep progressing when you are unsure where to go

Use conversations as part of the route

When a character teaches you a new keyword, record it. Try it in relevant conversations with people who might know about that subject, and revisit earlier contacts when a new term makes their dialogue relevant. The game’s official description confirms that keywords learned in conversation can be used to gather information and advance the story. It does not establish a complete list of keyword-to-character matches, so avoid treating any unverified list as definitive.

Recheck people and places after a story change

If the current objective is unclear, speak to people in the place where the latest major event occurred and to contacts connected to the newest keyword. Look for a new lead rather than assuming the next destination is always a dungeon or a map marker. This is a practical way to use the confirmed keyword system, not a substitute for a verified chapter-by-chapter route.

Keep your own route notes

  • Write down the latest story development and any new keyword.
  • Note the person or place that supplied important information.
  • Record doors, routes, or objectives you could not yet access so you can check them again when the story changes.
  • If you are following a community route, confirm that it explicitly covers Pixel Remaster rather than another release.

How character growth works

The official Steam description says attributes strengthen according to the way characters fight, rather than by conventional leveling. This makes the party’s actions relevant to development, but the cited official material does not specify which precise action raises each attribute or skill in Pixel Remaster. It would be misleading to present an exact training recipe without version-specific confirmation.

For a normal story playthrough, pay attention to the abilities and equipment you actually use, and consult a Pixel Remaster-specific reference before deliberately grinding for a particular stat or skill. A strategy copied from another edition may not account for the balance changes in this remaster.

Which settings and extras are available?

Platform matters: Square Enix’s FAQ documents a Steam and mobile update dated 31 January 2024, while its feature notes do not establish that every option is available on console. Check the settings in your own copy instead of relying on a universal menu path.

Platform or feature What the official information establishes
Steam and mobile Square Enix says the 31 January 2024 update added an encounter toggle and an EXP multiplier adjustable from 0 to 4. The Steam listing also describes disabling encounters, compensatory HP, and weapon-skill multipliers from 0 to 4. These are options, not evidence that every platform has identical controls. Mobile The FAQ says gamepad support was added alongside the Steam and mobile update. Square Enix FAQ
Bestiary and map The FAQ says the bestiary fills with monsters encountered and includes a world-map habitat chart. It is a reference for encounters you have made, not a replacement for a route guide. Square Enix FAQ
Gallery and sound player Square Enix says many Pixel Remaster editions have an illustration gallery and music player available from the start; availability can vary by platform. Square Enix FAQ

Because the controls and feature set can differ, look for the relevant option in the settings of your installed version rather than following a menu sequence written for another platform.

Are there missable items or optional content?

Steam Community guide titles show that players seek missable-content, optional-content, achievement, and collectibles guides. Those community categories establish the kinds of help readers look for, but they do not verify a particular missable, collectible list, or route. FINAL FANTASY II Steam Community hub

No specific permanent missables or complete collectible route are established by the official material cited here. If completion matters to you, use a detailed guide that identifies itself as covering Pixel Remaster and verify its claims against the edition you are playing. Do not assume a list for an earlier remake transfers unchanged.

Choosing a guide for your goal

  • Story completion: prioritize a route that tracks new information and keywords, and clearly labels the Pixel Remaster edition.
  • Achievements: use an achievement guide that specifies platform, since achievement availability and behavior can be platform-specific.
  • Missables or all collectibles: choose a route that explicitly lists the relevant items and explains when an opportunity becomes unavailable; community guide titles alone do not confirm those details.
